The first real test. And it'll be a stiff one.
It's a veteran group, and not only that, they've been together
for a while, one of the major boosts that these Ivies get.
They're almost immune to the transfer portal craze that plagues
nearly everyone else in the NCAA. Townsend, Mullin, Aletan and
Casey Simmons all pitched in off the bench in 2023-24, and Devon
Arlington was there too. Townsend and Arlington were reserves in
2022-23. While all these other programs are doing icebreaker
exercises, these guys have run up and down the floor in
practice, in games and in the NCAA Tournament. Imagine that
       advantage.
Guys do graduate, so Yale is adjusting to life without John
Poulakidas (G League Clippers) and Bez Mbeng (G League Heat),
who keyed two NCAA tournament berths and a win over
fourth-seeded Auburn in 2024. But they're doing fine. They have
really gotten a bump from Fox, who was an elite scorer in high
school (6th all time in CT). He played sparingly as a freshman
but has doubled his time as a sophomore and barely missed,
hitting seven of nine threes in the early going.
Bottom line: these guys can really really shoot it. They rained
threes all over Navy and Quinnipiac, putting up 97 points in
back to back games. And while they're lower division teams, they
were both the preseason favorites in their conference, and Yale
destroyed them both. It's a small sample size, but 22 for 44,
led by Fox, is eye-popping. They're third in the country in
three-point field goal percentage, and oh by the way, 10th in
       defending the three.
We have to close out on threes and go over the top of screens.
Otherwise, we'll just be another victim. Yale can really space
the floor with shooters, but it's not just that. Simmons has
serious blow-by ability and has seemingly limitless energy. I
like Arlington and Jordan Brathwaite as secondary guys too.
Townsend is so versatile and workmanlike, not unlike his
brother, who played for Yale in the mid 2010s and ended up as a
Rhodes Scholar too. Against Quinnipiac, Nick was backing guys
down from 18 feet out and either doing it himself or finding the
open man on the weak side. And don't leave him open either.
There's a lot to like about this team, and I'd be stunned if
they weren't 10-0 heading to Alabama at the end of December.
A result from tonight to make us feel a little better maybe:
North Carolina A&T 89, some place called Washington Adventist
       83. It happens I guess.
You just have to rebound, and we've done that with two results
we can be proud of – a solid defense of our home court and a
one-sided win against an inferior opponent. Against Yale, and
all year, I really think we have to rebound. That's the biggest
question mark I have at this point – can we get by with Goods,
Gorman, Valentiny and a little bit of Kojenets? It feels just a
little bit light. To be even with Farmingdale State is just
dumbfounding. Maine was too close. And now, for the first time
       this year, we'll face a real Division I lineup. They're +8 per
game on the glass. There isn't really a glaring weakness, and
barring anything unforeseen, this will be our toughest game, at
least per KenPom, the whole season.
YET ... it's also a great opportunity. The
Greene/Roberts/Jenkins team went in and beat Yale at their place
in 2021. I wouldn't say our team, or Yale's, is that much
different. Do I think it will happen? I do not. I think the
shooting continues and their experience, in general and
together, will be obvious. Let's see if we can make them squirm
       a little though.

from the little ive seen so far- im optimistic on Goods on the
boards, athleticism, physicality, etc. Gorman surprised me a
bit too in the paint, which means he did a good offseason
       transformation.
but that's only 2 of many. i still think YU takes it. GO SB

Only hope for tomorrow is that Yale sees a big regression to the
mean from the 3 pt line on both sides of the ball. Outside of
that happening, I'm looking forward to seeing how our new cast
looks vs top tier team. Can Pratt still score at will? Which RB3
do we get? Can Butler, Andrej and Valentiny provide meaningful
minutes off the bench? Should be a good one! Also noticed were
playing @Villanova for football at the same time. Pretty nice
sports day against two top notch schools. Good to be in both of
their company. Easy to forget when were playing D3s that more
often than not were playing really top notch universities as a
       result of CAA/D1.

Wow. We opened as 18.5 point dogs, and it’s all the way up to
       21.5 in some places.

Just took a quick look at the stats on my phone and have to
think that was a pretty solid first half for SBU.
PS, if O'Connor, Brown, and/or Goods gets going a little bit
more in the second half, who knows?

Maybe it’s just because I have low expectations and I’m not sure
how good Yale is, but it felt like an encouraging effort. Some
decent depth and more scoring options than we’re used to.

Although we may have lost, I think this team is pretty legit.

       An encouraging result.
Shooting solves a lot. A credit to the guys for knocking down
shots. There were times last year when it felt like we didn’t
have any shooting on the floor, certainly not without Luster. As
I said before, we may not have a Luster, but we have a good
number of guys who can help spread the floor.
A high major kid like Pratt is such a difference maker. He can
score on all three levels, and when in doubt, you can just tell
him to go create something for himself. A rare combination of
       size, skill and athleticism here.
This certainly has to change our outlook for the next month of
       action.

I wonder if any CAA team can beat Yale? SBU might be okay.
What a difference at the FT line in this game.

I was at to the game. Kudos to Stony Brook for an encouraging
effort against a bigger, stronger Yale team. Nick Townsend is a
very good player and they really struggled with him. Big, strong
forwards will be a challenge to guard all season.
Good athletic performance by SB. This is the Eric Pratt show
now, which is fine, give the ball to your best player. But maybe
a little too much iso. Pratt picked up two quick fouls and had
to come off for a few minutes and I felt like ball movement may
have improved during that time. Also there were like 3 or 4 shot
       clock violations, cant have that.
Size is going to be an ongoing issue, there will be many games
where they will have to live or die by the three, and basically
have to be perfect rebounding, and they gave up a couple of
offensive rebounds that should never have happened. Kojenets
needs to be more aggressive using his size to muscle those
       boards. Good effort though.
Geno Ford is animated, always teaching and communicating
       throughout the game.
Brown seems streaky, if he can get going as a 1-2 guard punch
with Pratt, this team has the depth and talent to be competitive
in the CAA. Really like Butler and Valentiny off the bench. This
felt like a winnable game, honestly I thought Yale was going to
       be better.
Biggest pops- Mullin draining an open three (his first after
being 0-4) after SB cut it to 4 with 2 minutes left. That was
the dagger. Also, the Yale Club Jump Rope team who put on a
ridiculously cool halftime show. I had no idea that was a thing.
       Dave
