SBU 2015 Season Stats
By: ddmd Date: November 15, 2015, 8:00 am
---------------------------------------------------------
What stand out in the season is the enclosted on the season
stats...
Third down conversion: 33% (Play calling)
Third Quarter: 50% reduction in scoring (coaching)
Penalties: 400 more yards then the teams we played (stay
aggressive but focus)
If SBU could resolve these issue the team would have a winning
record

Stats I have a problem with...
FG's 50% 4-8 (long of 38, misses from 24/27/37/44)
This just isn't good enough for this level. This means that we
need to get the ball inside the redzone just for a 50/50 shot at
a FG. Outside the 20, and it's just not an option.
Longest plays from scrimmage...
70yd Daniels catch
57yd Bedell run
45yd Liotine run
41yd Bolden catch
In 9 games we've had 2 plays over 50 yards. 4 plays over 40
yards. No explosiveness at all. Either that is because of
risk-averse playcalling, or being unable to make something
happen. Either way, this is not good enough.
RB's have only caught 3 passes all season
That's one catch every 3 games. Teams know the RB isn't a
pass-catching threat at all, so they don't need to protect
against screens, wheel-routes, etc. Anything that makes it
easier for the defense is not good.
Net Punt average of 33yds 98 out of 123 in FCS
Averaging 8 penalties a game 99 out of 123 in FCS
Third down conversion rate of 31% 100 out of 123 in FCS
Total Offense, yards per game, 298ypg 104 out of 123 in FCS
So we have an offense that is near the bottom of the FCS in
gaining yards and sustaining drives. We make it worse by losing
yards via penalty. And when we are forced to punt, we don't do
it effectively. Since we can't flip field position because we
don't have any ability to create explosive plays, this just puts
constant strain on the defense, which eventually gives up
scores.
And these are the same things that plagued us last year (and the
year before).
If this is going to be our "style of play", then we should have
stayed in the Big South.

I believe they do not like to throw to the middle of the field
due to high risk i would love to see more quick slant & post
routes. The average catches of
1# TE in the CAA has 30 cathes a season & SBU has 9; we never
run a 2 TE set in the passing game.
I scratch my head every time when it's 3rd down & long the they
bring carbone in; this is a dead give away on the QB keeper. We
ran a few screen routes in the game & they were effective.
I also thought the tripps were effective at times in the last
game.
Using the RB or FB out of the back field would be nice....
Most teams put 6 to 8 in the box on our OL' you will not be
effective running the ball; you half to go to a read & to quick
pass routes. You will then force the DB to spread & cover the
passing game.
These things are basic & can be effetive if used correctly.
Third down & 13 & we go to a off tackle run; lets tell the
offence you dont have confidence in the big play & let's hand it
over to the D & they will give us the ball back....
It's very clear that Connor has the better arm this year; i am
hopeful Carbone can learn better technique in the off season or
we find a complete QB w great ball skills going into next year.
I have heard the kicker has m issue w his back so i am going to
lay off that topic...having a bad back is the worst. I guess we
don't have depth in that position.
You cannot to put all these issue on the players; the coaching
staff needs to make adjustment to the offence game; D looks good
by the stats. I would like to see the do man coverage more in
the passing game.

the explosive plays were supposed to be Bedell breaking long
gainers. no joke. this staff never intended for the passing
game to be explosive. Bedell got injured and our entire offense
went in the trash can. that is unacceptable. coaching has to
adjust to injuries. we have not. period. go back and look at
how much Bedell was run in those two early blow out games. he
should have been on the bench in the fourth qtr, then maybe his
shoulder would not have given out one game later vs WM.

So now Bedell's shoulder injury is a coaching issue. That's
laughable. That wasn't a chronic injury he was playing with. He
took a hit and got injured. Blame coaches for bad offense and
etc. But that just makes no good sense. Players get hurt playing
football, that's it. There is no conspiracy theory.
