Game 31: AE Semifinals - SBU v. Hartford
DIR By: Checkmate
Date: March 2, 2016, 10:17 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Record: 10-22 (4-12 AE)
Last Game: W, 67-58 at Albany 3/2
Last 10: 3-7
Series Last 2 Years: This Year SBU 77-43 there; SBU 85-72
here. Last Year SBU 72-66 here; SBU 74-59 there
Notables:
6-4 RJr G Pancake Thomas 19.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 2.8 rpg, 1.2 spg,
.826 FT%, .424 3 pt FG%
5-11 Jr G Jalen Ross 9.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, .777 FT%, .375 3 pt FG%
6-8 Fr F George Blagojevic 9.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg, .376 3 pt FG%
6-4 Sr G Taylor Dyson 7.3 ppg, .383 3 pt FG%
Well, all bets are off. We haven't played our best, and we
certainly couldn't have expected the result up in Albany. So
never mind the seed and let's enter this game like it's any
other semifinal opponent.
Hartford's been playing better of late. The Albany win is
obvious, but they hung around here and they hung around in
Vermont, which is enough to get your attention.
More than 46 percent of their shot attempts come from behind the
arc. We have taken approximately the same number of shots this
season (UH 1799, SBU 1797) yet they have taken almost THREE
HUNDRED MORE THREES than us (837 to our 549). As UA found out,
the Hawks live and die by the three, and on Wednesday they
survived with it, going 12 for 30.
Ross, a transfer from Eastern Michigan, has been a nice wingman
for Thomas, a New Mexico transfer, of late. After modest
production in the first half of the year, Ross has racked up 13
straight double figure games. Obviously Thomas is still the guy
to focus your attention on defensively, but UH is a lot better
when he doesn't have to do it all Thomas has topped 25 points
six times this year and they've lost all six.
Pluses for UH: they're first in the conference in turnover
margin (+2.00), first in made threes per game (9.5) and second
in free throw percentage (.749). Minuses: they're last in
rebound margin (-11.8 ) and second to last in field goal
percentage (.406).

When our bus does not get stuck in a snow bank, we do not lose
to Hartford. See you next Saturday morning.

I would expect exactly the same approach from Hart as we saw
last night:
Rain 3's and Hack-a-Wolf on defense.
If the 3's don't fall and the Wolves make a few FTs, big SBU
win. If just one of those things happen, comfortable SBU win.
If Hart goes Darley and the Wolves continue to clank the
freebees, anybody's game.

I can't imagine anybody has a game like Darley did- he was on
fire. Raining 3s is one thing, absolutely not missing is
another.
Feed the Beast during this game- Warney embarrassed Hartford in
his last game (went for 36 and 13). They have no legitimate big
man inside.
Like Lyles, we have to tolerate Pancake scoring some points. I
would keep Walker on Pancake. We obviously have to hit our free
throws which we did against Hartford last game.
Looking forward to Monday, should be an awesome environment.
Take no game for granted.

To be honest with you, they played us exactly the way I would
have played us. Tempo. Pressure. A soft zone. Dare us to shoot
the ball and see what happens. - recently vanquished Will Brown
I can't remember if we saw much zone against Hartford the last
time. I wish I had more faith in some players from the perimeter
(i.e. Walker, Mitchell, Thrower, the bigs) but I also like the
chances of Jameel and Ray cleaning up on the offensive glass if
they do, a la the last time.

Our offense has always been predicated on taking low-percentage
contested shots and having our big guys go clean it up.
Hartford's zone is only going to help us out on that end.
They're not especially big, after all, and Warney, McGrew and
especially Walker have KILLED them on the boards this season -
especially Ahmed. The zone is tailor-made for them not marking
his athletic cuts to chase down the caroms.
And, considering they're going to have to pack it in, hopefully
that gives Woodhouse and Puriefoy some daylight from the
outside.

Spread is 19 for tonight's game.
Of the conference tournaments that are through the semifinals
already, only four of the nine top seeds have reached the final.
Hofstra (CAA), Monmouth (MAAC), Wagner (Northeast) and
Chattanooga (Southern) are still alive. The No. 1 seeds were
ousted in four semifinals - the Atlantic Sun (North Florida lost
by 33 to No. 4 FGCU, the eventual champ), Big South (High
Point), Missouri Valley (Wichita State) and Ohio Valley
(Belmont). In the Patriot, top seed Bucknell lost in the
quarters.
Long story short, this isn't a slam dunk no matter what's
happened before. Let's do our part and make it a tough place to
play.
FYI, Vermont is an 8.5 point favorite in the other semi.

This is a blind folded, off the backboard, behind the back,
through the legs, slam dunk!

I don't see Hartford as easy. We look past them and we are out.
Must improve on the FT line we all know we leave too many points
there in just about every game. I expect a win but a close
game.

furious pace. too close for my comfort. for all the good
walker does, his ill-advised threes sometimes dont even hit the
rim. hartford is packing it in tight, making it difficult to
get the ball to warney. as a result, taking all threes.
hartford continually turning the ball over, yet SB cant break
away.
this is clearly NOT the hartford team that won 4 AE games this
season.
