All-time series: Stony Brook 34, Albany 34. We've had their
number of late, winning eight of the last 11 dating back to
2018. But so many hard-fought games in our history. Jamar
Wilson. Tim Ambrose. Mike Black. Peter Hooley. Joe Cremo. The
Iatis. The Rowleys. Many many more villains in there too.
The line often mirrors what you see on KenPom, and if that
happens here, I think it's outrageous. I'm not sure what Albany
has done to justify this one being close. It's certainly not
their wins over ::checks notes:: SUNY Delhi, Paul Smith's
College (located in Paul Smiths, NY ???), and SUNY Oneonta –
their only three of the season. It's not their shooting –
they're around 41 percent in their D-I games, including under 28
percent from three. And it's not their five losses by 20 points
or more, and a sixth by 19 ... although I suppose all but one of
those losses came to a team inside the top 200. They've taken on
a tough schedule, and played a few of them tough. I guess that's
       it.
Maybe we can't afford to be smug, or have no right to be smug,
not after last year or some of the other lean years. Yes, we
went up in conference competition and they didn't, and no, we
couldn't have looked better than we did a few days ago (minus
the turnovers). It's a rivalry game, and Albany has to view this
as an opportunity to halt their road skid at eight dating back
to last year, even though we're in an arena where we've won
eight straight ourselves – tied for the seventh best such
       stretch in our D-I history.
It's great to see Pratt gets his flowers this week, earning our
first conference player of the week nod since Anthony Roberts in
February 2022. It used to be a regular thing, but of course
we've fallen back a bit, and it's a lot more difficult to be
recognized in the better, larger CAA. We got nine such
selections in 2014-15, seven in our tournament year, and there
was actually a span during the non-conference schedule in
2018-19 that we won it four straight weeks – Yeboah, Yeboah,
Garcia and Yeboah. And Garcia won it a few weeks after that. But
it's been over three years since the last one, so it's good to
       end that drought.
He'll be another tough draw for the opposition, which will play
three guys 6-3 or under for long stretches. Watching them play
reminds me a lot of what we used to see with us – a lot of
dribbling, isolation, bad shots. Kempson's coming off a 30-point
game against FAU, and Lindsey's a little dynamo who's had some
big nights for them. It's their activity defensively that
concerns me a little. I could see them being disruptive, even if
turnovers haven't been drastically in their favor to this point.
We certainly have struggled with them, more as the tempo
increased than in the halfcourt. I could see this one being
       sloppy.
It's pretty neat that, with O'Connor, we go a legit 10 deep,
with Simmon being our 11th. Butler looked great against CMU. He
was looking for his shot, and I'm all for it. He gives me
Grayson Allen vibes. And as I've said before, if any of these
guys get an open look from three, I'm content with whatever the
result. Gorman's enough of a threat. TO too. Everybody is. It's
nice. And nobody's really forcing anything.
If you split it up – backcourt and frontcourt – I'll take both
of our units against theirs, and again, we have the best player
on the floor. And thus I like our chances quite a bit.

I hope UA comes out looking to create absolute chaos from the
start on defense, as I'd like to see SBU work to settle down,
stay away from those corner traps in the backcourt, and
confidently get the ball up the floor with time left on the shot
clock. CMU broadly failed at pretty much everything they tried
to do last game, except somewhat regularly and effectively
burning time off the SBU shot clock with a FC press to create
       some violations/turnovers.

The question becomes will O'Connor come back this season, or
take a RedShirt, for which he is eligible? Inside rumors say
he's out for the year, but TV guys and Geno publicly saying he's
out until sometime in Jan. I did look at his body language on
the bench, and he seemed really to be into it last game. If
he's able, I think he wants to be part of this team. If we were
3-8, the Redshirt would be a given.

I did not realize how terrible Albany was this year. Zero D1
wins! The America East in general looks like a nightmare,
Binghamton is 358/363 in KenPom, NJIT is 353, Maine is 340, UNH
       is 335, Albany 320, Bryant 306 and UMass Lowell 301. UMBC 287,
and then Vermont as always on top at 196, even we're above them
this year! Say what you will about the CAA being an unstable
giant conference, but we got out at the right time.

Its' years like these that I'm so glad to belong to the CAA.
Finally, at last, the CAA is showing its value. For a good chunk
of years the CAA was down to the point that it was comparable in
quality to the America East which was making our jump look
       silly.
But this year, so far, the CAA is 62-57 (12 out of 31) against
other D-1 Competition while the AEC is 19-71 (30 out of 31).
OUCH! The CAA is having a better year than the MAC also.

I was going to say that anytime I feel especially confident
about a result, it goes in the other direction. Brutal.

Great start out of the second half to quickly cut the lead down
to 5... and then it's back up to 13 by the first media timeout.
       Wonderful.
It's been a rough game for our bigs in general, they're getting
overpowered easily on defense and have blown quite a few layups.

terrible loss for the team and the league

That was absolutely horrible. Undefeated at home, going against
a 'winless' team that's shown zero life all year, and this
happens? We're not the ones winning by 16??? It was mostly
non-competitive. Got the first 8 points of both halves and
looked like trash for the entire rest of the game. Had several
chances to make it a 1-possession game and never got it closer
       than 5 points.
This has to be even worse than that Wagner loss from 2021, which
is the game I can most recently compare this to. Yuck.
