We all know what's coming here. And UNCW awaits on Saturday. I
hope we soaked it all in this past weekend. It was nice to
finally end the skid, but now we enter an absolute gauntlet of a
fortnight that could produce some ugly results.
This isn't quite the wagon that Charleston has been in the past,
but you're still talking about a pretty decorated college coach,
a returning All-CAA first team selection in Brzovic, a terrific
floor general in Fulton, and pieces that Mack assembled in a
short time. Boyd, this bulldog of a guard who averaged 18 a game
at Lipscomb last year, was considered the best get from the
transfer portal, but they really found something with the kid
Tavarez, who made the jump all the way from the MEAC – from a
bad MEAC team in fact – to becoming the second option on a CAA
title contender. He made the all-conference rookie team a year
       ago, averaging 17 a night.
Now those are some impact transfers. And they needed them as
Smith, Scott, Rodgers and Burnham all split when Kelsey left
(three joining him in Louisville) and Butler and Policelli
graduated. Talent-wise, they don't feel that far off, and Mack
has them getting up and down the floor too. Last year, they took
65 shots a night, whereas this year they come in at just over
       60. The threes, however, are down from more than 30 to fewer
than 24 per game, so a distinguishable difference. You can't
argue with the results from either coach, although C of C has
some competition this year after running away and hiding early
       the last few seasons.
Of course, it really isn't a level playing field. Charleston
sold a record $1.2 million in tickets last year, and their
athletic fund raised close to $2 million. Exciting, winning
basketball, a vibrant coach, a program embraced by its students
and city, stands filled, concessions for days. And good on them
for ponying up more than million dollars a year for Mack ... of
course, you have to make money to do that. This year, the
arena's packed again with 4,886 fans a game. Ten years ago, this
same program was at 2,733. Pretty awesome.
It's hard to believe that, even with all that, we were a bucket
away from knocking them off to go to the tournament. The team
wasn't perfect – just 10-8 in conference – but when you have
experienced guards, size inside, guys who were playing to keep
their careers going, you just never know. Rewatching the
highlights of that, what a wild game. I'd love to go back and
set a screen for Clarke to get him to the middle of the floor
and see what happened from there. You could argue that should
have been TSM, but really you can't complain with AC in that
spot the way he was going.
Frey seems out for a good while, but maybe we see Octave. It's
hard to say we looked markedly better than in previous games
when you're going up against a lousy A&T side. Breaking it down,
I liked O'Connor's assertiveness offensively, I like that
Snoddy's shot is dropping, and I like Wight's jump hook and wish
we saw a couple more of them. I don't need 31 from Luster but
sitting in the high teens and an occasional rise into the 20s,
especially against a good team, would be outstanding. Teams are
definitely aware of him, and I like that he's drawing fouls and
getting to the line. Charleston will be really really tough
though. The spread on this will be right around 16, and with the
way I expect we'll struggle scoring, that seems a little light
       to me.

Not much chance we keep this close but will nice to get a big
game feel with it being on the national broadcast and in a full
arena at Charleston. Hopefully we put up a decent fight. Not
sure of Jared's availability but the rumor is he is closer to
       return than Octave.

That's interesting. He looked to be laboring pretty good in that
walking boot on Saturday. We could use either or both, that's
       for sure.

We're the team up 10-0 at the first media timeout? Huh??

there might not be a better passing team in all of Div1 than
CoC. it's a clinic. no wonder they continually win. 18
assists with plenty of time left.
a month ago at this point in a game, we had 2. and that was
       against monmouth.

Man, you have to give the guys credit. I would have thought this
was going to be a 25 point game. We ambushed C of C in a packed
arena and hung around, even forcing turnovers late to keep it
       from getting out of hand.
Another incredible effort from Luster and four other guys got
into double figures. O’Connor notches a career-high seven
assists, breaking his mark from five days ago when he had six
       against A&T.
Headcount aside, Nahar’s offense is too important to this team.
Career high point total for him.
       2, 11 and 11 for Fulton. Awesome.
If anyone believes in moral victories, this is one of them.

It says a lot about how far this program has fallen when losing
to a team not even in the top 100 is like winning.

I still think it was a good effort from the team, although your
comment certainly adds perspective. I can't help but feel the
team is better than its record. Maybe that's on Geno...

I think Nahar will get more assertive the more he plays. I'm not
saying throw the towel on the season, but him and Gorman will
benefit the more they play and get used to the speed of CAA
       play.
I hope both O'Connor, Luster and Frey stick around next year.
That wouldn't be such a bad backcourt.

Tough loss; a game we could have won. We’ve been playing better
of late, but still having trouble getting across the finish
line. I thought Geno poorly managed the end game tn, by not
using his team fouls in time to put CoC in the 1-and-1. As far
as Luster goes, he’s playing himself into a nice payday next
season; unfortunately, it won’t be here.
