I was searching for an analogy for Towson and came up with them
being the Arturo Gatti of the CAA as I feel like they're always
in these bar fights, come out bloodied and usually win. Or the
Korean Zombie from the MMA world. But then I got to think that
those fights were nothing if not electric, particularly Gatti,
and electric Towson is not. So maybe Jamie Moyer is a better
comparison – it's slow, it doesn't look that good, but in the
end, poof, 269 career wins. If the Tigers can win today and
again at Monmouth on Saturday (a tough one; they're 18-1 at home
the last two years), then they'll have gone a whole month
without losing. this not long after a puzzling six-game slide
       from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
They were the preseason favorites, and returned so many guys, so
it shouldn't be that surprising. They went into Wilmington,
Drexel, Northeastern and Delaware, so we shouldn't expect much
       of a dropoff here.
When we played them a few weeks ago, I think that was the first
sign that, wait, we might have a pulse. We had a six-point
halftime lead, got that up to eight at one point, and led past
the midway point of the second half. But Towson did just enough,
getting into the paint (20 second-half paint points) and to the
       line.
A tangent: Peeking over at the AE, here are Vermont's KenPom
       ratings the last 10 seasons: 151, 63, 76, 76, 76, 133, 54, 114,
104, 272. Meanwhile, Bryant is flattening everybody.
Anyway, I've been impressed with our defensive intensity the
last couple weeks and hope that we come out with that same
energy. The close result in our last meeting should encourage
our guys to believe that they can end this run that Towson's on.
We're fine with the slower pace – just two fast break points
between us last time. We rank 315th (SBU) and 352nd (Towson) in
pace nationally. I've always wondered – and because of how bad
it's looked at times, continue to wonder – whether we have
enough offensive firepower, and that O'Connor's emerged, against
two good defenses no less, is encouraging. We need him and
       Snoddy alongside Luster.
Now, with Luster, he only gave us two points in 19 minutes last
time, and it wasn't because of foul trouble. I can't remember
what happened there. Did we just ride Frey's hot hand, or did
       Towson have his number?
Towson was dealing with some illness on Saturday in a truly
horrific 55-54 game against Drexel. We'll see if they're back to
       100 percent tonight.
I'm still dubious about our ability to score the ball but ...
those were two "good losses" I'd say, enough to suggest that, if
we get a few good bounces, we can take this one. But I dunno.
       We'll see.

Thanks, as always, for the great preview, Checkmate.
I have a good feeling about tonight. Against the four teams atop
the current CAA standings, we've lost by an average of 7 points:
       Towson (4), UNCW (10), W&M (7), Charleston (7).
We've gotten up for the big games. If we played the rest of the
conference the way we've played the leaders, we'd have a very
different record. The difference in the losses against the top
four has been our play in "winning time." Those teams know how
to gut it out in late game situations. Let's see if we can make
some plays down the stretch and knock off the conference leader
       tonight.

Thanks for checking in, Brook. So far so good.
21-10 on the glass so far. 20-10 advantage on paint points. Very
       surprising.

33-32 at the half, I'll take it.
We're winning the rebound battle by that much? Wow.

Whatever SB was doing well Towson shut them down in the last 5
minutes and virtually zilch from the bench.

We may be one of the best 32 min teams in the conference. We may
be one of the worst final 8 minute teams in all of D1.

There was a moment late in the game, where the announcers were
saying that Stony Brook had to get Luster going, and he was just
standing on the opposite side of the court from the ball doing
nothing. I don’t blame him at all, but under Geno, you rarely
see good off the ball movement, and you rarely see this team
getting high percentage shots in late game situations.

Towson did an awesome job on Luster. He was putting on mileage
too but defenders tailed him around screens and got a hand in
his face. Take him away and we are looking around for somebody
       to step up.
Snoddy and Wight were awesome. Just not enough.
40 more minutes from COC and Luster. They had to be gassed.
Some people gasped when a Towson guy was alone underneath the
hoop up seven … and then ran out the clock. [emoji383]
Hofstra’s sliding a bit too. Perhaps no Plotnikov Saturday.
Turned an ankle late against Northeastern. Good defender and a
       glue guy.

Another tough one where we battled a quality opponent but just
couldn't do enough in crunch time to pull it out.
       A few observations.
Wight was great. Had some nice rolls in the lane where he caught
the ball with his back to the basket but had the poise and
footwork to finish through contact. He had back-to-back and-1s
in the second half, if my memory is correct. He also defended
       well against Towson's larger big.
Snoddy was tough all night. Used his body well in the lane for
some finishes in traffic. Defended well. Hit the glass hard.
Philip had a highlight reel dunk on the head of a Tiger that I
       thought had #SCTop10 potential.
Was hoping O'Connor would stay hot after his 27-point outburst
at UNCW, but he has stretches where he defers a lot. Excited to
see his confidence grow with experience.
It was a great effort against the conference leader. +13 rebound
margin. +7 second chance pts. +18 paint points. A lot to like
about the effort, but 16 TOs and 3-21 from deep usually won't
cut it against a good team.
