Nothing.. Donohoe was a late addition. But I do know this. From
what little we've seen of him I'm not impressed.. Our bench guys
are not Div1 players. Coach P has them out the entire second
half, as expected and rightfully so, and they were on par with
Farmingdale, Div3 players. SB had a difficult time getting into
the paint against this tiny team and relied upon the 3 ball for
points. This is something that concerns me going forward for
next year. As far as playing This Div3 team, I was told by the
Associate AD, We were supposed to play Iona but they stiffed us
in late August and SB had to scramble to find a replacement
team.
My assessment of our bench guys:
Petras... Horrible and should not be a Div1 player, anywhere.
Nyama... Disappointment and is still extremely raw
Sturdivant... Slowly improving but still sloppy on the floor
Thrower... He should have stayed with Football, terrible
Mitchell... Mitchell is Mitchell and should only be used
sparingly
I really have to ask if there is anything that you do like about
SB in general. Every post is angry and negative. I have said
this before this is not Alabama. Did you ever play at this
level. Again I'll say none of this is easy. Instead of accepting
a game like this for being what it is, you have to start
criticising the bench. I'm glad we found out that Iona backed
out cause as I recall that was another mistake that the AD made.
Come on man, if you are that unhappy then don't go. Calling out
coaches is one thing, but calling out players in sports that you
probably didn't play at this level is getting a little petty.
Just don't go if you don't like what you see. I would like too
see the school do better, but it is what it is. Nothing bad
about sitting in a nice arena 5 mins from my house and watching
some college basketball on thanksgiving weekend. News flash,
they are not going to win a national title anytime soon, so as
Aaron Rogers would say "relax"

Chrissy.. I am not attacking the players personally, I stopped
that a long time ago after realizing we are talking about 18 to
22 year old kids in college and not the Pros. I do question the
coaching staff, a lot, for recruiting lower level players who
shouldn't be Div1 players and expecting them to play like Div1..
SB pays our coaches very, very well for a lower mid major school
and this is the case because our AD, President, Senator and fans
demand a winning program. If that coach can't find high level
athletes to come here and take us to the postseason, than I feel
that coach should move to the side and find a coach who can
considering how much $ they are being paid.. As far as me
attacking our new AD, you are mistaken and must be confusing me
with someone else. I think Heilbron is the best thing for this
University. I have high expectations for him taking SB to the
next level one day, or at least be in par with the schools in
the CAA.
I am not angry Chrissy, negative? at times because I strongly
believe we could do better Athletically in all sport programs
and feel with a some changes, SB can be a National powerhouse. I
think Shawn feels the same way!!!!!

Not a fan of this argument at all. If you want to tell him to
relax, that's fine. Yes, there are people who put a negative
spin on everything (and I'm not saying Hammertime does; I
haven't read enough from him). But as fans and consumers, we're
allowed to have opinions and to be critical. We're allowed to be
upset with a loss or an individual. To say that anyone who
didn't play college basketball should be a cheerleader at all
times is idiocy to me.
That said, Hammer, lay off the bench :)

Totally on board with Chrissy and Wolfie MD. Love how people say
obnoxious things and follow it up with "nothing personal."
Pretty sure the 5 bench guys took it personally. Even Donohoe, a
non-scholly walk-on caught a backhand ("not impressed'), and
he's just trying to enjoy the precious few minutes of PT he'll
see all year! All those guys...and the starters, will have many
more ups and downs over the course of the season. Just no need
for it.

I disagreed with most everything that Hammer said. Those guys
are valuable pieces of this team - just on looks and without
analyzing everyone else in the AE, I'd say we have a top three
bench in the league, if not the best. Donohoe does exactly what
every walk-on in the country does - shoot it a little, probably
better in practice than in the precious/frenetic seconds/minutes
he'll get in the actual game. I'm glad Pikiell got him in and
that he's on the board.
If Hammer feels the bench is lacking though, he/she has the
right to express that here.

SBU's bench sucks if we're in the ACC. For the AE, however, it's
pretty solid. Just my opinion. :)
BTW, in terms of what appears to be improved mobility and
awareness on the court, I give Petras the Most Improved Player
award so far. Of course I have not seen him firsthand against
any significant competition, but the kid looks like he put in
some work in the off season. A 6'11" guy who continues to
improve is a positive thing in the AE. Good for him.
So far based on chatter and scores it appears almost every team
in the AE looks about as good or better than last year. Should
be a dog fight come conference play. With good health SBU ought
to be right there in the mix in March, but I wouldn't predict
them running away with anything (as some have suggested).

How many guys on this Forum are Basketball season ticket
holders??? I am and I have watched the 2 home games, so far, up
front and payed close attention to our Bench guys in particular.
Moviefred, Petrus is not the most improved player this season,
so far. he still cant jump. He still cant rebound and he still
cant pass. I think the most improved so far are Sturdivant and
Sekunda.. Mr. Michigan and Nyama have not changed so far.
Mitchel is coming back from offseason surgery and gets a pass
this year.

The bench is not as bad as Hammer says, but that definitely
doesn't mean he's completely wrong either.
Petras has a role. Take up space in the middle and bang with
goons to give Warney a breather. We shouldn't expect more than
"buying Warney time". This is fine for me. As he's our 4th big
guy, anything more than 8 minutes/game shouldn't be necessary.
Sturdivant has had moments of really good play. But he's also
made some plays that made me shake my head. Inconsistency
happens, especially at this level. I'm hoping he can start to
have more good than bad. I think he's improved, and I think
he's going to be very good for us.
Nyama, Thrower, Mitchell, etc. all of these guys have flaws.
If they didn't, they wouldn't be in the America East. If the
coaches put them in the correct spots, then they could be very
effective. Nyama is more of a swing-man/shooting guard type.
Asking him to run the point is just going to end in failure.
Thrower is a dribble-drive guy. Relying on him to drain three's
is equally problematic. The list goes on. If we use the tools
correctly, we should be fine. If we insist on jamming the round
peg into the square hole, we'll be in the CBI...
The game against Farmingdale was painful. I don't think we can
read anything into it. It's tough to be energetic for a game
like that. Unfortunately, this same type of game (heavily
favored, nobody really cares, etc) is the games we play against
Maine, Lowell, etc. in the middle of January. We can't be flat
against them.

Petras role is to get in the paint and grab rebounds and score.
He does neither, he cant jump..He makes him self small around
the rim and actually lowers his body when he attempts to shoot,
just pay close attention to him today..If I sit any close to the
floor I might as well jump in and play, so I have a perfect view
of the guys..
Sturdivant has potential as you state. I think he will blossom
after this season because he is so close to breaking out.
I agree with you completely with Nyma, Thrower and Mitchell..I
just wish coach P didn't put Nyma and Sekunda on a Pedestal
before and when they first got to SB. I had very high hopes for
those two because of his comments to the season ticket holders
last year. He did say Petrus was a "work in progress", but my
question is WHY?? Why do we still rely on work in progress. Cant
he find more talented players after all this time at SB!!!
