I'm not exactly sure what the huge fuss is about. It is very
easy to focus on the few negatives around this program compared
to the many positives, that's just human nature. It is however
very hard to talk about this year's team while ignoring the
elephant in the room that we could very easily finish 3-8 or
4-7. We just lost our top notch DC, and our offense has
struggled to put points on the board these past four seasons.
There's reason for concern. You can't just ignore these things
when you're trying to build a fanbase, and see the program
ascend to bigger, better things.
Athletics is a huge source of publicity for the school. It is in
the interest of us all that the athletic teams win as many games
as possible. Pointing this out doesn't mean we aren't fans of
the athletic programs. We're passionate about the direction the
program is heading because we care. If I didn't give a hoot
about how this program was doing, I wouldn't watch games,
wouldn't donate, and I certainly wouldn't be talking about the
program on a forum like this one. It's when nobody is saying
anything about your program that you have to sound the alarm
bells. There's nothing wrong with expecting more from your
coaches and programs.

Well said VA_Seawolf.... If people didnt care about the health
of the athletic program you wold be hearing crickets instead of
comments, either good or bad.. Like you, I am a long time season
ticket holder and donate a good amount of $$ to the program and
would love nothing more to see SB football win a national title
or just make the playoffs every year, like UNH does..
Crissy, who constantly bashes me for being outspoken, but thats
ok because that is his right to do so, is correct about not
giving some of the players accolades for their hard work off the
field and into the classrooms.. Coach P should definitely get
the credit for that, however I go to the games to watch them
play football out on the field, not in the classrooms so my love
is really for SB athletics not so much SB academics, even though
it should be academic first, athletics second.. I am a fan of
all sports and pay to watch them play and compete against other
college kids. That is why i attend games..Kudos to the athletes
that do extremely well in the classrooms and I hope they all
make a bundle of $$$ when they graduate from SB so they can give
back to the institution that gave them a free education or even
partially free education..

Read this.... Rutgers has an attendance problem like we do and
thats because they dont win games. Read what some players say
about that..

Lets try this circular discussion ONE MORE time. First, when did
I state it was a big fuss? Second, you stated no one calls out
the players and then I wrote one name "carbone" and then you
back pedal, and while I don't have time to simply go back and
count the negative over positive comments (which I am willing to
bet you are probably in the negative 10 to 1 range) I stated a
SIMPLE request, and then backed it up with facts from the "3
months to BB season" crowd!
You are a season ticket holder! Great. Our son is on full
scholarship so we are not. But then of course we donate to the
Athletics program, and the Up Lifting Athletes, and both my
wife's company and mine MATCH dollar for dollar. But it seems
that you are stating you give $$ so that somehow provides the
cover to "BB season is only three months away" crowd? Don't buy
it, and is still a classless way to enter into a discussion.
But, I am sure you know who Dexter Bailey is (because he
certainly knows my wife and I), so we'll just leave that one
alone, when it comes do giving $$ to the school.
Also, as a former D1 football player, our coach told us "you are
representing the University in all matters of the school, but
make no mistake about it. You are all here as STUDENT Athletes,
and when you walk on graduation, it won't be with your helmet,
pads and football cleats.
As to the article on Rutgers, yes I read it and while as a
former athlete who played in a stadium (back then) of packed
60,000 seats our stadium on Sat was the ONLY game in town and
unlike SBU we were nearly 2 hours away (by train) to see an NFL
game and was interesting that the article addressed the "pro fan
base" of the area. Maybe as some have suggested, they have too
many "asians" and as we all know they don't come to the games.
Finally the student athlete on scholarship today also takes home
a part of the gate, so no doubt there is some "marketing" going
on by the Rutgers players- but then again, maybe their fans if
seeing the program continue to struggle in the Big 10 surely
will be chanting.... "only 3 more months to BB season".

I am generally of the opinion that Coach P sooner or later is
going to be on his way out, and like others are somewhat
dismayed by the way our program is going. But, if you want to
know what is really pissing me off is this "well we have 3
months till BB season". WOW! First off I am guessing many of you
don't remember the DISMAL seasons the BB teams had (several
years back in 2006-2009 if I remember we were LAST on SEVERAL
occasions) and the NCAA even placed the program on violation
because of the Low APR. But we did have a great seasons in
2015-16 and second place last year before getting blown out (by
the way we are also 0-3 in CBI Play) but am guessing the BB
history is lost on some of you.
As a parent of a current football player (yes I might have a bit
of a soft shell) I have been waiting for ONE of you so called
fans to even congratulate Timon Parris on his preseason First
Team All American status or the All Conference guys of Stacy
Bedell, Shayne Lawless. Nope that would be too easy wouldn't it?
The football team APR is only about 50 points higher than
others, and for the past several years we have had records on
the Academic Honors list, but lets make sure we continue on the
rant to "the start of BB season" while trashing football.
[/quote]
Preseason awards are the dumbest things ever created. These
awards were only created to give media attention to the
Conference.
How do you receive an award for do nothing?
As always, a bad idea for parents to look at message boards.
Go Stony Brook football!!!

OK- how about the daily "carbone" deluge? My point was and STILL
is, that if you cant leave off the "don't worry BB season is in
about 3 months", then these ARE so-called fans in making this
statement. It shows a real lack of class and true support. If
you cant see that, then I don't know what else to write.

You do know that the comment of 3 more months until basketball
was a joke! It was to keep Hammer from having a heart attack.
Enjoy the season and don't worry about any message boards!
Go Stony Brook football!
A local kid just died playing football - let's have some
perspective on what's really important.
Peace and Love!

everyone please relax... we are all SB fans, and we all want the
program to win, and i think you have to approach this board
understanding that we might not all agree on everything.
* * *
on to rutgers. because of "regional" similarities, they
struggle with a lot of the same issues we do. student
disaffection, culture, their upbringing with/out the sport,
distractions, academic burdens, etc.
in this vein, we then have a very similar atmosphere to schools
like: st johns, fairfield, hofstra, sacred heart, columbia,
monmouth, montclair state, etc whether we like it or not. sure
they arent our peers from an academic, student body, athletics,
or research perspective. but we face the same "regional"
issues.
winning brings fans yes but can anyone here recall some winning
seasons where we failed to break 40k attendance?
what am i saying is- winning is only part of the equation. its
much harder to get 10k fans to LaValle when there isnt anyone on
campus. keep them on, and its a bit easier, though still
challenging.
how to fix?

LaxNation. Sorry, but you are wrong on several fronts. As to the
Preseason awards for "doing nothing" clearly you have no idea of
how it works or why. Its based on the previous year and
expectations of the current year and the group of individuals in
each position, but again lets focus on the negative aspects of
giving players shout outs for "doing nothing".
As a fact- the NFL and NFL combine use these preseason shout
outs for the scouts to come out before the season (just like we
had several last week here) since they have a limited budget to
do so during OFA, and more importantly how the NFL scouts give
out their draft grades to determine where a player might be
selected for next year. (again just like last week's visits)
As to parents on message boards being a bad idea, I think the
worse idea is having all knowing posters who probably never
played the game give us their "Insight" and game by game
"analysis" from the chair they sit in shouting out their
coaching advice which they normally don't have any experience
in. I enjoy watching the games and reading the comments, because
it shows just how little these "fans" know about the game so as
a former player and parent can offer something those who are not
in my category. A "balance" to the comments-which looks like
some don't like being called out on.
Finally yes it was terrible what happened to Josh Mileto and
hopefully his organ donations will help out another family, but
I certainly don't need a lesson in perspectives with all of my
friends who have suffered from CTE's and advanced dementia as we
watch our son play. No doubt, I am in the minority here- but
then again, I am probably in the minority of those who started
and played D1 football on this board. My last post on this!

Players, teams, and coaches all should start with a clean state
when a new season begins. I am just not a big fan of preseason
awards. If an NFL scout wants to know how good the kid was/is
just looking at the post season awards from the previous season.
You forgot to say "GO STONY BROOK FOOTBALL!l
