Game 5: SBU v. Farmingdale State
DIR By: Checkmate

Farmingdale has started the year 0-3 with losses to CCNY,
Brockport State and Ramapo. Need to get the second-stringers
ample time in this one.
I'm setting the line at 60. Who you got?

The one home game I get to go to is going to be this fiasco.
I'll be playing with the band so it should be a good time no
matter what. I agree with 60. Let's go Seawolves!

60 is about right and maybe in the 2nd half let new guys get
some minutes.

Nothing.. Donohoe was a late addition. But I do know this. From
what little we've seen of him I'm not impressed.. Our bench guys
are not Div1 players. Coach P has them out the entire second
half, as expected and rightfully so, and they were on par with
Farmingdale, Div3 players. SB had a difficult time getting into
the paint against this tiny team and relied upon the 3 ball for
points. This is something that concerns me going forward for
next year. As far as playing This Div3 team, I was told by the
Associate AD, We were supposed to play Iona but they stiffed us
in late August and SB had to scramble to find a replacement
team.
My assessment of our bench guys:
Petras... Horrible and should not be a Div1 player, anywhere.
Nyama... Disappointment and is still extremely raw
Sturdivant... Slowly improving but still sloppy on the floor
Thrower... He should have stayed with Football, terrible
Mitchell... Mitchell is Mitchell and should only be used
sparingly

I'm sorry, I have to call out these ridiculous criticisms of our
players. I agree with you on Donohoe, he's gonna be the last guy
off the bench and won't see any time in real games this year. No
mid-major is going to have studs on the bench, that's the nature
of being a mid-major. Also, shame on Iona from backing out of
this game- for a team that has NCAA aspirations out of the MAAC
for the last few years, they really should have manned up.
Petrus is a big body that can spell Warney from time to time- he
looks better to me this year. Nyama is recovering from a knee
injury, he is what he is right now- with Sekunda playing better,
he'll be the odd man out. Sturdivant still has a ways to go I
agree but he's got better rebounding technique this year.
I can't believe you're criticizing Thrower- his performance
against Vermont in the AE tournament last year was incredible. I
know you're prone to hyperbole, but come on man. Comparing him
to the D3 players is laughable. Kam continues to play good D and
is still a reliable 3 point shooter. As somebody who played
competitive sports for years, its hard to get excited and play
your best when you're up 40. I'd rather use performance from
last year in meaningful games to make my assessments of these
players.
Yes, I'm concerned about next year. It's going to be a
rebuilding season without a doubt. But I'm going to worry about
that when the time comes.

I agree we were horrible with our bench. Petras is no Warney
and drew 3 quick fouls against less skilled players. Everyone
else is just average . Farmingdale was allowed to score in the
paint almost at will . If that had been a real Div 1 team we
would be toast. We just took jump shot after jump shot no
interior drives no interior game period. Nothing gained by
yesterday except we are in trouble come next year .

Honestly don't think one can gauge anything from a game like
that. Snooze-fest for both the players and fans. This was
probably the biggest venue for Farmingdale this year, with lots
of local kids and no doubt family in the stands. With them
undoubtedly playing hard in a "big game" vs SBU just going
through the motions, I wouldn't read too much into any perceived
performance by SBU players.
Likely, too, a primary agenda for SBU was to not get anyone
hurt. Driving lanes, pounding inside against admittedly less
skilled players can be trouble. Best to just stretch to a
comfortable margin, keep things quiet and safe, and go home.
Really was a wasted game for SBU, but if this was a late
addition to the schedule and scramble to fill a spot, guess
that's just what it was....

We're really getting on the bench? I think it's one of the
team's biggest strengths! They've played meaningful minutes in
important games in the past. They'll give us what everybody
else's bench is going to give them - a breather for the 5-7
players who will play 30-35 minutes a night. We're not looking
for all-conference guys, just those who can defend, rebound,
break a press, etc., while also knocking down shots
occasionally. The core group of Warney, Puriefoy, McGrew, Walker
and either Woodhouse or Sekunda is the best starting five in the
AE, and I feel comfortable going 10 deep really.

If you were there, it was far from a game where they were
pounding it inside. It was about ball movement more than
anything else. It was refreshing to see guys making the extra
pass and finding the open man. Sekunda, Nyama, Mitchell, etc,
had a million open looks, and everybody else did too if they
were interested in shooting. I'm not saying it means anything
whatsoever, but in the iso era, it was nice to see the ball
going in and out, from one side to another and back.
