New Athletic Projects?
By: sbufan Date: October 4, 2011, 5:35 pm

Last night Joe Spallina mentioned that there were some athletic
projects that are about to be announced. Any guesses as to what
projects he is referring to? I'm hoping the arena renovation
money is finally being unfrozen.

Where did you hear about this? Was it in Seawolves Night Live on
WUSB.FM?
The most reasonable project that we should embark on completing
is the Stony Brook Arena. If that's not the case, then I want it
to be something related to LaValle stadium and some sort of
expansion even though right now its too soon to think of
expansion.

Yeah it was on seawolves night live last night. Spallina was the
last segment at 7:40.

Yeah. I just listened to the replay a couple of hours ago. Seems
like Spallina is very optimistic of Women's Lacrosse this year.
I hope that the girls that followed him to Stony Brook do a
great job here.

Expanding LaValle is pointless until we can fill the facility
when it's not homecoming. It would be WONDERFUL to see the arena
finally renovated, however.

Agree with Redwyn the arena first. We are recruiting high in
basketball and a new house would help draw more high level
talent. Interesting to see what the attendance will be Saturday
night. Weather is forecast as mild and no rain. Maybe 6k plus
?

It obviously makes more sense to upgrade the Stony Brook Arena.
I threw the LaValle expansion option in there, but it is not
necessary right now. Attendance levels have gone up, but the
average of 7002 is still below the 8,000 mark and I doubt we
will able to keep that average at that level for the rest of the
season...
It strikes me how the Athletic Department promoted the Home
opener and the Homecoming game so much. Its already thursday, I
haven't seen flyers of Saturday's game around campus yet... :(

While the Arena is the most pressing problem, there is some
merit to expanding the stadium. I'm sure Fiore is chomping at
the bit to have SBU football move up to FBS and join the Big
East, which is HUNGRY for new members after being down to six
football schools. I don't know where the funding would come
from...certainly not the state...but perhaps from some rich
alumni who are big fans, or maybe even the Big East itself
(though I'm not sure that's possible).

The Big East as a football conference is not long for this
world, especially with word today that TCU is being poached by
the Big XII. Fact of the matter is that the new majority
membership will push the Big East back to its original intent -
a high caliber basketball conference. Its membership will be
dominated by small parochial private schools. U Conn and Rutgers
will end up fleeing as well, followed soon by Louisville, Cincy,
and USF.
We are not built to a be member of the Big East. However, I do
see us being a CAA member in the next 5 years, and much of that
DOES rely on renovations to the arena. Our developmental trend
is closer to that of current CAA large publics rather than the
established Big East.
So yes, while LaValle is the key to our football attractiveness,
we should be pushing for CAA all sports, not Big East.
Rebuilding the arena first is justified in that scenario.

WOW.... SB and Big East in the same sentence... Lets not get
ahead of ourselves right now. We dont even have a fanbase that
can fill an 8k stadium. There is no way the Big East would be
interested in a school like Stony Brook... If anything, they
would start grabbing from the CAA or another conference before
they ever choose Stony Brook. We need 10 years at least of
consistent and notable improvement before we can join any FBS
coference.
