SB weathered the storm. For a while it did not look like UMBC
was gonna miss. Good games from Walker and Woodhouse…I feel that
Woodhouse is the key. If he can knock down the open three's it
makes teams pay the price for doubling Warney. Nice help from
the bench. Good D from Kam and a big three from Nyama. Now we
need SB to hit 70% from the line for the next two games...

I agree with you on everything except Walker. Walker cant shoot
to save his life. 3 for 10 at the charity stripe, seriously
dude?. I can do better shooting lefty, and I am a righty. McGrew
had a bad night but, cant get down on him because of one bad
game.. What can we say about Warney and Tre. Those two stepped
up to the plate like seniors should. Good for them!!!!

Walker was 5 for 7 from the field, had 13 points and played good
shut-down D in the second half. Also, he played under control in
the half court offense. I don't claim to be a shooting coach but
it seems like he rushes his foul shots.

@ laxation good call…who do you have in the semi's? I'm planning
on putting my nest egg on whoever you like in the NH-Vermont
game. What could possibly go wrong?

Hammer, you're too hard on Walker. He is who he is - an
All-Defensive Team player for whom you take the good with the
bad. I actually thought tonight was the team's best night in
terms of shot selection, and for Walker by far. He took only one
three, and did what I think he does best, which is drive the
ball in the halfcourt set. He's effective getting to the rack
when he's in control (i.e. not dribbling in transition). The
fouling at the end was brutal, I'll give you that.
You're right on with Woodhouse though. We need him in double
digits on Monday and then, hopefully, when everything's in the
middle of the table next weekend. Also, he's a calming force for
a team that can be frantic and lack flow offensively.
Enormous night from Jameel. They obviously had no answer.
The big question is: where was Rayshaun and is he OK? Seventeen
minutes in a back-and-forth game like this makes no sense to me.
I see he started the second half then disappeared aside from a
one minute spell around the four-minute mark.
Or maybe the bigger question is: can we not throw up brick after
brick at the line on Monday? Total abomination tonight and a
major cause for concern.
I thought the bench was great. Huge effort from Nyama playing
major minutes down the stretch. There was a time when we were
down 59-56 and we have Nyama-Thrower-Mitchell-Sturdivant-Walker
on the floor. I said to my buddy "who the heck's going to take
the shot here?" Nyama drills a three to tie it, and after a UMBC
make, Walker banked in a runner in the lane. Ty, DeShaun and Kam
did what we needed them to do - mainly defend and give the first
five a breather.
I had the Albany game on my phone the whole night. What an
incredible turn of events. Let's not have a hiccup ourselves
here.

>>>The big question is: where was Rayshaun and is he OK?<<<
UMBC created a game that Ray could not play. I think we saw that
in the first half with him trying to chase down Darley,
unsuccessfully. By playing four guards/motion guys on the
outside and with the 3's falling, it was simple math: UMBC
scores 3, SBU scores 1 or 2.
Ray could have had a monster game and it might not have
mattered.
Credit UMBC for working a plan that gave them their only chance
to win, and it almost worked. Credit Pikiell for adjusting in
the second half. I think Ray's fine, although I think too we'll
see a similar game from Hart on Monday.

Fun game to watch last night, obviously too close for my liking
but great experience.
My thoughts:
Obviously Will Darley had a game for the record books- that's as
good a shooting performance as I've ever seen in my life, Steph
Curry-esque. As somebody who played a lot of hoops, when you're
in the zone everything is falling and Darley was in the zone.
Pikiell smartly realized McGrew was a horrible defensive
mismatch for Darley and took him out- Walker on Darley was a
different story. Also when talking about UMBC, I again have to
emphasize how good Jairus Lyles is- phenomenal ballhandler with
a knack to get to the hoop. He's my odds on favorite to be AE
POY next year. He's a high major talent IMHO.
Now onto the Seawolves. Walker had his best game in a while for
me- yes he is just an awful FT shooter (who isn't on this team)
but his rebounding and defense were game changers. Woodhouse hit
some huge 3s and we are gonna need that long-range shooting to
move on. Warney was an absolute monster this game- he just put
the game on his shoulders.
Most importantly, I hate to say I told you so but I'm a huge
Roland Nyama homer. He's such an athlete that it bothered me
that he wasn't seeing playing time- this was the first game
without his knee brace so I assume he had some residual
discomfort. He was just flying all over the court- remember that
one play he made on Lyles during a fast-break? He also sank that
huge 3. He's honestly a better player than Sekunda in the
all-around game- he rebounds, plays good defense, and has a good
long-range jumper. I expect to see the primary rotation be for
the next couple of games: He absolutely looks healthy and should
see significant playing time. Remember, he was very productive
as a freshman last year as well. He played with confidence today
and I look forward to seeing more.
