       Clash of the titans!
Sigh. Not what we were hoping for this season ... merely hoping
to pull out a victory at measly A&T. The loser's banished to the
       league's cellar.
We've had the season-long discussion ... what is it, the offense
or the defense? Obviously, the answer's both (pet peeve of mine
is when a reporter asks a coach/player if something is A or B
and the answer is inevitably "a little bit of both"; it's almost
always "a little bit of both" and thus a throwaway). Anyway,
I've sided with it being an offense problem for us – even though
our defensive rating is 353rd on the season. We've just lacked
options, creators, creativity. But maybe we've been a little
better recently? We're actually dead even in paint points the
last five games (buoyed by an astonishing 42-24 edge against
Towson). We've logged 14 or more assists in five of seven games
starting with our last battle with A&T, and 93 of our 176
buckets have been assisted in that stretch. That's pretty good
for us. So a hint better even though we're shorthanded.
The following is pretty self explanatory.
SBU shooting percentage in five D-I wins: .490 (129-263)
       SBU shooting percentage in 21 D-I losses: .390 (462-1183)
       SBU 3-pt percentage in five D-I wins: .473 (44-93)
       SBU 3-pt percentage in 21 D-I losses: .295 (138-468)
Let's break it down even further:
Luster points per game in five D-I wins: 20.6
Luster points per game in 21 D-I losses: 13.9
       Luster 3-pt percentage in five D-I wins: .556 (20-36; 7.2
       attempts/gm)
       Luster 3-pt percentage in 21 D-I losses: .377 (57-151; 7.2
       attempts/gm)
This is no slight against Luster; 14 a night's good too. But I
think we've all recognized that, without a Luster outburst, our
path to victory is narrow and full of pitfalls. That Snoddy has
stepped up his game offensively is one of the biggest surprises
that I can remember in recent years. A shooter? Somebody who's
looking for his offense? And I'm totally good with that? It's
been awesome. He was just a glue guy for us – and he's still
that. And even though the uptick in aggressiveness still feels
out of necessity, he's making more shots and even more plays. I
like it. O'Connor too. We just need every iota of firepower,
even if that's not their number one asset.
Anybody know if Octave or Frey are close?
A&T is one curious case. Glasper, their leading scorer, gets
suspended (for I think marijuana possession) and enters the
portal. Forrest, their leading scorer, was also suspended (maybe
for the same?) but I haven't heard anything about leaving the
program. But the knock on them was their erratic play and
behavior. And lo and behold, remove that from the mix and A&T's
been a lot better, winning at Elon and against Campbell last
night, and nearly upsetting the Camels as well as Charleston on
the road. All with just six guys seeing the floor.
       I see some similarities.
We didn't see Chitikoudis in our first meeting, and he makes a
big difference. Then you add 6-11, 225-pound Effstratios
Kalliontzis, an active Lamothe and maybe even 6-9, 245-pound
Jason Murphy, that's a lot to combat inside with just Wight and
Snoddy more or less. With the bigger lineup, they've won the
rebounding battle in their last five games after losing it in
       the previous nine.
Lamothe deserves more than a mention. He's been terrific, going
for 20 or more in five of their last six, including 25 points in
       their come-from-behind win over Campbell.
Granted, we ran circles around them in their last meeting – the
last game with Forrest and Glasper. They looked hapless and
totally uninspired. And in a season where everything has looked
arduous, instead it looked effortless that night. We shot the
heck out of it (season-high .525) and racked up a non-St-Joe's
season-high 17 assists. It won't be nearly the cakewalk this
time. In fact, we'll be a modest dog against a 6-22 team who we
beat by 15 a few weeks ago.
But I get it here. Even in defeat, even with zero depth, A&T has
earned some stripes. It's at their place, they recognize it's a
game they should win, and they'll want to avenge their loss
here, and it's a legitimate chance to win two straight. They
have a solid corps with which they could compete next year, if
       everyone stays.
On our end, hey, it's a lost year. Best case scenario, we win
three of the next four, win one in the CAAs and get to 10 wins.
Not likely, but that's really the best case, at least in terms
of results within a season. The guys are still playing hard,
whether it's to empty the tank to close out their careers or to
put them in a good position for offseason negotiation. On the
flip side, others might argue that the best case is any sequence
of outcomes that results in us hitting the reset button on the
       bench.

i agree that our success usually rides on how well we shoot.
have i not been clear about that? ::) ::) ::)
       good write up. GO SB

Is FloSports down for anyone else?
Being outrebounded 33-19, oh my. 13-3 on the offensive boards.

What a shame. It looks like it's gonna be a close finish. Luster
with 21 points – all in the second half.

Geno how do you not call a timeout on the final possession? An
O'Connor step back three is not the best play! Get it to Luster!
Flashbacks to the 2011 AE title game with the foul called with
0.6 secs left to go. I thought we had overtime at least. Sheesh.
A&T won 3 so now we're in last again. At least Geno would be
more likely to get the boot.

Does Geno give statements after games? He used to do a press
conference after home games that would be posted on YouTube. but
I'm not aware of any of his recent post game conferences.
You rarely see SB getting off a good shot to end a half, and
they also struggle as the shot clock is winding down...I wonder
       why...

Have they stopped posting them because of how bad the season has
       gone?
Luster scored 23 points for you in the second half alone. He
made four 3s and drew fouls on several other attempts. You'd
just recovered a missed free throw. Why do you not call a
timeout just to set up the offense and draw up the final play
knowing that you have the last possession? Instead, the offense
looks completely broken with no idea what to do, if you're
O'Connor I'd rather see you drive it inside rather than take a
       deep 3. Horrible ending.
At least Snoddy got his 4th double double in the last 5 games. I
think someone compared him to Josh Hart a while ago and he's
been such a pivotal player ever since Octave and Frey went down.
In fact, he's averaging 16.9 points and 10.4 rebounds since. The
       game-tying 3 was so clutch.

In fairness, if he drew up a play in a timeout, we would have
       gotten a worse shot.
I'll do the postgame for everybody:
"Well, you know, we didn't want to put ourselves in a position
where we had to inbound the ball without a timeout. We can live
with the shot we got. You have to give A&T credit. That's a
       really good basketball team."
Yeah yeah yeah. That can't be your shot when the game is tied.
Take it to the hole and make the officials make a judgment call.
Instead, a low percentage three. Some of it's on O'Connor, but
geez, just one time in six years you'd love to see an ATO play
result in an easy bucket or at least a really good look. Or free
throws. Instead, no screens, no movement, nothing downhill, and
a shot you could have gotten anytime.
I’m torn between whether I like the shot at seven seconds,
allowing for an offensive rebound, or I’d have preferred it
       later. Either way, tough look.
       Guys battled. Just not enough.

Geno isnt getting the boot after Heilbronn gave him an
extension. he is collecting his pay check and laughing all the

       your writing a big check.
