The problem with the students ( I was one of them two years ago)
is that for the most part they don't care about Stony Brook
Athletics because they don't see their relevance in the college
sports world. As a result, the school needs to target the
community first, build a community fan base, and then the
students will react. Student have the mentality of "I'm not
going to the game, no one goes anyways"... so the school knows
that the only way of generating student interest is by
generating outside interest in the program. We are not a big
time football school where kids know 40,000 people will show up
every game.
The reason why homecoming has been so good lately is because
more outsiders are coming, and now the students have jumped on
the bandwagon. I remember back in 2008 when Homecoming didn't
use to sell out and students didn't bother to tailgate. NOW
everyone in school wants to tailgate THAT saturday because they
know its gonna be packed.
So yes, continue to target the community where there is $$$ and
potential fans and the students will tag along....

-No one here on campus knows what spring football is so i don't
think trying to get people out to scrimmages or practices is
realistic.
-However, couldn't agree with you more Chairman! That LIRR stop
is the WORST thing for the University. It makes going home much
easier for students. Also I think a major problem with students
attending games is who is trying to get them out to the games.
When it is athletics and the university that is advertising the
games its not "cool". If students and possibly most effective
USG would advertise and organize for athletic events, it could
be "cool" to go out to a game for a student. For homecoming it
is the student that are influencing their friends to come out
that makes it such a hit. Bottom line though is SBU has to WIN
AT HOME. If the new arena becomes a great home court advantage
they won't have a problem filling it up and making it a tough
ticket. Additionally, a lot of my friends aren't willing to go
out to football games after homecoming because it gets too cold.

Thank you Chairman, but I dont necessarily see this as off-topic
since it deals with football. I for one agree that the school
needs to make a better effort in getting the football games to
be a destination "event" for the students. regardless of
whether they go home on the weekends, or if they are commuter
students, they can "get" the spirit of football and return to
the games because their friends will be there, and it will be a
"good" and "safe" and "orderly" time. Also, with the heavy
influx of Asian and other forgein students to SB, I wonder if
football is just not part of their culture, so they could care
less about attending the games. in my mind, Homecoming is a
no-brainer, it should be heavily attended by the community and
the students. what is disappointing to me is to see the other
home games at La Valle consist of about 1/2 capacity or less
crowds. that is just outright pathetic. when our kids roll into
any other CAA venue, the stadiums are rocking. Even the Rhody
game last year, that I attended, they had a near capacity crowd.
we can do better at SB, I challenge the school, the student
body and the athletic department to find a way to get it done.

Chrissy, I flat out think its a mistake to cater more to the
community than to the students due to some unfortunate events in
2012. instead of "running away" from the students due to that
ugly environment, the athletic dept and the school should be
working hard to improve the situation and actually encourage
more "good" students to come out to the games. your biggest rah
rah folks are going to be students and alumni that had fond
memories of going to football games at SB, not the soccer and
lax families that have a curiosity about football but wont even
consider letting their kids play football.

BFF as a former student I would have to agree with the notion
that SB is considered a " suitcase college " and it always has
been. When Lavalle fist opened you were lucky to get 3,000. Now
they average between 5,000 and 6,000. Homecoming crowds were
about 5,000 max so I think the direction that they have taken
has worked. If they took away tailgaiting the crowds would
diminish to what they used to have. You heard from Edwin who was
a recent student and what he says has always rung true for SB.
With such a diverse student body the interest in football isn't
always there. As far as what I said about spring time being
about lacrosse in long island, my point was the community
focuses on different things at this time of year so they aren't
going to be interested in spring football but that doesn't mean
that they won't attend in the fall. As far as targeting the
families, you have to. You need the local community to support
your program. The idea is to have these young kids want to go to
SB when they get older, that's how you build a brand. Plus
families are going to spend more money at the gms and in the
stadium. Basketball played in a small gym so the attendance
numbers are a bit swayed. And they played a lot of home gms
during the week so there are more students on campus. As far as
overall attendance go back to 2011 and they had almost a sellout
for the Liberty gm and the Albany playoff gm,wich the wheather
was perfect for. In 2012 when the played Villanova it was down a
bit (5,000 -6,000 ) cause it was really cold. I don't know how
long you have been a fan but I'd say they have come a long way
over the past 10 yrs and I like were it's going. You can't have
intoxicated students ruining things for everyone else.

When you think about it we are pretty new to Div 1 football.
The major programs in the SEC or Big 10 have been around over
100 years and have a huge following. Also many of them don't
compete with two NFL teams in their backyards. We will
continue to grow. Went to an SBU -Robert Morris game once when
we were in the NEC. Cold nasty day with rain. You could have
sat anywhere in the stadium. Maybe we had 250-300 fans there.
Win the home games , get back into the playoffs they will come.
I think we only went Div 1 in 2002 so in 14 years we are now in
the CAA with two playoff appearances already.

We have definitely improved. We had the highest season average
in the history of the program this past season. Definitely
something to be proud of. But we can do better no doubt. I'm
hoping attendance goes even higher this year. We gotta rally
behind those wolves. Hype it up!
Also, look at that six year trend. It just keeps going up!

I stopped by to watch a little Spring Football
yesterday..Nothing earth shattering to really talk about besides
Stacey Berdell. He could go down as the fastest RB SB have every
had. He is small in size but makes up in speed.. On offense, I
noticed Arthur Dokes was nowhere to be found and that hurt the
front line. I just hope he was absent for the day.. The QB
position is just like last season, BIG PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Conor Bednarski threw a couple of pick's and was sacked twice
and his accuracy was off. Carlos Hernandez was slightly better
but again, nothing to talk about..Steven Ferreira showed some
skills.. I only got a glimpse of AJ Otranto and he was accurate
and could move around quickly in the pocket.. We should really
keep an eye on him and I think out of all out QB on the PS, he
could have a chance but, I wanna see more of him in practise....
Defense looked real strong once again this year and I am excited
to see some of our new Freshman, NT and DT step up and penetrate
the Offensive line... It's early in the season for 2014 and
there will be many changes from now to Aug but, I am still
concerned about our Quarterback situation, Maybe our Syracuse
transfer, John Kinder is real good and still have the skills to
be out starter!!!!!
