I am looking to watch the Scrimmage this saturday.. If anyone
has a preference about a particular player feel free to post
their name and number and I'll give you a report Sunday
morning.. I am really anxious to see how good Stacey bedell
performs

on this board, we have been chatting about what it would take to
move SB up to FBS level. one common thread is to increase fan
interest in the SB football program. take a read below about
what two CAA football programs are doing to get their fan base
jacked up about spring ball. seems like interest in SB spring
ball is completely under the radar. do the students even know
that spring ball is taking place at La Valle right now??
Just about every CAA Football squad has some form of an "open
practice" policy during spring ball, where fans can easily watch
or support their team as they prepare for the upcoming 2014
season.
While each school operates differently with their own methods to
get involved with the local communities, James Madison and
Delaware recently announced some pretty cool events specifically
relating to bridging the gap with their fans during spring ball.
The Blue Hens, who don't officially start practice this spring
until April 8, announced this week that for the second straight
year the team will travel to a local high school on April 26 for
a practice/scrimmage as well as host a clinic for youth in the
area. UD will conduct the team practice and skills clinic at
Milford High School, where the 'Hens will interact with fans and
kids alike, then put on the pads and showcase their own football
skills.
In similar fashion, JMU, under the direction of new head coach
Everett Withers for the first time this spring, will host its
first ever "Student Appreciation Day" on Saturday. It looks to
be a great chance for Withers and the rest of the Dukes to speak
with students and give them an inside look into the program. For
an hour or so, students will be able to meet the coaching staff,
win memorabilia, even tour the team's locker room and try on
helmets if they please.
As you can guess, the Dukes are pumped for the first ever
student-centered spring ball event.

I believe that all practices are open to the public. In 2012 SB
held an intra squad scrimmage at Sachem North high school during
summer camp. They invited all the local youth football programs
and also held contests with tickets as prizes ( they were giving
out the tix whether you won or not. Last year the event was
cancelled due to weather. Except for the die hard fan I think
spring ball is a tough sell. If the team is good the students
will come. They would rather target the families on long island
cause they will keep coming over the years. Most students are
here and gone in 4.

A couple of years ago they ran a summer scrimmage in Seaford.
Turn out was fair but we had our share of tailgaters and kids. I
believe that was Mike Coulters senior season. Getting the
students and moms and pops pumped up for football and hoops
will be a work in progress for awhile.

Chrissy, I tend to disagree, the student fan base is huge
potential. I'm not on campus, nor in the area, but they should
be hyping football to the students and get them to follow the
team now. is there any mention of spring football in school
on-line paper or elsewhere? a few days ago, I looked at
Newsday, and there was no mention of SB spring football. out
here in Los angeles, USC and UCLA spring football is all over
the local papers, there is real interest in the spring "season".
and if SB is the only legit college football program on Long
Island, you'd think that Newsday would promote it. " what's
going on in the battle for the QB spot this year? who are the
key defensive guys, etc, etc, etc." I think this is an issue
for the SB media relations team. they should be out there hyping
it up. and the absence of a full time AD hurts us even more.
I cant believe how long that situation has dragged on.

BFF, what I stated was info that I gathered last season after a
conversation that I had with the asst. athletic director during
an alumni function. He had told me that as far as a marketing
budget they were dealing with 40,000 per yr with large portion
of that going to gameday payroll. He also stated and I have
passed this along before that at the 2012 homecoming there were
quite a few disorderly conduct issues with the students that
almost led to the university banning tailgating. The agreement
to continue was to cater to the families and make sure it was a
family friendly atmosphere. I was there in 2012 and would not
have felt comfortable taking kids to that gm. If you look at the
record crowd at last yrs homecoming gm, then you would have to
agree that they went in the right direction. I too feel that the
students need to be involved but not at the expense of the
majority ( the kids need to cooperate ). As far as what they are
doing at USC and UCLA, that is a totally different animal. There
is no pro team out there and you are talking about big time
college football. New AD or not this is life in the FCS. Also
remember that spring time in long island means that lacrosse is
king and families and kids are focused on that with tournaments
and travel teams on every weekend there is no time to worry
about spring football.
