What are administrators seeing in Heilbron that the rest of us
aren't? This whole shady secret extension BS that he always
pulls makes him so unlikeable especially when they always
backfire. Is the department really in a much better place with
him than without him? Are we sure that the average AD wouldn't
do a way better job than he's been doing?
Geno had one fluky run that he couldn't even totally finish off.
With all the big boppers graduating, it would have been a
perfect time to start a new era and be done with him.

When Stanley left he got lucky and the new president didn't have
time to do much so he got more time and now he has another
interim president who will probably give him more time to make
it easier for the new president whenever they come in. hes been
lucky a lot and it looks like that will keep happening for now.
and the programs and fans pay the price. he got off the hook for
the ban when no one cared. and covid got him more time. why is
he still here? can't he get another job? why leave if you can
play the system and the fans too?

Word is now Geno was extended twice last year. Once midseason
and once after the tournament. Terrible mistake from Heilbron
who once again sneaks a secret extension. We're screwed.

YGBSM. Can somebody at the Statesman look into this?

Why don't you just call Heilbronn and ask him yourself?
631-632-7205. Your a taxpayer and you have a right to know.

I remember Fiore. He was the ultimate go-getter that really put
SBU on the map. Only from what I've heard, he had a toxic
relationship with some of the SBU dept staff and with some of
the female athletes. They paid him a lot of cash to walk away
with a promise of not suing the university for dismissal. IMO,
had he stuck around we would have had much faster and better
results in FB and BB. However, if not for the dismissal, I'm
sure he would have been poached by other universities (I
remember Princeton, among others, had interest). Fast forward
to Heilbron, I have heard that he is liked within the department
staff, and offered a much "safer" and less controversial choice
than Fiore. Not sure how the athletes view him. Heilbron has
been ultra conservative with his coaching selections. His one
big BB selection, Boals, bolted after 2 years, but he was forced
to hire someone at the time. I do NOT fault Heilbron for going
with assistant coach Ford after Boals left, as he tried to
provide continuity with a stacked team that was poised to be
champs the next year (unfortunately, we know how 4 of them
subsequently bolted, after Garcia started the transfer parade).
It's a lot easier to go with the status quo, than to make a
large effort in finding the next coach, and that is the choice
Heilbron has made with Priore for years, and now with Geno.
Both large mistakes, IMO.

Our daughter was there when boals left and knew a lot of players
there is a story behind geno being hired and why the players
left and a lot of people would say SH got played when he didn't
have the pulse of what was happening and how the team really
felt. why don't you think those players and Warney don't come
back a lot? because of how jay young was treated by SH and how
players were treated by geno. how has that worked out for SH and
the team and the fans? no one at the games should tell you that.

Rolling back to when Pikiell left, I remember a lot of players
and fans were pissed that Jay Young wasn't offered. For
whatever reason, Heilbron decided to go to the outside for hire.
My comment above was for when Boals left, not Pikiell. From an
outside view, hiring Geno when Boals left, seemed like the right
move. Whether or not he played Heilbron; I have no visibility
into that. You may have better inside info on that front from
your daughter. For what it's worth, I've also heard that
several of the players from last year's team were pro-Geno and
pro-Rickard. That could be due to winning, getting playing
time, getting NIL $, etc.
Regarding Jay Young, it's still a bit of a mystery as to why he
and Dougher got the heave ho at Fairfield. Speculation on use
of prostitutes on a OOC trip, and lying to cover up. But it's
been as silent as the Fiore dismissal.

Coach Rickard is a very nice man and a very good coach. If geno
leaves he would be a good hire the community likes him and he
could grow the program from the ground up with the community
behind him. your not going anywhere with the current situation
so you may as well plan long term knowing you will probably
never be good at nil until the program can get the community
behind it with a coach who would be a lot like pikiell was in
the community. ask around in the three village area if you know
people who live here. they will tell you sb isn't something
they're going to watch since the downfall from 2016. Heilbronn
lost the community and it is sad.

And don't forget the arena has no name on it since the credit
union left and that means there was no money from that this
year. why doesn't it have a new sponsor? it could be that
Heilbronn can't get one because of the empty arena for years and
the same with the Lavalle stadium. if you look around you will
see a lot of things not being done here and its a shame. its
like they don't care about anything but a pension.

Not that I could make any real assessment, but I found myself
trying to track Heilbron around the arena last night wondering,
what is THIS guy thinking about what I see? Seemed for a time he
was behind the bench in a seat with his family, and they all
looked stoic and bored. Then I saw him later in the tunnel,
seemingly chatting it up and more spirited with whomever was
there with him.
What's it all mean? Heck if I know.
Then, among the coaching staff, it seemed to me Rickard was the
only one trying to inject some life into the situation.
I like Dan Rickard on a personal level and do get a sense, if by
chance he was at the helm, he would be more outwardly engaged
with the community and fan base. Perhaps much like Pikiel was, I
know he's settled in the community with young kids. Maybe that's
worth something in the current situation.
Anyway, all just random thoughts from last night as I was
otherwise disengaged and bored.
Finally, for whatever it's worth, I sent an email to Heilbron
today with my thoughts as a season ticket holder about the
performance overall of the team, especially last night. The talk
has been since 2016 that SBU would be good in men's basketball,
and just wanted SH to know that, frankly, I don't see evidence
this is happening. Last night, especially, was embarrassing.
Don't know if such things do any good, but maybe others should
contact SH about these things if you haven't already?
