Less than two weeks left. And all that's left to determine is
just how low we'll finish in our program's history. We went 4-24
in 2005-2006 but are trailing the 7-23 team from 2007-08 in the
       wins column.
The difference, as you know, is that Pikiell was building
something. And he built it all the way up to the 2016 tournament
with multiple chances/missed opportunities prior to that. Boals
won 24 games – third most in our Division I history – and jumped
on another opportunity. Now, it just feels like we're plummeting
and that, barring a change, we'll continue to head in that
       direction.
I get the situation that we and other teams are in, with the
portal the way it is, the NIL situation pretty limited from what
I've been able to glean. But these programs are in the same boat
as us. I have no info on whether Maine, Bryant, SIU
Edwardsville, Siena, Longwood, St. Thomas, Youngstown State,
Northern Colorado are or aren't making money, but how different
could it really be from here?
How is there no screen for O'Connor yesterday? How is that what
we come up with? What'd we do to beat Central Michigan? High
screen and roll with Wight and O'Connor. Same situation, with a
timeout, we play it out, everybody stands there and O'Connor
puts up a 22 footer. When nothing was happening, how's Geno not
rescue them, huddle up and come up with something/anything?
When the HBCUs joined the CAA, these two teams from the always
awful MEAC, I raised a brow. And when they immediately stunk, I
sighed. I thought they'd be completely overmatched. And since
they joined the league we're 6-2 against them, including 2-0
against Hampton, so pretty good. The first L feels likely as
Hampton's had a really nice season, including a four-game win
streak coming in and a sparkling 9-4 mark at home. This team is
DEEP, trotting out 10 guys on the regular, and they even played
11 in their stunning rout of UNCW yesterday. 15 for 23 from
       three usually helps.
You can see the improvement just in the numbers, with Mullen
going from 15 and 8 last year to only 8 and 7 this year. They
brought in experienced Division I talent in Farrakhan (8 ppg for
West Virginia), Beale and Long (both all-conference types at
Norfolk State and Canisius respectively) and Wayne Bristol Jr.
(13 ppg at Howard, then three seasons at Georgetown). So legit
reinforcements to go with a promising freshman in Johnson.
I was going to say that our fortifications haven't delivered but
... Luster's been terrific, Wight and O'Connor good, Octave OK
and Nyarko a mystery. They're not all going to hit. The problem
is that, as for returnees, only Snoddy has been a starter level
talent, and while his versatility and energy are awesome, that
he's our, probably, second best scorer rather than our fourth or
fifth is telling. Retention's an issue. That's what hurt us this
year more than anything, especially with Frey
       injured/inconsistent.
FWIW, if the season ended today, we have either Hofstra or
Delaware, whether we're the 13 or the 14. And if we're
victorious there, we'd be looking at Campbell or Monmouth the
next day, Elon or Northeastern if they move up. It's all the
       same really. We're all also-rans.
I suspect Hampton handles their business tomorrow.

I need the Statesman to do an internal investigation on this
Geno extension nonsense. It sounds stupid but Heilbron has a
long history of getting swindled, so! I just want Geno gone
after this year. He's gonna be here longer than he was at Kent
State and Bradley combined. Will Stony Brook really be Geno
Ford's definitive coaching tenure? I think when he was hired, we
thought he'd be gone in 5 years either because he would get
poached by a bigger school or because he would underperform and
be let go. But he's still here.
Trivia question - the player with the most single-season 3s for
us. Would you have guessed 2019-20 Makale Foreman? I wouldn't
have! But, he had 104 that year. I knew he was a great shooter
but I don't remember him getting that many. It feels like Luster
is close to the record, but he's at 87 with at least four games
left. He'll need to average a tick over 4 per game to break it,
and winning the first CAA Tournament game would help.

well yes but at what cost? he probably took 300 attempts that
season. otherwise known as ~10 per game, or every ~2 minutes we
       have the ball.

I have been a Heilbron defender, or at least abstained from
going at him – athletics has had some success in the lesser
sports, we have to be realistic about how big-time we can be,
and nobody's perfect. But if he was coaxed into giving Geno
another extension after a good few days in DC last year, that
would be really disappointing, especially if a decision didn't
have to be made at that moment. I'm holding out hope that,
because it was never announced, it didn't actually happen and we
may see a change soon, but know full well that the department
       isn't big on announcements.
Statesman, I know you're all 19 and 20 and 21 years old and
these are difficult inquiries/conversations to have with
adults/people in power, but what fans the program has have to
know. And SH has spoken to them before, and I think he's a
decent person who would recognize these kids are trying to cut
their teeth in the business and are "doing their job." But we
gotta know. When he told the Statesman in 2023 "we’ve got to
have success. We have to be good in basketball, and I’ll leave
it at that", what did that mean? How is success being defined?
Because they're not winning, students don't care and the
community's interest is waning too. We are moving toward
       irrelevance.
Bottom line: it could be so much better.

Unfortunately we heard from a very close source that Geno did
receive 2 extensions last year with the 2nd one coming after the
DC weekend. The only way I've justified it in my head is maybe
Heilbron was getting calls requesting to interview Geno and he
got nervous? Idk, infuriating either way.

       A Jeremiah Nyarko sighting.
       Philip must be out.
