RPI is meaningless to SB. We have NEVER been to the dance. Can
we just not choke and get there once before we worry about where
we might be seeded? Im also not sure about this team being on
the verge of a break through. You can't talk about it. You
gotta do it. Next year we lose Brenton. Without Brenton we
lose to Maryland and Seton Hall both by 20 plus. Take
everything else away and he still is the only player on the team
that can break a press. When he went out of the game Seton Hall
stole the ball at will.
Once we beat Manhattan and hit conference play I will cheer up
and this lousy loss will be forgotten. Today, however, we
should all be drowning our sorrows in another woulda coulda
shoulda that this team let slip away. BU in the final two years
ago, Vermont in the final at home last year, Seton Hall in the
NIT last year, UConn, Maryland, Seton Hall this year. You have
to find a way to win ONE of those games. You cannot tell me
that if we are in a close game in the AE tournament you will be
confident that this team will have the game plan and execution
to pull out the win. They need to prove to us that they can do
that!

In the Maryland game our big guys had a big night, our guards
didnt show up. Last night our guards and Brenton kept us in the
game, our bigs were not there. I expect we will do well in
league play and dominate a number of AE games but we have to
win in March something we struggle with. Lets beat Manhattan
and UNH next weekend and get 10 wins under our belt.

OK... I understand RPI is meaningless because at the end of the
day we need to win the conference. I get it... But still. I
would've like seeing stony brook get another nice win and a nice
RPI. Despite the "chockes" the past two years I remain confident
that the Brook will make to the NCAAs this year so for that
reason I worry about "potential" seeding...

Im just being cranky. I check the rpi website like every day to
see who has moved where in the AE. I wish I understood it
better. Is it possible for you to improve your rpi if you lose?
I just dont know a lot about the mechanics of it.

yes. Its possible. Strength of Schedule is taken into account in
the RPI formula:

After the one-point loss to SHU, Stony Brook moved up in both
Sagarin and KenPom. Those systems consider the winning/losing
score margin and (I think) if the game is played home or
away...RPI doesn't. That's why Sagarin and KenPom have better
predictive value imo. For example, Team A is 8-4 but won all of
its games by at least 20 points and lost its four games by no
more than 3 points. Team B is also 8-4, but lost all of its
games by at least 20 points and won its eight games by only 3
points or less. They have the same SOS. I'd give good odds that
Team A would beat Team B most days, and Sagarin and KenPom would
rate Team A higher. RPI would rate them about the same.

Manhattan game is a winnable game and should end the ooc
schedule with a winning note. That Seton Hall loss hurt. We were
so close.
