Game 23 @ Elon: 1/31 at 12:00PM on FloHoops
By: Oakes Date: January 30, 2026, 7:52 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Elon: 13-9 (5-4 in CAA play)
Notable Non Conference Wins: Wofford, Richmond (and lost to
Virginia Tech by 1!)
Notable CAA Wins: @ Hofstra, vs William and Mary
Notable CAA Losses: vs Charleston, @Northeastern, vs Towson, @
Charleston
Elon is quietly having one of the best seasons since they joined
the CAA. They only finished with a CAA record above .500 once
(in 16-17) since they joined the conference in 2014. They
current sit tied for third in the CAA standings and have
increasingly shown that they are one of the most formidable
offenses this season. They are currently hold the 2nd highest
team PPG this year, behind William & Mary who they just defeated
on Thursday. Elon is also 1st in the CAA in Team FG% and have
committed the 2nd fewest turnovers behind only UNCW, so they
really take care of the ball.
Their entire starting 5 left for the portal this offseason, but
Billy Taylor has done a good job of bringing in talent to
replace them.
Chandler Cuthrell has been the prize for them and, like Goods,
he is a PF who is serving as the team's starting 5. They found
this diamond in the rough on Purdue-Fort Wayne's bench where he
was averaging 7 pts and 6 rb --- and has turned himself into a
arguably the best big man in the CAA this year. Cuthrell
averages a ferocious 21 pts, 7 rb and 2 ast on 29% from deep so
far in 25-26. He trails only Hofstra's Cruz Davis in scoring
this season as he sits 2nd in the CAA in PPG. He cant shoot well
from three like Goods, but has proven to be a terror in the
paint in this conference. I have shades and flashbacks to the
Albany game when I think about Stony Brook lining up with him.
Recently, Cuthrell put up 28 pts vs Northeastern on 12/29, 23
pts vs Hofstra on 1/17 and 20 pts vs Charleston on 1/24. While
hes not a true rim protector-- he has shown to really frustrate
opposing bigs as evidenced by holding both of WMs bigs (Brockoff
and Vahlberg Fasasi) to 7 points each on Thursday. Vahlberg
Fasasi gave our Seawolves 22 pts in December. However, he was
crushed by Reeves vs Charleston who gave him 29 pts and 18 rb
last Saturday. But I dont think anyone in the CAA can truly
guard the ACC raised big man at Charleston.
UNCW's Wessler hit us hard in the 2nd half of that game to
expose SBU's shaky rim protection -- but I think Cuthrell might
be the best big in the conference. I'm not confident Goods and
Oleg are going to be able to contain him in the 1st half in his
own arena like they did with Wessler. But I suspect well be
seeing more Oleg than usual in this game, like we saw vs UNCW,
to try and frustrate him at the rim because I think Geno knows
Oleg's true value is in games with matchups like these.
This is a team who can easily go toe-to-toe with Stony Brook
from the 3PT line. Elon is 3rd in the CAA in 3PT% and 3PT FGM.
They brought in three shooters via the portal who are hovering
around 40% from deep. Fortunately for Stony Brook -- their best
deep threat and PF Kacper Klaczek has missed the past two games
with an apparent injury. He was averaging 12 pts, 6 rb and 3 ast
on a scary 47% from deep so far in 25-26. The Polish import
spent his first three seasons with St Josephs, and spent last
year starting for Albany. But he has really ascended this season
and come into his own. Not to mention -- he is the team's
leading shot blocker. Monitoring his availability is something
to watch for when starting lineups are announced.
Randall Pettus, out of Northern Kentucky, is their highest
scoring guard at 13 PPG, but he is very strong defender too and
appears to be the one who will get the assignment to guard Erik
Pratt. They also brought in sophomore Bryson Stokley from George
Mason's bench who has really been one of the better 6th Men off
the bench this season, but has played more in Klaczek's absence.
He is averaging 12 pts and 4 rb on 40% from three so far in
25-26 and can really score 15-20 pts on any given night.
But despite Pettus' efforts the team's defense as a unit hasn't
really kept pace with the success of their offense so far. They
sit 3rd to last in the CAA in opponents Team PPG at 78PPG. Only
Campbell and Northeastern have proved easier to score on.
Potentially not having Klaczek on the court presents more issues
for them on that side of the ball.
These guys do have the 2nd lowest attendance in the conference
this year, which is nice, behind only Drexel for those who give
that any value.
------------------------------------------------------
Stony Brook: 13-9 (5-4 in CAA Play)
Four wins in a row since the Hofstra game. While Hofstra has
lost 5 games in a row. Stony Brook has really turned it around
and has been moving the ball well on this roadtrip. They have
really been able to absorb 2nd half pushes from guys like Cruz
Davis and DJ Smith and respond with a well balanced attack on
offense. The offense has looked really smooth lately and you mix
that in with a healthy diet of offensive and defensive
contributions from Jonah Butler, Ethan Simmon and Tomas
Valentiny. This team is really getting comfortable together and
so the ball movement has been great and they are generating a
ton of good 3PT looks. All while Pratt keeps every team honest
at the rim.
While road wins over over Northeastern and Campbell are good
signs-- a team like Elon is going to be harder to contain. Can
Goods continue his strong play @Elon opposite a guy like
Cuthrell? He certainly played really strong against a lot of his
friends and family in the win at Campbell on Thursday when he
had 11 of his 15pts in the 2nd half to counterbalance a DJ
Smith-fueled 2nd half push by Campbell. This game vs Elon is
also not far from his hometown of Greensboro, so I wouldnt be
surprised to see him get an extra boost again put up a strong
effort vs Cuthrell with them in the stands. But this matchup
will be a battle.
Pratt continues to insert himself into the CAA Player of the
Year conversation with his strong play. He has been going for
20+ every night lately and has also been playing strong defense
at times which maybe I havent given him enough credit for
earlier in the year. Who finishes this game with the most points
between he and Cuthrell should be an interesting thing to gauge
in this one. But the battle between he and Pettus is going to be
a good test for Pratt.
Andrej Shoshkikj is continuing to have less and less bad nights.
He scored 12 of his 19 points in the 2nd half to lead Stony
Brook to another win. I expect him to go for 14-15+per night at
this point as one of the best freshman guards in the CAA. That
overseas experience vs pros has really shown lately with the
kind of perseverance he has played with. He has gotten better
and better as the season goes on.
Jonah Butler's hands have been so active in so many of our
opposing team's passes lately. He has shown great court vision
and has had a knack for knowing how to be in the right spot of
the court at the right time. Sometimes we forget just how strong
and tall he is, but he is 6'6", 210 lbs. Butler showed it with 8
huge rebounds to pair with 10 pts. But is quickly becoming a fan
favorite according to the many different people I talk to in the
community. When he and/or Simmon get hot off the bench in a
game-- that's a good sign of things to come in any given game.
----------------------------------------
This will be Stony Brook's toughest test on the road so far in
conference play besides maybe the William & Mary game. Can these
red hot Seawolves flip the board in the CAA even further with a
5th win in the row vs a strong CAA team before heading home for
an easier two game home stretch vs Monmouth and Northeastern?
The Pratt/Cuthrell point side contest should be fun to monitor
--- but seeing which of these teams is able to connect on more
threes might be the real race. Lets see if Goods and Andrej can
continue to help Pratt in this game vs Elon because they have
proven to be a powerful three-pronged offense when they are all
on.
This should be a much tighter battle than we have seen the last
few games.
Go Seawolves.

elon looks pretty good but we pulled away, mostly on good ball
movement and defense. cant complain about a 12 point lead going
into half.
the good news is with pratt getting limited time (that being
only 13 of 20 minutes), we still can work the ball and score.
gorman had a nice little run there on both ends. with him and
goods have 2 PFs each, expect more koj.

Elon’s HC calling Stony Brook
“The best 3PT shooting team in the conference” has a nice ring
to it.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again— this is the most well
rounded offense I’ve ever seen from this program.
And to be playing this well without Pratt leading the way is
very refreshing.
Sweeping a road trip is something we haven’t seen often from
this program. I like our odds in the 2nd half.

Not a good 2nd half at all. We stopped hitting threes and Pratt
can’t catch a break.
Pratt needs to just facilitate from here on out.

What a call reversal on the Gorman play. I didn’t think it was a
flagrant but thought it was possible to go that way. Instead, we
shoot FTs! Huge.

Just recently we were all complaining on this forum about the
disgusiting loss against drexel. Just a month later we are on a
5 win streak and 3-rd in the CAA. Lets go Seawolves!
