Villanova is going to the patriot league.
Since 2021 JMU, Delaware, Richmond, Willam &Mary and villanova.
A lot of people think Elon is going to be next one to leave.
Smart move. they will save a lot of money on traveling.

Not a surprise. Nova, Richmond, and William & Mary make Patriot
League football a bigger player in the East.
CAA football may be in for more changes.

This is the Elon board that I'm just acquainted with:
HTML https://elonphans.proboards.com
An Elon poster:
We might as well move down to Division 3 at this point.
The CAA is garbage, the Patriot won’t bother taking us, we
burned the SOCON bridge long ago and we don’t have the finances
to move up or be independent.
The real question is does our administration have a clue as to
what we should/can do or are they too busy making up pretty
PowerPoints with word salad??
With the better teams bailing from the CAA at least SBU will
have a chance at a conference championship.

Really? the flagship state University of NY should drop to D3?
c'mon!
I say hold on steady to see how things play out. but D3 is not
an option for Stony Brook

While the departure of three strong programs from the CAA might
give us a better chance of getting the auto bid, it might give
us a lesser chance at getting an at-large bid.
CAA might be on the way to being a one-bid league.

Quite right. Villanova was the most high profile school overall
in the CAA so I only see a downward slide. I don’t know if the
CAA commissioners were motivated more by a “bigger is better”
mentality or DEI considerations when they voted to admit four
more schools (including two HBCUs) to make a 16 team conference,
but that decision has come back to bite them in the arse.

Many years ago, the NCAA put a rule in place that all your
sports have to be in the same division with the exception of a
few schools that were grandfathered in so SBU can't do that.
Once Elon announces that they're leaving the remaining 11 CAA
schools will have to figure out what they're going to do. One
rumor is that schools from the NEC and CAA merge and form a new
league. Also, there are rumors of a couple of other schools that
might still be poached by other conferences.

There is nothing to see here. This was inevitable. Villanova is
a resource limited, small school that has always prioritized its
basketball program. It was never going to sign on to the
congressional settlement for football, and the PL is the league
where likeminded small privates/publics go.
Hence Richmond, W&M, Villanova, probably Elon. Bryant, Campbell,
Monmouth are really trying, which is why they joined. We'll see
if they make it work and for how long.
This was always going to happen. I think the CAA expanded as it
did because it was giving a bunch of schools time to figure out
their finances. Those who couldn't make the league work are
leaving. It sucks that they're better football schools, but that
won't be the case for long once things rebalance with the
transfer portal/athlete payments.
I truly believe that conferences are they are built now will
almost entire reform as the non-P5 FBS and FCS get closer in
level. It is even possible that programs who sign on will merge
in football once the P4 leave.
I saw a post that Albany hasn't signed the settlement yet. They
very well may not. SBU has announced that it has.
My suspicion is that only a small crust of FCS schools sign the
settlement for football. Those will merge with FBS. The rest
will reform FCS as a true 1-AA level league.
That league will have nothing to do with Olympic sports, which
is why W&M is content to stay in the CAA for everything else.
Ditto Richmond for the A-10. This has nothing to do with any
sport but football.
