Game 16: SBU v. UMBC
DIR By: Checkmate
Date: January 11, 2016, 9:38 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Record: 5-12 (1-1 AE)
Last Game: W, 89-76 vs. Maine
Notables:
6-2 so. G Jairus Lyles: 25.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 3.3 apg, 3.0 spg,
.510 FG%, .410 3 pt FG%
6-0 so. G Rodney Elliott: 14.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.7 apg
6-6 fr. G Joe Sherburne: 13.1 ppg,
6-8 jr. F Will Darley: 11.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, .555 FG%
UMBC swept three games from Stony Brook in the 2007-08 season.
They haven't won since. That's a streak of 14 straight for the
Seawolves, with many wins of the double-digit variety of late.
We took both contests last year - 64-54 at the Bank, 73-61 at
their place.
The one to watch out for here is Lyles. He was a pretty big
recruit out of DeMatha, committing to VCU, but he struggled to
see the floor in a crowded backcourt there. He transferred to
Robert Morris, and then transferred to UMBC, sitting out the
fall 2015 semester but obviously making an impact upon his
return. Lyles shoots it at an impressive clip too. Carson will
be hard-pressed to keep Lyles in front of him.
Like Lowell, they really don't defend or rebound enough to be
successful. They've given up at least 70 points in 15 of 17
games this year - by contrast, SB has given up 70 just four
times, and hasn't in their last six games. On the glass, Lyles
is their leading rebounder at 6-2/175. They have very little
presence inside on either end so I expect Jameel, Rayshaun and
Tyrell to have their way inside.
UMBC got thumped by Albany to start out the AE slate but bounced
back to beat Maine convincingly thanks to a big second half. 27
from Lyles, 21 from Elliott.

Keep in mind, UMadeaBadChoice was only down by 2 at the half at
Albany.
Also, I thought these credit unions were supposed to be the
anti-bank, so the Bank is not a good name. How about calling it
the Island? Actually, I just like calling it the Gym.

This Lyles and the "25.2" number are hard to ignore. That's a
lot of friggin' ppg! And remembering Elliot from two years ago,
that seems like a strong combo that might give SBU some trouble.
In a conference with a lot of talented guards, I hope that part
of the game is a good show.
I understand Joyce is hurting and probably won't be his best on
Wednesday, and with a lack of other quality UMBC big guys I
would think SBU should be able to control the game around the
basket and get a win.

They're a more explosive team with the kid Lyles now playing but
realistically I can't expect them to put together 40 minutes of
basketball getting beat on the glass and letting teams shoot at
the clip they are. Albany shot it well and killed them on the
glass. I expect the same on Wednesday.
Man, the Bank sounds so good, I think. I used "the Island"
before but it doesn't roll off the tongue and I think of Long
Island as "the Island." I thought about CUs vs. banks before and
understand that they aren't the same, but it's still where
people put their money and where they finance things. I get your
rationale though.
The Den? The Onion, where we're mispronouncing the U in Union?

Just kidding. I just opened up a Dove chocolate and it said
"Coin a new catchphrase" on the wrapper. Let's put our heads
together, team.

If I win the Powerball, I would completely fund an ice hockey
arena on campus. The name of the arena would be the Ice House.

The Bridge? The Sound? The Pit? (for those that remember pit
hockey)

How about "That place SBU basketball plays games while they work
to get to a few NCAA tournaments..." :)

Absolutely. I thin SB is 20/2 so far this year. An ice rink
would spring board SB in to the NCAA div1 in a hurry!!

I sent an email to the head of marketing at IFCU - another
creative mind. I'll let you know if she ever gets back to me.

Does the Bridge have any kind of ties to SBU? Certainly rolls
off the tongue. The Sound is too water-y. The Pit is arguably
the most notable nickname of all college hoops arenas - New
Mexico's. Probably a stretch with the hockey.
In a perfect world, it's a nickname that can survive a
sponsorship change. That's why I like the Den a bit.
The University of San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion is called the
Slim Gym. Now that's good.
