Our last home game and the regular season finale. It'd be great
to find a way to get this one.
Elon looked like a possible contender in the early going,
stunning Notre Dame in South Bend in November, and getting off
to a 5-2 start in conference. It's been tough sledding since
then however, as they've gone just 3-7 in their last 10, putting
them in a pack with three other teams at 8-9 in the CAA. With a
win tomorrow, they'll land the 7 spot, having gone 3-0 against
their 8-9 brethren. With a loss, they can drop to 10, but 7
through 10, what's the real difference on a neutral floor
besides getting UNCW or Towson in the next round? Not much.
The Phoenix have been terrific on the glass all year, averaging
nearly five more rebounds than their opponent in conference
play, an effort led by the monstrous Van Komen and Sherry, who's
got a nice mix of skills inside, and can step outside and knock
down the perimeter shot too. For a big guy, Van Komen is
somewhere between baby-giraffe-on-ice and plodding giant. He was
a great add to move Sherry to the 4, where he's more of a
natural fit. We really have to see how we'll keep them off the
glass AND off the free throw line. They're one of those teams
with more FTs made than their opponents have attempted – which
the really good teams always seem to do.
We may get a break here, with two of their three top scorers
potentially missing this one. Nick Dorn (15.2 ppg) has been out
a few weeks, and TJ Simpkins (14.7 ppg) missed Thursday's game
due to injury too. Those are two pretty big hits. Given the low
stakes in tomorrow's game, could I see them just getting their
guys rest? I could. If they return for the conference
tournament, I'd give them a shot at making a run.
Meanwhile, up here, we're still scratching and clawing.
Overwhelmed by Hampton and Northeastern, but we've been largely
competitive over the past month otherwise. It's been good to see
the fire, even as the Ls racked up. Other rosters might have
       quit. [emoji109]
Stat of little significance: Geno Ford is 5-1 coaching against
Billy Taylor – 4-0 while at Kent State, 1-1 here. Taylor has the
Phoenix moving upward though – eight wins his first year, 13
last year, and they have a shot at 20 before this one's over.
Maintaining that, as we know, in this climate, is difficult.
This is the first year where the northern schools in our
conference really were nothing but also-rans. Hofstra finished
second in the regular season in each of the last two seasons but
has obviously dropped back. This year, the best we can do is
Monmouth at 10-7. Campbell, Elon, William & Mary, they all had
big years, joining Charleston, UNCW and Towson. If one team was
to climb the ranks next year, I'd guess it's Northeastern, if
they can keep everybody, which is a big if.
We're no different. You have to be thrilled with how O'Connor
has played the last few weeks. It's crazy how he took a step
back around the new year but then a few big steps forward in
       February. 18 for 49 from three in 17 conference games (.367);
just 4 for 20 in the 13 before that (.200). You love to see a
kid coming into his own. He had no choice with Octave and Frey
going down, but he rose to the occasion. Same with Snoddy – 11
and 9 in conference play after averaging 6.5 and 7 in the OOC.
I like our chances today better than I would have a week ago or
a month ago. We're seemingly invested while Elon is banged up
and perhaps ready to turn their sights to DC. Go Seawolves.

       7 foot 4 😳
I meant to include … have we ever gone against a bigger player
in our gym? Or ever? We’ve played Bridgeport eight times but
didn’t during Manute Bol’s one season there. It’s possible that
       Van Komen’s it, right?
       For Division I anyway, yes:

All right, with Hofstra’s win this afternoon, we get the 13 seed
with a victory tonight. That would pit us against Delaware on
Friday. A loss and it’s Hofstra round three.

Luster, oh my! Snoddy also got 1k career points.
What led the crowd to finally come tonight?

A million kids. Definitely something with the local elementary
schools. Whatever they did … do that again. 6pm start feels like
       a sweet spot.
Zero students though. Indifference is strange to me.
Cheapest walkup ticket was $21 🤨. Definitely up from
earlier this year, and I think it was $10 last year or the year
       before. But people showed up.
Good back and forth between Luster and Simpkins. I really give
Luster credit for the way he’s competing defensively and being a
       positive influence otherwise.
       Quin Gorman – huge minutes.

ok snoddy had another monster game, as is usual these days.
but o'connor's block down the stretch? that's such a rare play,
all ball no foul, from a guard no less, a freshman, during
crunch time. and then hits two more FTs.

A good win lets hope Heilbronn doesn't give geno an extension
       tonight.
