Game 16: vs NC A&T / 1/3 @ 4:00 PM
By: Oakes Date: January 2, 2026, 10:30 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hey Everyone— I’m not Checkmate. I can never be Checkmate. I
want to thank Checkmate for giving us all so much insight in his
game previews over the years on here— and I hope everything
works out for him, as I can’t wait to see his previews again
soon.
I love this program and have been invested in this team since I
was covering the team for the Statesman 10 years ago. Good or
bad, I’m cursed. I will always be watching.
I have strong context of the CAA, the America East days and the
recent MAAC (this one through a family connection that keeps me
glued to Quinnipiac as well). I love my context and statistics.
I also attend most home games in recent years and even more so
now that I have become a Smithtown resident who is just a 20
minute ride from campus after living in Nassau County.
I’ve been writing these pre game posts in our little Stony
Brook Twitter groups a lot this season to evaluate the opponent
and bring up some hot topics— and I’ve been enticed to start
sharing them here. So here we go…
———————————————————
How I see tomorrows game vs NC AT (7-6, 0-2 in CAA)
— losses in CAA to Northeastern and UNCW. Both teams shot over
40% from deep vs NC AT
— no non conference wins of note to report.
— the team returns no starting players— brand new starting 5.
— Lewis Walker, Forward, is the man on this team. Think of him
as a poor man’s Amarii Monroe (Quinnipiac)— bully ball, good at
attacking the rim— but lacks a three point shot despite chucking
a lot of them. But he’s not nearly as strong on D as Amarii.
— Their PG Trent Middleton is the most recognizable transfer in
their starting 5. You may remember him coming off of Delaware’s
bench with a decent role. He’s nothing too special, but he’s
certainly an advantage for them over Stonys PG non existent
situation.
— I worry their big Weluche Ume (from George Washington’s bench)
has the opportunity to surprise us with his physicality in a
similar way Albany took advantage of us. Not sure Goods and Oleg
will matchup well with him. — I hope Stony is prepared
—————————————-
Stony Brook
— This isn’t a defense that is something to write home about— so
I think this is a game where some guys like Goods, Andrej, Brown
or others have the potential to step up to help Pratt out and
get a win here. Who is it gonna be?
— Goods season high 14 rebounds (4 offensive) last game vs WM
was one of the only positive takeaways of that game. Stony
really needs him to continue to crash the boards. Hope he can
find ways to get more involved on offense
— Valentiny has been playing really crumby lately on offense.
Hes 2/14 thru the last three games and Stony could really use
some of those timely shots he hit earlier in the season.
— I have been personally very critical of a severe lack of ball
movement from this team and get very nervous when Pratt is
forced to run point late in games. It’s not his role.
— This is where Andrej must step up and get involved early,
because you’re not gonna get that from Toby. We need to see the
Andrej we saw vs LMU, CMU and Brown. It’s in him— but he has to
get going early. Stony needs his production BAD. — He is 4/20 FG
and 0/6 from three in his last 4 games since dropping 21 on
Central Michigan. This cannot go on…
— Brown looked great in the first half vs WMU, he even passed a
little. But then got lost in the 2nd half. Let’s hope Geno can
find more ways to get him open looks.
— Quinn Gorman has played 20+ min in each of the last few games
after not hitting that mark once in any game before that. Hes
has shown flashes on defense. But if he’s gonna play these
minutes he’s gotta hit more threes. He is capable, but will he?
————————————-
Conclusion
This is a winnable game. But one or two guys need to step up
here and help Pratt. Stating the obvious of course. How Andrej
and Goods perform in the 1st half here will be telling.
We can’t wait until O’Connor “might” come back. We can’t be
opening conference play 0-3– especially when the next four games
are vs Drexel, UNCW, Hofstra and Charleston.
Time to get back on track and show some life.
Go Seawolves.

The forum lives on! Great preview Oakes. This feels like a must
win if we want this season to be interesting at all given the
upcoming schedule.

love pav and johnny. johnny on Debrick- "for somebody that
shoots well, that's a tough name"
shosh is 4/4 from behind the arc. i actually think A&T looks
pretty good and well rounded for an 0-2 team on the road.

getting crushed on the boards, 39-24. yet still ahead with a
few minutes left, as the lead dwindled from 16 to just 2 over
the 2nd half.

wow, what a night for shosh. not only shooting the lights out
(9/10, but also 4/4 FTs), but he got a block (i think?) at the
very end in a 1 point game.
also- TWENTY assists tonight. and only 8 turnies. that's a
good recipe for success. GO SB

Good win. The players deserved to celebrate on their home
court. Glass half full- if all the underclassmen return (I
know), I could see a big improvement going into next year.

Lucky win, after blowing that 15-point lead. Ball movement was
poor in 2nd half, and they just crushed us on the boards.
Andrew’s near perfect game was the difference. Pratt is clearly
best player on team, but he can’t put it all on his shoulders
down the stretch.
