here's my read on last night, I was at the game. We won the
first quarter, a quarter when it really mattered and everyone
was basically on a level playing field. we punched them in the
mouthy with a long scoring drive, capped off by a nice 30 yard
run by Bedell and a TD pass by Bednarski. the D was nails in the
first quarter. the O play calling was frankly, surprising, lots
of play action passing, QB running, and it really kept the
Rockets off balance. If we play like this the rest of the
season, all of you will be very happy as we will be in the FCS
playoffs.
Second quarter, after a 2+ hour time delay, and twice the boys
got loosened up and had to retreat to the locker rooms as storms
moved in. on the third try, the second quarter began. and we
looked terrible, both on O and D. the D got worked. and the O
and special teams did a terrible job. the play calling reverted
back to what we saw a lot of last season, three runs into the
middle of the line. botched special teams play left the O in
terrible field position.
Here is my big gripe, and its with the coaching staff. in the
second quarter, with the O looking really out of sorts, I saw NO
coaching of the offense taking place on the sidelines. as the
boys came in from the field after another 3 and out, they just
all sat on the bench talking to each other. Not one single
offensive coach came over and talked to the O skill position
guys. Bednarski sat at the end of the bench and not one coach
talked to him. Incredible. how can our coaches leave the
players to just hang out there by themselves. Coach P was all
jazzed up and talking to the O linemen after we got the TD, but
he was not seen in the second quarter.
Frankly, I think the boys and the coaching staff just wanted to
go home after that 2+ hour storm delay. they gave up.
Bednarski took some monster hits, one by a 300+ Toledo DL guy
when a blocking assignment was missed. Fortunately I don't
think there were any injuries. But come on guys (coaches) you
have to do better than what I saw in the second quarter last
night.

take a read of this from the Toledo newspaper. our AD and
coaching staff stood up for our boys and said NO to a 10 hour
bus ride home on Friday. that would have sucked big time.

In 1991, while playing lax at Stony Brook, we took a 563 mile
bus ride to Chapel Hill to play Duke and Carolina on back to
back days and take the reverse trip back to Stony Brook on the
bus.
Hey, we all know lax players are tougher than football players
;D. Maybe that's unfair considering back in the early 1990s,
the lax team actually had to shovel off the entire field of 3"
of snow, the day before playing Providence.

It was the right thing to do; the finacial cost would of been
$20,000 to $25,000 for the team to stay another night.
These kids already missed 3 days of school & had work to make
up; good call Shawn.....

They just started school, how much work would they really have
to makeup? It's Labor Day weekend, so they didn't have to return
to the classroom until Tuesday plus they could study on the bus.

Depends on your degree; i no 3 players who have a boat load of
cource work to due.
While traveling they were in FB meetiing to 9:45PM & up 9:30
back in meeting at 10am Thurs.
Traveling on Wed & time out of the class on Wed & Thurs put
them behind on cource work; They spent all day Friday trying
catch up on work for Bio & math that was due by Friday.
As muh as i love the game; the reason they are at stony brook is
to achieve a great degree.

in the old days i wouldve said suck it up, wait for the
lightning to stop and play in the rain. but if the
justification is the safety of the kids, cant argue with that.
right move, even if it sucks for fans, players, etc.
its like every time we get near an FBS win (army
notwithstanding), it gets yanked from us.

I live in a state were we get 47 inches of rain a year & i never
seen rain come down like that in 3rd quarter in Toledo for 30
min; the roads leaving were flooded getting back to the hotel.
The field was under water & water was pulling down the isle. .
You cant keep putting athlete out there & trying to have them re
warm for every wether break; the body going to tighten & your
going to wind up with inuries like ACL & MCL to the athletes.
I read SBU got payed $325,000 for this game & Toledo was trying
to get them to cut the contract; hell no that help to offset the
travel budget for the year.
