No no No. I want Big time College Football in Long Island. It
seems like we, the fans, have completely different views on the
future of SBU. I want Big East/ACC football just like most
public Universities in the US. I'm not specifically saying Ohio
State, Florida, Penn State, Michigan, Texas... etc... More like
the Maryland, Duke, Utah, Colorado, Connecticut, Rutgers,
Syracuse, North Carolina, etc
I want SBU to be big in academics and athletics. lol
I gotta keep dreaming

p.s: College Football keeps getting better and better...and
there is a lot of untapped potential in the Northeast. Uconn
rose to 40k filled stadium in a ten year period. Why can't we?
Stony Brook should be the College Football team of downstate
NY... I'll leave upstate to Army/Syracuse/Buffalo/Albany

The stated goal of our athletics department has been to bring
FBS level football to StonyBrook at some point in time. Whether
sooner or later that would be a direction I would like to see us
go. As for the tweet by John Rothstein that we declined an
invite as an all sports member to the CAA if true I take with
mixed emotion. If our plan as I said is FBS in the 5-7 year
range then maybe that makes sense. If we are looking at 10-12
years or longer then I could not think of a better conference
for us to be in than the CAA . The two conferences we are in
now have become unstable. Liberty and Coastal Carolina both
have openly stated they are looking for new homes. The AE just
lost Boston Univ. with no announced replacement. Who knows who
else my bolt. Plus the CAA is head and shoulders above the AE
any day.
So we will just have to wait see what comes out of all this ,
hopefully in a few weeks.

Hey everyone- my apologies if i havent been paying close enough
attention- but has anyone else in the mentioned leaving? I see
a bit of chatter about UalbanY football- is that all sports?
Anything official on that?
I wouldnt get too upset about BU. I mean they were probably the
best overall athletic program in the AE, but SB (and even UA)
were creeping in!!! GO SB

It looks like Albany will enter the CAA as a football only
member. Nothing official yet from the CAA, but Albany officials
including their coach see Albany in the CAA with us (Full
Member /football only ?). Also Rhode Island that had announced
moving to the NEC will stay in the CAA for football now. Only
question now seems to be is SBU going in as a full or football
only program. Interesting times!

Why would you want to be like rutgers or maryland, uconn etc
they don't play for titles. Just for the record I am not against
a move to the CAA if that is what is going to happen, I'm just
saying that the CAA is not the end all. If it happens it happens
but if we stay were we are we wiil be fine. I want football to
play for 1-AA titles and our other sports to be major players in
Div 1. Downstate NY and LI is a pro town people care about all
the pro sports offered here. I just do not see 1/4 billion
dollars allocated for a new stadium. You can't build it on
campus because there is only one major roadway that accesses the
school. All I am saying is enjoy what we have never had here
before, I do appreciate the passion though.

Competing for what? Competing for I-AA titles against schools
that don't fit our profile? Excuse me... I'll pass on that
The Division I-AA is a failed model. Is not sustainable. Most
teams make no profit at all. Its also proven with Hofstra's case
that Division I-AA is not a popular brand of football in Long
Island. I fear that if we don't move up in the next decade or so
we wont have such a great future.
People in Long Island and Downstate watch College Football, is
just that they won't bother to watch I-AA football in large
numbers. They watch BCS conference football.
There is a significant following of Rutgers/Uconn/Army/Syracuse
fans in the metro area who tune to watch these games on TV...

Football failed at Hofstra because the admin was not behind it
and their stadium if you want to call it one is not fan friendly
( no parking, no tailgaiting). Lavalle is unique because it's on
campus and the student body cares but Long Islanders w/no school
ties are not just going to show up because it's a div 1 program.
You have a huge # of Jet and Giant fans that are going to spend
one day on the weekend going to those games not Stony Brook. The
Div 1aa model is not failed, it works and I would rather win a
1aa title than be a crappy MAC team like Toledo. Army has a fan
base because of the military ties,but talent wise they are 1aa
so I do not get that example. Rutgers and Uconn are those good
programs ? In the early 2000's the alumni wanted Rutgers to drop
to 1aa so they could compete. Uconn football c'mon,Syracuse
really. You should dominate at the level you are at before you
make a jump not jump just because. A national title is a
national title no matter what div or conf you play in. It seems
like some of you want to skip certain steps and go right into
the fire. If you are talking 10-15 yrs and the program has grown
to the point were the next logical step is D1 then fine but
right now be happy w/what you got. The last time I checked there
are no national title banners anywhere at Lavalle stadium I will
take just one. Basketball has yet to make the tourny and
Lacrosse should have made more than they have so lets not
downplay the AE wich we have not exactly dominated.

I'd rather be at the top of the FCS heap (very do-able in the
short- and long-term for SBU) than at the middle or (gasp)
bottom of the FBS heap. I think the students would appreciate a
perpetual winning program too. That's far more likely for SB in
the FCS arena. I wouldn't WANT to battle 30,000 other fans to
drive onto campus (assuming I didn't have to park off campus),
try to find parking, take a crowded shuttle bus, and wait on
line to get into the stadium. A full LaValle at its current
capacity would be great. And one way to fill it is to have a
good conference affiliation (CAA) AND a perpetual winning
program. SB will never be nationally ranked at the FBS level.
They are, and will continue to be ranked, at the FCS level.
That's exciting. AND they will still get national exposure by
playing a couple of FBS opponents (and occasionally knocking one
of them off) every season.

If the gist is crawl before you walk, i agree. They way i see
it, getting the "sexy" names on the schedule will bring in
recruits, but then again, recruiting isnt the issue right now.
Or at least i dont think it is!
Maybe this puts it in perspective- forget about the Big South
performance in Oct/Nov, and the NCAA Tournament. We lost to
Brown. At home. How's that gonna look if we jump to FBS?

The immediate question is are we going to be playing in the CAA
come 2013? That will help with attendance, recruiting and the
CAA is usually a multiple bid conference for the play offs so an
at large bid is always possible. The CAA is considered the top
football conference in FCS and that would be a a good place
for SBU to be.
