2012: Stony Brook Post-season talk, Potential brackets, at-large
        discussion

With the Loss at Liberty we are no longer in command of our
playoff hopes. Its up to VMI to beat Liberty or up to the
committee to judge Stony Brook's resume.
That opens up a whole new discussion for the next two week. I
was hoping I didn't have to open up such a thread but I'm left
with no choice. What are the thoughts?
Are we deserving? Is our resume good enough?

After further consideration. I believe we have a first round
home game locked against the NEC winner (Albany/Wagner). That's
my opinion as of now. I believe we have an at-large chance. Our
resume should be taken into consideration.

The odds are slim for an at large bid even at 9-2 . If we do
get a bid expect to see the team on the road, i dont think we
       would host anyone.

Lets look at possible "At-Large" candidates.
Definitely ahead of us: 6 teams
       Old Dominion
Georgia Southern/Wofford/App State (2 of 3, third gets auto)
       Eastern Washington
       Northern Arizona
Sam Houston/Central Arkansas (1 of 2, second gets auto)
Pretty sure they are ahead of us: 4 teams
       Richmond/New Hampshire/Villanova/James Madison (3 of 4, fourth
       gets an auto-bid)
       South Dakota State
Teams that are in the conversation with us: 7 teams
       Lehigh
       Cal Poly
       Towson
       Tenn St
       Eastern Kentucky
       Illinois St
       Indiana St
There may be more teams that I'm not thinking of, but you get
the idea. With only 10 bids available, it's a big uphill climb.
Who gets bounced from the list? One of the CAA squads? They
have name recognition and conference clout. Lets be honest, an
8 win CAA team looks much better than a 9 win Big South club (or
an 8 win Big South club, when you remove the Pace game).

Jag, you make a good point about 8-2 when you back out the win
over Div II Pace. I'm not sure how many of SB's at-large
competitors also have a DII win, but my guess is not many. The
win over Army is a positive, but not a huge positive...they're
near the bottom of FBS teams. If I were a betting man, I'd give
60/40 odds against an at-large at this point.

I would be surprised if they got an at large bid. I mean they
had everything in front for them (Auto Bid, Home Game, possible
bye) and they laid an egg. They will bet zero support from the
Big South for the auto bid since they are leaving the conf.
Also, the Big South as a Conf is average at best. There are 3
good teams and a bunch of terrible teams. Beating up on the
       weak is not that impressive.
If they do get an at large it is because the powers that be want
to see Maysonet play again and I can't see that reason enough.
Of course there are still games to be played next week so well
       see what happens.
I this is the end for the SeaWolves it was a great season that
just hit a bump in the road at the wrong time.
One thing I will not miss about the Big South is their crazy tie
       breaker scenarios.

I think Stony Brook will get an at-large. They'll have wins over
two playoff bound teams in Colgate and Coastal and an FBS win
over Army. Not many teams can say that.

Dana White (of the UFC) used to tell his fighters "don't let it
       go to the judges scorecard".
I think the same thing applies here. The loss yesterday means
waiting and hoping that VMI takes down Liberty. If not, I doubt
we're dancing. Going back to the above list, we got to look at
who gets bounced if we're in. Plus the teams in our pool
(specifically Lehigh) who may jump us too.
Now if this loss happened in Week 2 instead of Week 11, things
would be different, but thats not the case.
Do I feel SBU deserves to be in? Yes. Do I think the committee
       lets them in? No.
People will argue that our quality wins aren't quality. Colgate
lost to 1-9 South Dakota, Coastals only "quality win" is
Liberty, and Army is one of the worst FBS teams in the country.
Truth is, people were looking for a reason to knock SBU down for
quite some time, and we just gave it to them.

If the D-II win doesn't count then why would the BCS loss
against Cuse count at all? the team is just 8-1. not bad at all.
       they should be in

The Big South commish has stated that he feels Stony Brook
should get a bid. Also the other teams have another week to play
so alot can happen. Maybe the committee takes that stupid tie
       breaker into account
