first and he only runs when he has to. He had issues earlier in
the year trying to force plays (guy draped on him, he throws it
"away" right into a defenders hands), but has only thrown one
INT in his last 4 games, and that was a lame duck long ball that
lost about 10 yards on it. If we are struggling offensively,
McGhee puts the team on his back and he will move the chains by
any means necessary. He doesn't have the most accurate long
ball, but is very accurate up to about 30 yards have a ton of
zip and usually the only guy who can make a play is the WR. He
is one of those guys that just has "it" and is a winner. He has
only lost something like 8 games as a starter dating back to his
junior year in high school (a junior now) when he played for a
top 5 national team at Trinity in Texas.

> RB - Started as a three headed monster, has really turned into
a 1 man show with a lot of rotation with one backup, Orenzo
Davis. Cody Kirk is the main man here, and when you watch him
run you likely won't be impressed. He, like Coker, gets a lot
of his yards later in the game after he wears teams down. He
isn't as big as Coker, but he is a solid 215 and is one of those
guys who always gets tackled on his belly, meaning he always
falls forward dragging guys. Davis is the speedster who spells
him, but has struggled at times this year with decisiveness.
Was a 1,000 yard rusher two years ago as the main back, sat out
last year with grade issues, returned as a senior this year to a
diminished role and hasn't quite returned to his all-conference
form. He is the big play threat if he gets it going. Tray
Robinson is the big 6'1 225 transfer from Nebraska, but he is
used mostly in the passing game (3rd on team in receptions) and
pass protection. He is invaluable in this role and is a big
part of the offensive machine.

receptions, 9 with at least 10, and 9 with TDs). They have a
bit of trouble with press man to man coverage in breaking free
and getting open. Tanner Bleskin is the main target between the
20s, but only has 3 TDs, and has missed or been limited by
injury the last couple games. I think he should be back to
full-strength for this game. He is a big target at 6'3 212, has
the best hands on the team, but lacks speed. John Ellis is the
speedster, but has a propensity to get a case of the drops, and
always always seems to get himself crushed by a defender at
least once a game. Everett Gilbert is the slot guy, and the
shiftiest of the three, but ever since his on and off hamstring
injury a few years ago has never returned to his freshman phenom
form. But he is the best of the three at YAC. Briant
Floetketter got the start when Bleskin was hurt, and he is a
rising star. At 6'2 198, he is a big tartet but he has
deceptive speed, and he has really come on in the 2nd half of
the season. You'll likely see Kruz Siewing as well, who is has
decent size, speed, and great hands. Overall, a good unit but
nobody is going to scare you.

first and only year at T). They are pretty good in pass
protection, but have struggled to generate much of a push when
it comes to the run game. We have a tough time running against
big run-eating DLs. The lone incumbent from last year is
upperclassmen is C Shaun Sampson, an undersized guy at 6 foot
nothing 268. The rest are freshman or converts.

of the game. Perkins is back, and there is a 50/50 chance that
Salonoa might return as well. Salonoa is the most athletic -
think of a poor man's Antonio Gates. Perkins has good hands but
is a bit undersized at 6'2 235. Salonoa is 6'3 255 and the
fastest of the group with the softest hands.

The fastest running back on the team, and quite possibly the
fastest player on the team period. He is just a true sophomore,
and he gets up to 5 touches a game, but is a home run threat
every time he touches it. He is also our punt returner and took
one to the house this year, and is a threat every time he
catches it. Is also a threat to muff or fumble every time he
fields a punt as well, but has gotten much better at that as the
season has gone on. He will be a huge part of the offense next
year with Davis and Robinson both gone, but for now he is 4th in
line, and inexperienced enough to stay on the sidelines for most
of the game, but he will be a special player, and we shall see
how much he is utilized if at all come Saturday.

your starting QB. :D
Anyhoo. Wish is was there to join you guys at the tailgate,
alas, i will not be connecting in Minneapolis and heading to the
"Last Best Place State". ;D
However, since i expect teams like MSU and SBU to be this deep
in the tournament going forward, i suspect we will see each
other again!

It's always difficult to gauge the strength of teams from
different conferences. SBU runs the ball, but MSU is stingy
against the run. SBU is huge up front, but MSU is strong and
fast on D.
Lost in most of the discussion is this: MSU will get the ball
on offense, and when they do, SBU will see the best balanced
attack they've seen all year. It usually takes MSU a series or
two to adjust and get rolling. When they do, they wear down
defenses. If MSU can score, they'll have success, as SBU is not
geared to come from behind.
Two good teams. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? :) :)
It should. It's playoff time, and all these teams are good.
All have had great seasons, and all have pretty much had their
way.
SBU has some beasts running the ball. For what it's worth,
watch Cody Kirk when MSU has the ball. He's not big or fast,
but he follows his blockers, and he has incredible balance.
He's one of those runners that you hit a couple of times, and
then watch him go another 8 yards.
Can't wait, I'll be at the game with my 13 year old son. It's
his first time to Bobcat Stadium, night game, great teams,
playoff football! Good luck SBU....GO CATS! ;) ;)

It is wonderful to see the CAT fans come to this board to talk
some football and be treated with CLASS!! Thanks to all on this
forum for being human beings first and fanatic fans second, very
much appreciated... Will be an awesome game to watch under the
lights, playoff time is so great because you get to see the best
in the nation and chat with their fans.

By the way, you can watch any non-Root Sports covered game on
demand at Bigskytv.org for free, if you are super ancy and wana
check out the Cats. Not much for highlights out there
unfortunately.

Yes Griz, we Stony Brook Fans represent our school, and football
success is just part of that. Displaying some class (haha, and
legible grammar) is another part. When we made it to the
Baseball Super-Regionals this past spring we got SPAMMED by a
bunch of low-life LSU "fans." Our moderator had to ban them.
Fortunately we also encountered some classy LSU fans along the
way, too. Sports shouldn't be more important than common
decency.

Well deserved!!!! WE are so close to having our first Payton
award winner. If Maysonet carries us deep into the Playoff I
have no doubt he will earn it.
He would be the first Running Back to earn it in the past nine
year since all the previous eight winners have all been QB

You guys are kinda chippy aren't ya? Ball control football is
not exciting football no matter what level you play at. It
obviously is if you are a fan of the team. And I'm not saying
it isn't great football. 12 minute drives are a thing of
beauty, but not terribly enthralling to witness.
As for the Cat defense:
Defense:
DL - When healthy, is one of the best in the Big Sky, and I'd
say a top 10 DL in the country. They are fully healthy as of
now. Zach Minter was a pre-season All-American. He is a about
as an athletic of a 300 lb NT as you will find at this level.
He has been hampered by injuries, but is back to full strength.
He is usually double teamed, saw action in only 9 games, but
still had 7 TFL and 3 sacks from his NT position, with an INT.
From the DE spot, Caleb Schreibeis is a very active pass rusher
and run stopper. At 6'3 252 he has 51 tackles, 14.5 TFL, 12
sacks, 7 QBH, and a whopping 7 forced fumbles. At the other end
is Brad Daly (6'1 240) who led the league in sacks last year in
mostly 3rd down situations as a pass rush specialist, but is a
full time starter this year and hasn't quite had the production
he had last year, but still has 4 sacks and 7 TFL. The other DL
spot is usually manned by either Craig Ashworth (6'2 275) a
former walk-on, Brian Bignell (6'2 255) in more pass situations.
They are a good run stopping unit and if they get you into 3rd
and long situations, they will come after you. MSU relies on
its front 4 to get pressure on the QB; we don't blitz often.
LBs - As good as the DL is, this may be the best unit on the
defense. Anchored by somewhat undersized MLB Jody Owens (BSC
Defensive MVP), they are fast, physical, play sideline to
sideline and also play well in pass coverage. They are not the
biggest group - Owens is 6' 223 at MLB, Na'a Moeakiola is 5'11
217, and Cole Moore/Alexsi Grosulak are 6'2 223/5'10 221,
respectively. So no one is greater than 225, but they have
combined for 207 of the teams 671 tackles, 23.5 tackles for
loss. They shoot the gap well and rarely miss a tackle,
especially Owens who is a master at getting into the backfield,
with 11 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. They will be tested
heavily on Saturday.
CB - Has had their ups and downs this season, but for the most
part have played very well. Lead by Darius Jones, they are a
solid coverage unit who can tackle surprisingly well for a
secondary. Jones is the best shut-down corner. Deonte Flowers
has had his struggles one on one, and I wouldn't be surprised to
see SB attack Flowers when they are looking for one vs one
matchups. Flowers has been thrown at a lot this year and had
just 3 pass breakups to show for it, but he has improved in the
latter half of the season (theme for whole defense). MSU is a
team that is tied for first in the conference for interceptions.
At safety is perhaps the most underrated safety combo in the
conference, senior Joel Fuller who was 1st team all conference,
is good in run support. His counterpart is Steven Bethley, his
first year as a true starter, and he is a physical albeit
undersized (height-wise) who also has 3 INTs. The unit as a
whole tackles very well in space and can beat WR blocks.
The Cats play a base 4-3. Their MO is getting you into a 3rd
and long, and having the DL pin their ears back. As a resule,
MSU leads the conference in opponent 3rd down % at around 27%.
The key for the Cats will be keeping SB into 3rd and 7s, 3rd and
8s and forcing them to pass. The DBs will be tested, as they
will be called upon for run support but also not to give up that
one big play in the passing game.
