My Take

Got there about 15 minutes before tip, place was packed.
Vermont had a whiteout, giving out free t shirts and we all know
how much people love free t shirts. For the first time I think
all season we got punched in the mouth and never really
recovered. Our other losses were a result of playing teams more
talented than us (besides Sacred Heart). Vermont was out to make
a statement and we didn't have a strong enough mindset going
into the game. We got rattled by the refs and by the crowd.
Believe this, I have no doubt we are a more talented team than
Vermont. But Vermont is Vermont and they play defense, they
have shooters, and they play well at home. The crowd really was
the 6th man out there (maybe 7th, if you count the refs as 6th,
but it was bad both ways), they were loud and helped prevent a
Stony Brook run.
Warney had an off game defensively. Rugg is good, but he's too
skinny to be banging in the paint with him. Notice how good
Jameel is when he gets mad. That offensive rebound dunk was a
thing of beauty and he had a great block a possession later.
This coming in the 2nd half after he had missed a few chippys
and got blocked by Rugg. He had that look in his eye like "try
and block this dunk". He played alright on the offensive end
but missed too many easy buckets.
Guard play was bad. First game where we really missed AJ.
Puriefoy played ok, but was reckless with the ball in
transition, as was Coley. We are usually at our best in
transition but last night we were just not with it. Resner
should not be getting real minutes but as it sits, we have no
guard depth without AJ. Rouse and Lenny didn't provide much
last night but they didn't really get into the flow of the game
cause they only played for 2 minutes at a time.
Tommy had probably his worst game of the year. He was MIA in
the rebound department and the Vermont defense shut him down.
Couldn't create. Did have some nice lob and entry passes to
Warney though.
Scott King was a pleasant surprise. I think we'll be seeing him
taking McAlister's minutes as the season goes on. At this
point, Eric is a better defender but if Scott can bring the
offense he showed last night it will be hard to keep him on the
bench.
Vermont simply played better last night. Patrick Gymnasium has
been our Achilles heel. We should beat these guys at home. And
this goes to show how crucial the number 1 seed is. That being
said, the big game will be @ Albany. Have to win that on the
29th. We should take care of business at home.
On a side note, the technical foul call on Tommy was garbage.
The ref who made the call usually refs Big East/ACC games and
watches guys like Mason Plumlee slap the backboard after every
dunk. Not that it really mattered, the game was in hand, but I
cant stand it when refs take matters into their own hands. Sure
the guys were going at it all 2nd half but if theres no
technical foul don't call a technical foul.

Even on TV you could see how bad these refs were. i was watching
the game with my two boys, who both play basketball for the TVL,
and they both said these refs were hottible.
Lets shake this lose off and get ready for UMBC and prepare for
a a couple of more road games coming up!!

Nice write up 09! Good job, couldn't agree more about King. He
can bring offense to the floor. Mc Callister seems to get - well
confused at times /

Top 25 Upsets on Saturday (away vs. home for winning team):
#6 Syracuse over #1 Louisville (away)
Wichita State over #12 Creighton (home)
Cincinnati over #25 Marquette (home)
#13 Butler over #8 Gonzaga (home)
#18 Michigan St over #11 Ohio State (home)
Wyoming over #15 San Diego St (home) - the same Wyoming team who
lost to below .500 Fresno St a game earlier
Overall upsets: 5 at home, 1 away
My points are twofold:
1. Good teams lose away
2. Winning at home can make a team that's not as good beat a
superior visiting team.
There's no doubt - SBU played one of its weaker games of the
season. Tommy was invisible and/or sick (hope sick), Warney was
marginalized by the 2nd half, and shots didn't fall when they
needed to. Vermont - on the other hand - had season defining
performances by 2 players who fans complained were only "sub
par" thus far. All in all, being at home helps...a LOT. Players
feed off the crowd, play on a familiar floor, with familiar
baskets. Patrick Gym has never been very kind to us, in a
similar way that Pritchard has been hostile to other visiting
teams (remember BU? They beat Vermont in Boston by 10).
A better representation of both teams will be how they handle
the rest of their away schedule between matchups. Albany is very
talented - UMBC and Bing have been upsetting, and Hartford
remains dangerous despite a few bad losses. If we bounce back -
I'm satisfied that we can still act and play as favorites. More
upsets, and our fan base can get reasonably worried. The string
of Jan 29th - Feb 9th where we play away at Albany, UNH, and
Hartford is where we'll see what our true colors are.
Remember, even Duke - at one point a prohibitive #1 - can lose
away. It's how they bounce back (by shelling Georgia Tech, the
ACC's version of UMBC/Bing thus far this season) that makes them
look as if one loss won't begin a skid they really can't recover
from.
This is a different year - a special year. I'm ready to start
believing. One game isn't going to change that.

I thought we dug ourselves a hole- early and deep- perhaps too
deep. Because they made a late surge and came within a few.
But we have to not forget that before pulling close, we went to
sleep.
SB has plenty of talent, plenty of opportunities left, and
plenty of time. They will be there in the AE Tourney when it
really counts.

Your point is well-taken Redwyn. I think there was
disappointment at the loss because SBU could have really put a
huge exclamation point on supremacy in the AE this season, but
that didn't happen. They may still be the best in the
conference.....just without the exclamation point for now.

Something about this last game vs Vermont and last year's
championship loss to Vermont that felt eerily similar. I was at
both games and from the first several minutes of both it felt
like it wasn't Stony Brook out there. Vermont has this ability
to take us out of our game and by the time we come to, we're in
a double digit hole. And both games we made a run, but way too
late. I think its less about our sense of urgency and more
about Vermont forcing their gameplan and dictating the flow of
the game. SBU coaches really need to focus on establishing our
style of play from the tip against Vermont. Bang it inside to
Warney the first few possesions, draw fouls, trap and create
turnovers on the defensive end and get out and run. Otherwise,
Vermont gets to pass the ball around in the half-court offense,
find an open lane and kick to open shooters or get midrange
pullups. Bang double digit deficit. We are too talented to
allow Vermont to do that to us.

09 point well taken. We go out blow away a fairly good Boston
U team that beat Vermont at Vermont and cant deliver ourselves.
We get two more shots at them so lets take 2 out of 3.

BU beat UVM in Boston.
Best 2 road wins in AEC this season are Albany at Hartford and
Hartford at BU.
UVM lost to Maine away
Albany got crushed by UVM away
BU got stomped by SBU away
Hartford lost to UMBC away
though strangely Bing beat Maine in Bangor...just weird how all
that goes down.
