Eagles move on from Maysonet
Posted by Mike Florio on May 19, 2013, 7:32 PM EDT
APRegarded as this year’s possible small-school sleeper, running
back Miguel Maysonet won’t end up being a steal for the Eagles.
We’ve confirmed that the Eagles will waive Maysonet, a standout
at Stony Brook who signed with Philly as an undrafted free
agent.
The move has sparked speculation of a possible disconnect
between coach Chip Kelly and G.M. Howie Roseman, given that it’s
believed Maysonet received a five-figure signing bonus to pick
the Eagles. While arguably premature, there’s even more reason
to keep an eye on how the Kelly-Roseman relationship unfolds.
The move also underscores the importance of offseason workouts.
Despite reduced physicality and intensity under the 2011 CBA,
the things a player does or doesn’t do in the early days of OTAs
can prompt a coach to pull the plug on a player who presumed
he’d at least get a chance to prove himself during training camp
and the preseason.
For Maysonet, if it happens, it’ll happen somewhere else.

Chairman. I could totally agree with that statement even though
I'm a JETS Fan, but i would love to see Miguel get some training
time by the Eagles first then get traded to an another team....
New York team perhaps!! I think he will eventually get his
chance to play for a NFL team , but he needs to keep his cool
and don't do anything stupid..

he's a smart kid...I'm sure his agent will get him in a camp.
Would love to see him on the Jets but really just want him to be
a success in the NFL.

So what happened with Eagles running back Miguel Maysonet in
Philadelphia? Per a source with direct knowledge of the
situation, Maysonet found himself on the wrong side of a numbers
game.
The recent addition of veteran tailback Felix Jones resulted in
Maysonet sliding, in the team’s view, to the sixth spot on the
depth chart. And so the decision was made to move on.
Despite speculation in some circles that the five-figure signing
bonus paid to Maysonet and his abrupt departure after one week
of OTA practices speaks to a disconnect between coaching staff
and front office, keep in mind that undrafted rookies routinely
get sizable signing bonuses — and then routinely get cut.
This year, for example, the Giants gave receiver Marcus Davis a
$15,000 signing bonus, and they already have released him.
The balance of Maysonet’s rookie deal will now be subject to the
waiver system, given that the Eagles officially have released
the former Stony Brook standout, replacing him with undrafted
rookie tight end Will Shaw. The teams to watch will be any
teams the Eagles outbid to get Maysonet, since those teams can
now get him with no signing bonus at all.

Good ESPN article on the Maysonet situation. Hopefully Jets
decide to replace a troubled RB with one that will reflect WELL
on the team.

Chip Kelly will find out real soon how bad Felix "the cat"
Jones is. It's mind boggling how these teams cut a player
without even seeing play a gm or in a real practice.
