Team on top: Many experts like Albany to capture its fourth
straight America East regular-season and tournament
championships, but Stony Brook might stand in the way. The
Seawolves return eight starters from last season’s team that
went 5-1 in the conference. The offense will miss graduate Mike
Rooney (48 goals and 63 assists), but does welcome back five
starters including its entire midfield of seniors Challen Rogers
(30 G, 23 A) and Chris Hughes (17 G, 14 A) and junior Alex
Corpolongo (23 G, 6 A). Stony Brook last qualified for the NCAA
tournament in 2012.

Challen Rogers, M, Stony Brook
Why do you have to be from Western Canada, Challen Rogers? Why?
Why are you the Jesse King of this draft? It’s so upsetting to
know that only one team is going to take you and they already
have a ton of Canadians! You can play D! You can create your
shot! You’re tough and get under your opponents skin! Why can’t
I watch you play in MLL every game this season? Every team could
use you! It’s so frustrating. Can the league get an airline
sponsorship and get some of these Western Canucks on rosters?
Anyone have a rich uncle? It’s driving me mad! Can we talk about
someone else please? Fare thee well, sweet, angry and promising
Canadian Prince. -KD
Brody Eastwood, A, Stony Brook
The first thing you need to know about Brody Eastwood is that he
scored 62 goals on 97 shots last season. Those numbers are
already borderline nonsensical on their own, but how about some
perspective to go with them? Eastwood’s 64% shooting (his
average over three seasons is 61%) was the best in the nation;
the second place guy, Army’s Connor Cook, shot 49%. Not
impressive enough? How about this: Eastwood’s 62 goals were
second most in the nation. The leading goal-scorer, Albany’s
Connor fields, scored four more goals by taking 65 more shots.
The man makes Hawkeye look like Hans Moleman, but based on
discussions with MLL coaches, it may not be enough for
non-Outlaws to pull the trigger. Why? You guessed it; he’s a box
star from Victoria, B.C. Assuming he heads home after
graduation, arranging that travel on a regular basis is an awful
lot to ask of an East Coast franchise (not to mention the NLL
conflict potentially looming in his future). Granted it varies
day to day, but last I made it up, the conversion rate is
something like one goal American equals about 2.3 goals Western
Canadian; it’s not fair to poor Brody, but to a GM with severely
limited resources, the 25-goal guy from the next town over
sounds like the much better play. -CR

13-5 (5-1)
Returning Leaders
Brody Eastwood (62, 6)
Challen Rogers (30, 23)
Alex Corpolongo (23, 6)
Face-Offs
Jay Lindsay (143-of-257, .556)
Goalie
Hayden Johnstone (12.28, .416)
Zach Oliveri (UMass transfer, 9.49, .532)
Best Case: Taking Over the America East
Stony Brook has just been a step behind the Great Danes the past
few seasons in terms of America East supremacy. This season,
ranked No. 23, returning eight starters and with lots of
positive momentum, is as good as any to knock off the top dogs.
If Eastwood and senior Matt Schultz (16, 18) stay healthy and
the speed of junior Ryan Bitzer (13, 8 ) frees them up, it's a
formidable attack unit. Add in spectacular midfielder Challen
Rogers (30, 23), and they will outscore many teams. Defensively,
the goal is for Zach Oliveri to backstop an improved unit, along
with sophomore Ben Randall continuing his progression and d-mid
Jeff Reh keying transition.
Worst Case: More of the Same
The Seawolves will surely compete for the America East title,
but can they get over that Albany hump? It'd hurt to fall just
short yet again. Even if they have more or fewer key
non-conference wins as last year, the only thing that matters is
winning the America East title. The offense will be good enough,
and on paper the defense is ready. If the D isn't better than
48th in the nation, though, that's a problem.
over at UA, faceoff mid connor Russell is rehabbing a knee and
oakes is supposed to return (?). those are two of the bigger
names over there. of course, there's fields and riorden.
Three Terps (Pat Young, Bryan Cole and Henry West) are
surely at the top of head coach Brian Reese and president Dave
Cottle's draft board. The most intriguing option, if he were to
slip to the 11th overall pick, would be Challen Rogers (Stony
Brook). The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Canadian buried 30 goals and
dished out 23 assists while shooting 45.5% percent as a
junior.
