Albany-Stony Brook Rivalry
When you examine a team like Albany in the America East, you
can't help but mention their rival, Stony Brook. Since 2012, Joe
Spallina's first year at the helm of the Seawolves program, the
two teams have duked it out in the conference championship.
Last year, Stony Brook captured its second crown in program
history, topping the Great Danes for the second consecutive year
in their third-straight meeting in the title game.
But could 2015 be the year Albany makes a comeback? Although the
Danes are young, Spallina said they are "revitalized
offensively" and "pretty prolific scoring wise." They graduated
some key players, including Kathleen Lennon, Ariana Parker and
Allie Phelan, but Albany seems to be reloading, rather than
rebuilding.
Given the shakeup of the Nike/LM rankings so far this season,
and if all continues to go well for Stony Brook and Albany, the
lacrosse community may see two teams representing the America
East in the NCAAs come May. Albany just beat Notre Dame on
Tuesday night.
"We're both successful teams and organizations and I think
there's respect on both sides of the ball," said Battaglino,
whose team will play the Seawolves on April 4. "I consider Joe a
friend of mine. He's a great coach and a good person. I look at
it as a game where we're going to be tested. They know what
we're going to bring and we know what they're going to bring."
Both New York staples, the schools' rivalry extends beyond the
lacrosse program. It has been built over years of tradition in
the same conference. "It's a lot what's right with college
athletics and having that natural rival," said Spallina.
"It's healthy. It's nice that it's called a rivalry," added
Battaglino. "Both have been quality teams deserving to represent
the league at the NCAA tournament over the past several
years."
up one spot to 14 for beating jacksonville.
Yet a few upsets across the board caused some other
rankings to shift around. James Madison topped Penn State, while
Loyola handed Virginia yet another loss. Delaware dropped out
after falling to Temple and Villanova, but Stony Brook continues
to impress as they turn to face Florida on Tuesday.
Who's Hot?
Stony Brook (+1): The Seawolves are one team that no one can
count out. They topped Notre Dame pretty handily, and blew
Jacksonville out of the water. The first true test will be
Florida on Tuesday.
id say they are a national title contender, but have some
reservations because as weve seen in the past, after the first
4-5 teams, there is a HUGE dropoff. or at least thats the way
its been over the last few years.
doesnt mean it cant happen!
SB Women's Lax vs UMBC- two programs going in completely
opposite directions.

Joe Spallina — Since Terry already touched on my overwhelming
excitement about this month’s cover (You HAVE to check it out —
I’ve been like a kid on Christmas morning waiting to unveil this
beauty), I’m going to venture off the Maryland trail and say Joe
Spallina.
Talk about a whirlwind week for the Stony Brook women’s head
coach. On the heels of the Seawolves’ dominating performance
over Notre Dame last week, his team traveled south to Florida
this week and topped Jacksonville, 13-4, on Sunday afternoon.
After the Jacksonville win, Joe traveled back north after
receiving news that his wife was in labor. After meeting his
beautiful baby girl, he traveled back down to Florida just in
time for last night’s game vs. No. 7 Florida.
The Seawolves dominated from start to finish and never looked
back, topping the Gators, 12-11. Spallina traveled back north
early this morning after his team made history last night. He
gets to celebrate with his family and its newest member, Olivia,
upon his return home. Not a bad week.
also this:
13. Stony Brook (7-0) beat No. 8 Florida 12-11, beat New
Hampshire 13-4. Next: vs. Rutgers, Wednesday.
Stony Brook posted a solid win over New Hampshire, showing no
hangover effects from its big win over Florida earlier in the
week. Leading just 5-4 early in the second half, Courtney Murphy
scored her third goal of the game to ignite an eight-goal run
that closed the game for Stony Brook. New Hampshire became the
sixth team to be held to six goals or less by Stony Brook in the
Seawolves 7-0 start.
and if you care about cpu rankings, which i normally dont
(especially this early):
Freshman Kylie Ohlmiller is the real deal for Stony
Brook, leading her squad with 29 points. (Stony Brook Athletics)
This past week could win an award for the most exciting results
in the 2015 season. Boston College is officially the only ACC
team remaining that is undefeated and Stony Brook breaks into
the top 10 after an impressive showing against Florida.
Who's Hot?
Stony Brook (+6): Last week was a whirlwind for Seawolves coach
Joe Spallina, but it was all worth it. Stony Brook shook
Division I women's lacrosse with their upset against Florida,
proving they finally deserve a spot in the Top 10. The Seawolves
earn the edge over Virginia with their undefeated record. (Stony
brook topped Florida 12-11. The Gators fell by one to Syracuse
in overtime. Virginia lost by one to Syracuse in
regulation.)
