Yeah, it was Farmingdale State and it was Maine. But we haven't
been 2-0 since the 2018-19 season – Boals' last year – when we
magically started the year by going to GW and South Carolina and
winning. I mean, that is just wild right now, and add to that
that the non-conference season also included double-digit wins
at Rhode Island and Northern Iowa. We got our KenPom all the way
up to 145 early on in the AE slate. I can't imagine we've been
near that since. But ... consider that, in the last 25 years, in
the years we've started 2-0 (4 times), we've never finished with
fewer than 22 wins. Let's gooooo.
But wait there's more. In that span, we've gone on to 3-0 on
three of those occasions ... but never 4-0! So for that Yale
game, we'll likely be on the precipice of history!
We'll take any modicum of optimism.
The win over Maine was unmistakably a good one – not perfect,
but you saw a nucleus developing. You saw a backcourt that was
dynamic, and potentially something really special with Pratt,
who showed he could knock down the open shot or get into the
paint, and was clearly comfortable finishing with his off hand.
And who, at or around 6-5/185, have we had in the past who could
do that? I come back to Roberts, who certainly wasn't shy
offensively. They had him listed at 6-4/200. Anyway, it was at
the very least a great performance, and perhaps a sign of things
to come. I also like our depth. We can bring in TO, a veteran
guard, off the bench for a time. Same with Sammon. Shoshkikj,
while he battled foul trouble after the scintillating opener,
will be a good piece if not more. I think Kojenets could be
stretched out to 14-18 minutes for us. He's not bad around the
       rim.
I'm curious how it all looks against superior opponents or in
conference. Maine felt a little slow and small, and we took
advantage at +6 on the glass and +4 in paint points. For
starters, you know Yale's going to be well prepared under James
Jones, and they opened their season by demolishing an excellent
Navy side, which was predicted to handily win the Patriot
League. And then we'll see after that. But it was good to see us
rebound from the Farmingdale State nailbiter with a convincing
win. There's a glimmer of hope here.
I don't have a lot on St. Joe's to be honest, but they're
playing in Wayne, NJ, tonight at 7:30, presumably get home at
midnight, and are back on the court for this one at 6:30. Edit:
       They lost by 13.

Do we really need to keep scheduling these Division III games?
Is it so hard to get other Division I schools to visit?

Is this supposed to build confidence for this team? Just go D2
or D3 at “Stony Brook arena”. We can’t even get a sponsor for
the naming rights to the arena anymore. What is this AD doing?
I think he expected a new job opportunity to arise by this point
so he could jump ship like many of the student athletes that
figure out Stony Brook has no student morale and a [edited]
       campus social life.

We are 3-0 currently and still have negative things to say about
the team. Why? I believe every single CAA team scheduled game vs
non D1 teams. Hofstra schedule Molloy and Old Westbury, and they
don’t play old westbury until December 10th. At least our non D1
games are done. Even though reading the negativity is not what I
wanted to do after a win, the athletic dept has to do better
with getting students to the game. With over 26,000 students, we
cant find 200-300 students with an interest in basketball?
Erik Pratt and Rob Brown are really good. If both are on the
court, I think it gives us a shot to win every single game. It
was nice to see Jonah get going last night. Wonder if we can see
him play some minutes in future games, seems like he can really
shoot. We have a really deep bench which is something good to
have, especially in March with the CAA tournament.

I don't know if almost losing to Farmingdale is what a lit a
fire under our butts, or if having Pratt is really that much of
a difference. Still, I'll be honest about not expecting a 107-43
       win for better or worse.

Didn't watch this one. But I agree with NYR here. While I don't
understand/like the scheduling and don't take much stock in the
result, we're really no different than most teams at our level.
They're all playing sub D-Is. The Farmingdale State result was,
of course, alarming but we bounced back with a solid home win
and the kind of pummeling we should expect going against a
D-III. For what it's worth, it's our biggest margin of victory
since the 2015-16 team beat USMMA by 71. Again, for what it's
       worth.
And I agree even more so on the student section. It really is a
shame. Sports just aren't a priority for students on campus.
The season starts now, with road/neutral games against three
teams that are currently undefeated, but they're at least in the
realm of winnable (not a 30-point massacre against a power
conference school). It would be nice to show that we didn't just
beat up on some patsies here to pad our record. I'm leery of a
couple things, but for now, this has felt more like a team than
a collection of players. Guys have roles, we play hard and we're
       pretty balanced.

Great game. Jonah Butler is really interesting. Looks like the
kind of guy that Vermont would find and kill us for 4 years back
in the AE days. Hope to see more of him in the coming games.
Re: student turnout. As someone who used to be one of those
2-300 students who enjoyed college basketball on campus. Yes
they are out there, the problem is 90%-ish of the on campus
residents grew up watching Anime and not college basketball. And
of the 2-300 (maybe its 500 who knows) that arent in that
category, they arent all connected, meaning, you might be in a
suite of 6 guys and they all play video games and watch anime so
you have no one to go to the game with. Stony Brook would
certainly benefit from a non-marching band student fan group
where those type of people could meet each other and could feel
comfortable going to the games knowing other people like them
that they know are going. Theres another batch of students (the
illusive commuters) that watch college sports at a much higher
rate from my experience that are tough to get on campus to a
game on a non school day so the stars have to be aligned in
terms of schedule to get those kids to a game.
TLDR: Theres enough kids living on campus who care about sports
to fill up our student section. Hopefully one day theres a
mechanism to get them organized and connected. 2012-2016 that
mechanism was Jameel Warney. Hopefully one day theres something
more consistent then just a generational player to get those
       kids out.

The new transfer landscape and the always possible health/injury
issues that arise makes me think this team won't really round
into whatever it is until well into the new year, but consider
me intrigued by what I've seen so far. The players and depth in
the small sample size of games make me think there is some real
       promise with this group.
Pratt seems like the kind of player we rarely (or never) see at
SBU. O'Connor and Brown seem very stable ball control and
scoring guys. Goods appears to be a force down low, especially
by CAA standards. And then it seems we have, what?, 4-5-6 other
guys who really look like solid contributors.
Broadly, I've been very encouraged by the size and athleticism
of those 8-10 players we've seen getting time so far. Across
that lineup, I don't get a sense this team will get pushed
around in the CAA. Add the scoring potential and this looks like
a group that could win a lot of conference games.
I'm glad we're done with our non-D1 schedule. I wish we only had
one of those games and I wish it was an exhibition game, but
those wishes will never come true.
Don't know how much effort might be put into this, but SBU seems
to draw at least an okay community crowd of old people (that
would be me) and kids who like to run out for Cotton Eye Joe. I
would have no idea what might encourage more students to come,
if that's even possible any more. I don't think the chance to
win a small TV is going to do it.

this is one of those concepts weve been batting around for
decades- on why/how to fix things like pairing up students. for
example, as a freshman, i lived on a hall with seniors. why?
PS- as i just predicted, there will be ups (3-0) and downs
(close call with Farm State) this season!
