I'm pretty sure that today was the worst game of SBU football I
have ever seen in my 15 years of watching.
We botched the end of the first half by wasting a ton of time
before calling a timeout after stopping them on third down.
Either because Chuck didn't realize the clock was running, or he
didn't want to run a 2 minute drill. As a result, 30 seconds
ran off the clock before he called a timeout (so we lost the
time AND the timeout, which was pretty much the dumbest option
       available).
We botched the end of the 4Q. Down 14, 5 minutes to go, and we
still kept trying to establish the run. The only passes we
threw were within 7 yds of the line of scrimmage.
Chuck was on the sidelines, and for most of the game there were
no players within 10 yards of him. During timeouts, the
coordinators spoke with the players, while he did virtually no
communicating. That is a REALLY bad sign that the team and the
coach are basically done with each other.
The play-calling came from the sidelines (coordinators, not
Chuck), with the coaches making sight-adjustments on each play.
The problem was that Elon didn't disguise ANYTHING (in fairness,
they didn't need to). I don't know what adjustments or reads
they were making, since each play Elon ran a basic 4-3 defense
with DB's all within 10 yds of the LOS. We'd go to the line,
the coaches would then check to one of three running plays (none
of which were designed to stretch outside the TE), we'd get
stopped, and the process would repeat.
There were a ton of dropped passes, and there was zero running
game. I don't know if ANY quarterback would be able to succeed
in those circumstances. He also made things worse by missing
some reads and missing some throws. Two of the interceptions
were on the WR's (one was a drop that turned into a pick, one
the WR just gave up on his route and gifted it to the DB). One
was a great catch by a DB, and one was entirely on Carbone.
Overall it was a poor game all around.
The star of the game for me? One of SBU's athletic trainers.
Beverette banged up his ankle, and she got it taped up really
       nicely, and pretty quickly.
I'm intrigued to see what happens with attendance the next two
games. It was pretty bad today, and I wouldn't be shocked if it
gets worse. There couldn't have been more than 25 students at
the game, and the rest of the stands were pretty empty.
Realistically, we could end up 2-9 on the season. Maybe we can
get Jim Gush to come back to SBU? He's at Baylor now...
       [/quote]
I didnt want to say it on the board but a few already knew it. I
said we were going to lose this game. The team have given up on
coach P. They abandoned ship and the Captain lost all control of
his crew.. I honestly want us to lose out so the decision by our
AD is easy. Coach P should and most likely will be fired after
this season, unless SB doesn't have the $ to buy out his
remaining contract. Thanks to Jim Fiore!!!

I would tell SH to just take the Word document he prepared for
the firing notice of the women's HC and do a "find" and
"replace" with Coach P's name in it. One only needs to look at
the overall team and see that nothing really is working. There
are a lot of "cause" and effects in football, just as there is
       in life.
For instance, when you cant move the ball on offense then it
puts pressure on special teams to always try and flip the field
or pin them back, or on the D went we cannot execute on special
teams. Or if our defense cannot stop a mid field drive and the
opposing team can pin our offense back (just look at the facts
and you'll see what I am writing about) we are constantly on our
"heels" in these games. And then of course the penalties at all
the wrong times-is another issue, or getting bet on the long
       ball with our DB's.
In life this is akin to a crappy product that you cant sell, or
when you do sell it- the customers only really bought it because
the product due to the sales guy who sold you on it (classic
case in recruiting in no matter what sport). Many of our kids
were sold "software" that is not working and was written by
software developers writing "mainframe" applications from the
70's where customers nowadays need to newer software
applications.. Heck- lets go a "coaching platform" of CaaS
(Coaching as a Service model) and bring in a new "coaching
Platform" of younger guys in the mix (or at least guys who have
       "customer references").
Here's an idea. Whether you use CB, JC or PI as QB, stop the
goofy setting up and then trying to look over and change the
play calling. Just friggin call the play in the huddle- and if
you MUST make adjustments let the QB make it and not some clown
up in the press box or on the sidelines. You are not fooling
       ANYONE.
I don't to totally want to beat up the kids and if any of you
who actually played the game at the highest level, you will know
its NEVER fun losing and clearly not 5 in a row; especially if
you come from a program that normally has a lot of "W's.
Watching films on Sunday or Monday and getting chewed out by the
coaches (who are calling the plays) is a poor example of
leadership. BUT- as I said last week, any pride these kids
should have comes from THEIR own pride. As a player it was
always up to ME to perform at my best. And while I won't cast a
wide net as others, clearly there are some who have mentally
quit. For the captain to have quit (if that is the true case)
then he should be held accountable to himself for his actions-
but to me is a lack of leadership when you are chosen to wear
that "C". And you finish the contest.. no matter what. That is
why you are "chosen" as the Captain.
And lastly, as the software product we have delivered to CAA
these past few years, it is clearly a bunch of code- that needs
to be re-written and the hardware we are running needs a SERIOUS
upgrade. And as in life our kids have to come to the realization
that the "education" they are getting on the football field will
serve them much better in life. The real question is does SH see
him as a mainframe guy in a dying industry or as a person who
sees himself as a "company" like many in need of "change
management" to gain more customers (our fans and recruits)

We don't run a 2 minute offense because we don't have one. I
swear that's true. We tried to run deep routes an Carbone threw
       four picks.

Here's why there is no chemistry on this team, just look at how
P has treated his four senior captains this season. Captain 1,
our best D player, gets in a scuffle with a team mate and P
yanks his captain badge before the season starts. Captain 2
gets pissed off and quits when P yanks him as a starter and puts
a RS frosh in his place. Captain 3, our senior QB is never
given a chance to play an entire game and us instead humiliated
by the QB shuffle. Captain 4, a warrior, plays with two torn
labrum a the entire season. Seems unlikely to me that a team
would rally around a coach that jerks around his captain
       leadership like that.

In my opinion, the players are the least to blame for the
       failures of the team.
Just a thought, have we run a screen pass all season? Wheel
route? Any type of flair route from the backfield? As of
yesterday, the only RB who caught a pass was Fredericks (1
catch...) How about easing pressure that way?
Another thing we didn't see was any type of designed deep-shot.
And by that, I mean a basic 9-route where Carbone takes a seven
step drop then chucks it as deep as possible in the center of
the field. We had a few sideline routes, but nothing more than
       15-20 yds out.
Since we have no real "big play" threat, no running game (on the
season, we average 3.0 yds per carry), no passing game (50%
completion, 158 yds per game). and no real offensive game plan,
why not try some of these concepts that every other team uses?

We dont have deep threat WR who can get seperation; I agree with
the short passing game using RB,TE or slot; this should help
open the deeper ball when the DB start closing up on the line of
       scrimmage.
I think we should also go to the power running game using double
       TE & a FB.
Teams now no SBU weakness at pass coverage; this is due to the
injuries & are 1# DB leaving the team.
I would send pressure as much as possible on the D side; we
havven't put much pressure on the offence up the middle.

I know that I have been hammering the staff pretty hard
recently. one encouraging thing I saw vs. Elon was that Carbone
was actually on a head set with Behrman when the offense was on
the sidelines. that did not happen in earlier games to the best
       of my recollection.
heard an interesting thing on Monday Night Football yesterday
regarding relationship between Cam Newton and his O coordinator
Mike Shula. Shula won the Best Coordinator award in the NFL
last season for his work with Newton. Three of the key things
Shula does are: is open minded about play calling, listens to
his QB, and calls plays that his QB is comfortable running. I
think our staff gets a grade of "F" on all of those items.
