       Erratic writing incoming ...
Geez, I had no idea that Columbia fell off the cliff last year –
after kicking our butt pretty much – and that ultimately led to
Engles getting shown the door. They started 11-1, including a
10-point win at Villanova, and then proceeded to go 1-14 in the
new year. That is some meltdown.
So they went ahead and brought in Kevin Hovde, a former
assistant who made his way around the country before returning
to Columbia. It included a four-year stint at Florida that
wrapped up with a national title. Pretty good. And now, in his
debut as a head coach, using what he calls "Nerdball", he has
the Lions nerding out it seems.
So much of a coach's job is getting his guys to buy in, getting
his guys to compete. I'll give it to Geno; we've always
competed, no matter who was on our roster. There's something to
say for that. You look at Columbia, and you see that they had
almost no interest in defending a year ago – in conference,
opponents shot almost 52 percent from the field. Early on, their
opponents are under 40 percent from the field – and under 30
from three – while Columbia's close to the selection 50/40/90
club (OK, just the 50/40 part).
       Stats of note:
Opponents' three-point shooting in our three losses: 29 for 59
       (.492)
Opponents' three-point shooting in our six wins: 33 for 120
       (.275)
And then there's rebounding. Wouldn't you know it that, in the
whole country, the only team who ranks ahead of the team Hovde
left (Florida) in rebound margin is the one he's coaching now.
That's right – Columbia is tops in America at +14.8 in rebound
margin. That includes a 46-26 advantage in their most recent win
over Albany. UA did hang in there for a half, trailing by only
two, using pressure to turn turnovers into points on the other
end. However, while they went cold, Columbia heated up, namely
O'Keefe, who hit six of nine threes. He doesn't look like much
getting off the bus, but he can create for himself and obviously
       can shoot it.
An aside: Let's give it up for Hofstra, which, after losing to
Columbia mid-week, went into Pitt and won yesterday. Imagine
you're a Pitt Panther fan and, in the span of two weeks, you
witnessed a win over Ohio State sandwiched between losses to
Hofstra and Quinnipiac. Banner win for the Pride. Arguably the
       league's best this year.
Columbia has a lot of guys, with no one averaging more than 30
minutes per game. And this is with Avery Brown, their leading
scorer from last year, sitting out most of the season after
fracturing his face in their game against UConn. AND they're
without Zine Eddine Bedri, another big in their arsenal, who has
been out with a foot injury after averaging 13 and 8 to start
the year. So they'll come back, and all the while, the projected
reserves will have played major minutes. One of the guys who's
really emerged is the kid Franklin, who looks more like a junior
than a freshman. He's had some big games already, including an
18-point night against Fairfield, and a big 14 and 6 effort to
beat Hofstra. They've also found a solid reserve in Hampton
Sanders (tough hair; worse than Flagg's), who started one game
in two years at D-III NYU (last year's national runner-up) but
shot the heck out of it and was presumably steady with the ball,
and now he plays real minutes for Columbia. And no mention of
Noland yet, so I should. He's good.
The rebounding is interesting. Part of it is if you knock down
10 percent more of your shots than you give up, that's more
defensive rebounding opportunities. They're +11 on defensive
rebounds alone (with a couple cupcakes mixed in of course). We
have to be respectable here, and another step forward for Goods
would be enormous. Defensively, I do wonder if this is another
big Pratt game. I guess they throw Franklin at him.
And at 9-1 against a relatively soft schedule, they seem like
they're punching above their weight. After all, they were picked
to finish dead last in the Ivy League, earning nearly half the
votes of the seventh place team. Yet here they are. We can
relate a bit, exceeding expectations. It'll be a good matchup.
       Looking forward to it.

Grrrrreat start. Holding Columbia to 8 points in the first 12
minutes is the stuff of dreams.
O'Connor out until January, per the broadcast.

Close to a perfect first half from us. They left a lot of points
on the board though – a lot of open looks that just didn't go
       down.
I love that, no matter what five we have out there, we have five
guys who are looking for their shot. Even Kojenets. That has not
been the case in years past.

what an epic collapse late. SMH.
15 pt lead and then completely cooled off with less than 3
       minutes of regulation.
really doubt we can pull this off in OT

You're up by SIXTEEN with 3 minutes left. Genuinely, a comedy of
errors. How many backcourt turnovers?? How many missed free
throws? Brown taking a terrible 3 when you're up by double
digits and should just bleed as much clock as possible. Goods
       fouling a 100% FT shooter on a 3???

Ok. Lets see if we can pull this off after that debacle
71-68 with 35 seconds left. C'mon boys we can do this!
