23-game win streak against Maine on the line here. How do we
feel?
I'm really interested in how this shapes up in the paint. We
were even with a Division III team on the glass in our opener.
Meanwhile, Maine got mauled underneath, losing the rebounding
battle 46-23 in its loss to GW, as well as 16-2 in second-chance
points. But they hung in with the ::checks notes::
Revolutionaries [emoji52] for a half and then some, trailing by
just one with 13 minutes to go until the wheels came off. They
have high aspirations, ranking behind only Vermont in the
America East preseason poll. GW has ideas of their own as they
were seeded fourth in the A-10.
And this is a team that lost its top five scorers to the portal
and to, you won't believe this, graduation. I didn't know
players actually still did that; I thought they just transferred
from school to school to their heart's content. All joking
aside, that a team as new as Maine is ranked so highly gives you
an idea of just how in flux the AE is.
We'll be in the company of once-removed basketball royalty. By
now, you surely know that Flagg is the twin brother of current
Mav wunderkind Cooper Flagg. Also of note: Mabrey's sister,
Marina, starred at Notre Dame and is a seven-year WNBA vet now
with the Connecticut Sun. It's also weird how, these days, guys
disappear from and reappear on our radar. We faced Mekhi Gray
four times in 2021 and 2022 when he was at NJIT. He then played
sparingly in one year at UMass Lowell, and is now with his third
AE team. I wonder how many people in history can claim that.
Watching Flagg for a little bit in the opener, he's going to be
good. In his first ever game, he came off the bench yet finished
second to Biel in minutes (29), in part due to foul trouble
inside. He did a little bit of everything for them, and even
though the turnovers were up (5), it was a promising start. They
counted on him a lot on the offensive end for an 18-year-old
kid. He'll only get better as the year goes on. Tough hairline
though. That won't get better.
Wincott definitely has "Flagg aces the test" or some iteration
of that in the queue. "Ace is the place where Maine's going with
the ball." Book them both.
Anyway, next to Flagg, I think the kid Biel has a chance to be
awesome in the AE, and cannot believe he wasn't better at his
previous stops. Wiry kid who has great handle, can put the ball
in the floor, post up or hit the open shot (36% from three last
year). I really can't believe it. He looked like Gueye out
there. All kinds of energy. He'll be tough on us.
Monday was sobering for us. You say, hey, it was our opener,
Brown will be better, so will O'Connor, matchups were wonky with
so little size out there for FSC, we'll round into shape. And
there were things to like ... Shoshkikj, Valentiny, Goods, and
Kojenets looked like good pieces for us. Gorman too as a
returnee. But still ... 66-59, at home, against a D-III. If
that's a game, what win against a Division I team can we be
certain of? Not any. And not Maine this weekend.
Somehow, I think we win. Brown rebounds with 15+ points, Goods
goes for a double-double, and we see more good things from these
international transfers. That's what I choose to believe. Let's
go. 2-0.

I know still early, but I hope the substituting settles down a
bit for SBU in this one. Of course one would expect that against
a DIII and it shouldn't have mattered, but the
disjointed/changing lineups on the floor perhaps contributed to
the struggle.
I'm especially interested in Shoshkikj as the team settles into
whatever it is this season. Is he the same player as O'Connor,
or can they co-exist on the floor as some version of a 1-2? How
do Brown and Pratt fit into the guard equation? Four (or five if
you add Toby) guys for two positions?
Seems at this level your 6'2" to 6'5" guards are often your
strength.
Maybe Goods plays a more consistent 30 mins and alleviates some
of our down-low worries?

My biggest question from the opener. How's that going to work? I
can't think of a situation where we had two bonafide 1s out
there and neither could be considered a 2. Remember: TO started
at the 2 alongside O'Connor. And then Shoshkikj came off the
bench and we were all like "I want more of THAT guy." So curious
how it unfolds.

It's not just us: Boise State, Western Michigan and Delaware
(haha! Leave the CAA for this!) all lost to sub-D1 opponents.

Is there a way to get some sort of discount on FloTv or is it
really $19.99 a month for SB basketball?

Solid first half so far.
Maine was an AE Finalist last year. Not sure how many players do
they have from last year's team though
