A fun one. A real opportunity. In the last two weeks, we've gone
into a couple teams' gyms, far away from the friendly confines,
and won. The 6-2 start is our best opening since Boals led us to
an 8-1 mark in the 2018-19 season.
It's an interesting one for us as we'll need to put the ball in
the basket, as that's Duquesne's forte. They've scored 77 or
more points in all eight games this season, and are averaging 87
a night as a team, just outside the top 50 nationally. That was
surprising to me. I know scoring's up in the NBA, but Georgia's
really out here averaging 99.9 points a game? There are 30 teams
casually dropping in 90 points like it's nothing? I know the
D-III cupcakes are padding those stats in the early going, and
maybe it's always like this, but in the last 10 years, only five
       teams have averaged 90 for a season – 2023-24 and 2024-25
Alabama, 2020-21 Gonzaga, 2016-17 The Citadel and 2016-17 UCLA,
and you have to round up for those last two. I'm sure it
       changes. It was just surprising.
We'll be making a bid to make it a CAA sweep of the Dukes in
2025-26. Northeastern knocked off Duquesne on a neutral floor a
couple weeks ago, and on Tuesday, it was William & Mary who
earned the W. This is a Dukes team that was picked to finish in
the middle of the pack in the A-10, which has roared out of the
gate as a league. It would be a good one for us, and would mark
our first win over an A-10 team since we knocked off GW and URI
in the aforementioned Boals season. Honestly, I'm not sure we've
beaten an A-10 team ever, besides those two. Of course, we
haven't had that many opportunities either.
Duquesne would fare a lot better if they would just take care of
the ball. They've had at least 16 turnovers in all but one game
this season, and maxed out with 21 in their loss to W&M.
Northeastern forced 19 in their win. You watch them and some of
their decision making is just so questionable. Like what are you
doing/thinking? And we've done a nice job making other teams
work, so I foresee another 15+ turnover game here. Meanwhile,
we've been pretty steady, with just over 10 turnovers a game.
Does anyone know if O'Connor is cleared for this one after
       exiting against LMU?
Individually for Duquesne, Guinyard gives Morant vibes as a
smaller guard who can get into the paint with ease, and he does
a nice job of finding shooters. Even at almost 19 a night, he
isn't this killer. I also like the kid Necas, who's this
European kid who can handle the ball in the open floor but also
gets into it underneath. He's earned his minutes. I like this
guy David Dixon too. He's played in over 100 games at Duquesne,
and is like a Bobby Portis – big, physical, competitive,
       possibly stable, possibly not.
Let's do an alumni checkup ...
       • Ra'Sean Frederick: Averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds in his
second year with Division II West Alabama, which is off to a 4-1
       start.
       • Jared Frey: Averaging 7 points a night for UMass Lowell,
unfortunately on just 28 percent shooting from three. He is 24
for 24 from the FT line.
       • Peyton Frey: Averaging 14 points and 7 boards for the Battling
Bishops of Division III Ohio Wesleyan. Dropped in a career-high
       23 and 10 on November 19.
       • CJ Luster: Has not appeared in a game for UNCW due to injury.
       • Rocco Muratori: On the roster but has not appeared in a game
for Indiana Wesleyan (NAIA). He took a medical redshirt at IWU
last year; not sure if it's the same issue this year.
       • Jeremiah Nyarko: Appeared in 3 games for Sacramento State. Not
       much else to report.
       • Kaiden Space: On the roster but has not appeared in a game for
       Division II Winona State.
       • Nick Woodard: Averaging 7 and 4 for Alcorn State out of the
SWAC. The Hornets have faced a murderer's row of teams,
including Florida State, LSU, Minnesota, Maryland, Oklahoma and
Iowa State, which beat them 132-68 on Wednesday. Next up: Baylor
and then Ole Miss. But they beat Indiana State, wow, that's
actually pretty good! Anyway ... Woodard had a team-high 16 in
their opener with the Noles. He's hit 10 of 26 threes, a good
       clip for him.
That's a wrap for now. Let's get one of these next two to
further build up this non-conference resume.

       A game worth watching!
Not sure if it's countable, since it was post-season, but we
beat U Mass badly in the NIT in one of the Warney years...I
think it was 2014 since I was still in medical school at the
       time.

Checkmate, awesome update on the SBU transfer-ees. On a bad
note, strong credible rumor that Colin may be done for the year.
Will Andrej or Pratt assume the PG role? This may give some
important PT to Toby moving forward.

hung in until the end. every time we pulled within 5-7,
Duquesne put some distance between us. a little bit of foul
       trouble (again).
with 13min left ih the game, koj turned it up. layups, runners,
boards. one rimmed out but the point is he backed his man in,
using the size advantage, and turned and shot from 3'. this is
       good, against a good team.
what a day for Goods, both on the boards and behind the arc.

Only watched the second half but I liked what I saw. Refs gave
the game away on the nonsense foul against Brown on the 3 with
under a minute to go. Liked the hustle, smart ball movement,
hanging around with an A10 team. When Brown is on we can
compete with most schools. They are going to continue to
struggle against mobile big men, this time it was Hugley. They
will lose a few games for this reason alone.
Stony Brook has a good team. I like it.

One of those games where we couldn’t quite get over the hump. It
was really frustrating. We were right there! But nope. It’s too
bad. We really stayed on their tail. The difference in our
offense from last year to this year is undeniable. I don’t even
care if the shots go in; I just hate the lack of movement and
creativity and poor shot selection that we’d grown accustomed
       to. Much better this year.
Another prolific night from deep for the opponent, and a lot of
them were open looks. They didn’t do us any favors. We had to
pay extra attention to their bigs, and that freed others up.
       Williams was a nuisance.
Good showing from TO. I like the scoring element he brings to
the table. We’ll have to keep an eye on whether it’s him or
Shoshkikj moving forward. Big minute disparity.
19, 6 and 6 for Pratt. I wonder when the last time was we had
somebody with those numbers. He’s really really good.
38 big minutes from Brown. His shot has been really hit or miss,
but he was competing defensively and still a threat with the
       ball.
It’ll be good to get home.

yep. ball movement is getting better over the last few years.
i think we had 14 assists (?). sometimes we used to average
       half that.
and i also agree with dave's observation- trouble against
*mobile bigs, good call. fortunately most of the teams we play
are limited in that space, hopefully. checkie will tell us
       before gameday of course.
*(it's why i keep saying we should go get as many as we can!)

That foul call on the end was horrible, played great D for a
whole possession and forced them into a horrible shot. Goods
pulled his hands back before any contactw as made. We would have
gotten the ball back with the chance to make it a 1-possession
       game.
