Hopefully that report isn't just a rumor. If the problem was
that the state legislature was holding up funds, you would think
the big news would be that the funds were released. I haven't
heard that yet.

The funds were released already. Not frozen anymore. The
Statesman released an article a while ago saying the money was
available (Post #6 above). Matt sort of confirms that the Arena
renovations will be starting up soon

Quite frankly, I'm surprised at how little excitement this
announcement has seemed to generate among you guys. I don't
even go to the school and I'm excited for you! I have been
reading all the conjecture about a possible CAA move, but I see
basically no SB talk on the AE forum. I must admit that it's
almost over-run with UVM fans, so I understand if you guys don't
want to post there, but the lack of chatter on your own site is
surprising.....from an outsiders perspective, from what I've
read and seen on your web site, this place looks really nice.
My question is what do you guys do for the next two years if you
get a chance to host the AE title game again? Where do you play
the game? At any rate, congrats on the arena. My guess is that
you are in the CAA within 2 years for football, and all sports
within 4.

Always good to hear from you Quickdraw. We appreciate your fresh
perspective. If/when SB hosts the next two title games, the
university will have to rent another arena on Long Island. Don't
see how they can have the new arena undergoing renovation and
still dress it up for a game as they have recently.

I'm a little surprised as well. I think part of the lack of
excitement is the athletics department has been pretending that
construction was about to start for the last four years, which
isn't their fault because they had the rug pulled out from under
them, but still has taken some of the excitement away. I think
it's perfect size for us. If we can continue winning, and maybe
start winning a couple of the more marque out of conference
games, I could see us regularly selling out 4k seats. It looks
and sounds like a first class basketball arena albeit modest
sized, which is perfect for us. I'm also excited about the
potential for the athletic department to rent it out and raise
revenue for the budget, but that's just an added bonus.
I'm hoping with the arena officially out of commission we may be
able to appeal to have the championship game in Prichard, if we
found ourselves in that situation.
Quick, How do you think SBU would fare in a VCU and ODU-less CAA
if they get invited for 13-14 season?

I get it, that makes sense. 4 years is a long time. I haven't
been following you guys that long, but I definitely
understand....4,000 seats is a good number, although a bit small
if you make the move to the CAA. However, I've been to Drexel's
gym, as well as Delaware, and I believe neither are that big
(pretty sure Drexel's isn't, and they are the favorite next year
in the CAA). If you are getting close to a full house for home
games, that atmosphere is certainly good enough for the CAA. I
thought you showed very well in the AE Championship Game, so it
appears that with your student body that you can certainly fill
it. I also say this b/c it's obvious that you are improving
your talent base. To that end, your question about competing in
the CAA (to me) depends greatly on this year's recruits. If
they are as advertised, I think you can certainly be competitive
right away. Coley and his class will be Seniors, and your 2012
recruits (along with Mayo) would basically be the team. Again,
all dependent upon this class, because any move would certainly
allow you to continue to attract very good recruits. As you
guys know, I'm a bit biased in that I have seen Warney and
Puriefoy both more than once, and I feel strongly that they are
CAA-level players. The unknowns are Reid, Burnett, and a big
one is King! If they are all as advertised, I think you can be
"competitive" right away. Certainly not a top team and/or a
favorite, but also no worse in that league than W&M has been
recently, for example. What I like, as an outsider, is
Pikiell's focus on defense and rebounding, despite not having
top of the line talent. With better players, that focus being
the same to me means a pretty good team....time will tell.

Just for giggles, here are the arena numbers for the remaining 9
teams in the CAA; you guys would be second smallest, but not by
a lot, and if the place is packed, you have a definite home
court advantage, which I'm not sure any of the teams remaining
can say short of GMU. Actually, the smallest arena (Drexel)
might have as good a home court advantage as anyone. I was at a
Drexel home game this year and it was crazy! (Georgia State had
no great home court, but VCU and ODU were out of control!)
Anyway, here are the numbers:
George Mason: 10,000
William & Mary: 8,600
James Madison: 7,156
UNC-Wilmington: 6,100
Northeastern: 6,000
Hofstra: 5,046
Delaware: 5,000
Towson: 5,000 (new arena in '13)
Drexel: 2,300

I'm fortunate enough to have a familty member who is close to
someone at SBU that has seen the plans for our arena and alot
artists conceptions of what it will look like. It will be a
crown jewel . Nothing like it on the Island thats for sure.
