that Stony Brook played an actual game today...

Negron is going to give us heartburn this season. He clearly
looks rusty and I think today scrimmage is actually a good thing
for him, he needs more playing time to get better. I am afraid
he's not there yet ~~~Had we played BC, we probably would have
lost. If we had Essington, then we crush them.. Will Tye is a
beats and Poteat looks promising .. Defense looks solid as well
as our 2 starting WR .. The issue is going to be with our QB,
period !!!!!!

I watched the scrimmage, gotta admit I liked a bunch of what I
saw, didn't like some things...
Coxson, Eugene, and Tye looked perfectly fine. A few drops
early, but thats going to be expected in the first "live contact
game" against an opponent.
Watching the offense in general, much like last year, I think
that the biggest obstacle is themselves. I wouldn't be shocked
if stupid mistakes (drops, false starts, illegal man downfield)
will stop them just as much as the opponents.
Negron needs to work on his anticipation, he looked kinda rusty,
and with the size/speed of the receivers, he needs to pull the
trigger and trust the team.
The O-Line looked really strong, but coaches seemed to think
they could do better. That is spectacular news. RB's also
looked pretty good (Poteat wasn't excellent, but wasn't bad, and
Williams and Kenner looked like great compliments to Coker).
Punter Ferrara will be great. Hopefully we won't need to see
him much...
Davonte being hurt sucks, but the CB's looked solid. I like the
defense in general. But a lot like last season, the seams (TE's
and 3 WR's) will be the tough part.
Gardner and Solice both seem to do a whole lot of talking, and
tend to back it up on the field. I'm really starting to love
what I see. No confidence problems at all, and we'll need that
in the CAA.
Overall, as stupid as it sounds, I'm more optimistic about this
team than last years team. They seem more cohesive, and if they
can avoid beating themselves, they can do some real damage.
Or I could just be looking at it from a "can't wait to get back
to football" mentality.

I wouldn't at all be suprised if the team was better this season
than last season. We return four of 5 starters on the offensive
line and added a 350 lb gaurd with starting experience from a
BCS program. Our d line last year was really pretty young and
inexperienced. I think they could be dominant this upcoming
season. I think Stony Brook will be pretty elite in the trenches
this season.

Def line looked great today. They have a lot of depth and a lot
of speed. Def in general looked good. Rb's Williams and Kenner
looked good as well. I was not impressed with Poteat. Coxsen
look much better, he seems to have figured it out. Eugene is a
big target, looked really athletic. Liked what I saw from Tye as
well. I also noticed some more read option plays than in the
past. They threw out of it as well. D'Mato looked like he can
play, showed poise and was more athletic than I thought. I had a
long conversation with one of our def line starters dad and he
told me that SB still received the money from BC, so it worked
out in that aspect. He also told me that from watching a lot of
practice and also from what his son is saying that the freshman
class ( all are redshirting ) are for real. He also said that
the back up rb spot is still up for grabs, as that Poteat has
not impressed this summer. The guy I spoke to is a HS head coach
on the island so I think he provided some thoughtful insight.
Anyway food for thought.

We are going to enjoy Will Tye. 265 lbs with 4.6 40 speed.
Scored on a 54 yd pass play where he was lined up in slot vs
nickel pkg and therefore drew CB in coverage who Tye shrugged
off with ease after the catch. Tye does not go down and ran away
from d-backs after catch. Coker didnt play much but had one nice
run with a straight-arm that drove a tackler straight into
ground as if he were a child. Behind Coker it was Kenner who
impressed the most imho, although he got fewer carries than
Poteat & Williams. kenner runs hard and hits the hole quickly
without hesitation. I would like to see more of him. williams
certainly showed why he will get some touches as he showed great
speed on his long TD run. Coxson looks very good, was open a
lot. The jury is still out on Eugene as far as I am concerned.
Some nice flashes but a couple more drops. Same with Poteat -
just didnt stand out today. Dokes is huge but seemed somewhat
unpolished to me. Coach Woods hopefully can whip him into shape.
How far this team goes comes down to QB play. Negron certainly
has room for improvement. He got the vast majority of the snaps.
His accuracy was off at times. I agree with previous comment
that if we played BC today our QB play may have struggled.
D'Amato got 2-3 series at end of the day but showed some spark.
He is athletic and throws better than expected. He may be closer
behind Negron than we realize.
There were about 30 redshirts on sidelines. There were some very
big bodies among them.
This was probably a good measuring stick type of day for the
coaching staff. There are definite areas with room for
improvement. But all in all, it was a good day. The team has
loads of talent on the field.

I guessed about a 1,000 fans also. Not bad for a scrimmage on
Labor Day weekend. Overall the team looked good . Big question
is if Negron can get the ball to our receivers we will win
games. Jamie Williams looked very good today as Coker's backup
he has decent speed. Our backups were better than Penn's
which tells me we have good depth. Kicking game looked
solid . So all in all let the real games begin.
