Coming off an almost-tournament berth season, I would have
expected Geno to be able to recruit much better than he did. I
know NIL $ is a big issue, but relying on 2 JC kids (one of
which has done well, and will be off and packing to greener
pastures next year) and a kid who was recruited by AZ St and
doesn't play, was not a successful recruiting year for Geno.
Did he think Fitz would never get serious NIL $ elsewhere, and
hence, recruited small? Octave has been hit or miss all season,
and is probably over-priced as the leading NIL recipient this
year. Did Geno think we had enough PG depth with Toby/O'Connor?
This team fights hard, but has a discombobulated offense, and
has no one on the roster that can/wants to take the big shot in
a game. Hence, our late game collapses. Geno could add value
there by instilling confidence, but it hasn't happened to date.
Contract and union rules aside, not sure how you can't make a
change here.

Is anybody here on this board giving money to the nil at SB for
basketball? If you are do you do it once a year or monthly?

But, the apathy around our sports on campus is shocking. The
student attendance at these games is atrocious. Stony Brook was
always a "commuter" school, but the apathy is at all time high.
The students are not engaged at all. I think more students go to
my local high school game than a stony brook game.

really the only thing worth discussing here. the good news is
that mccormick gets it. will his successor?

There is no decision day in March because he was probably
extended and sb never tells you that. hes here for a long time.
I disagree. Who gets/gives two-year contract extensions? Is
there a less enthusiastic vote of confidence?
They’ve been done, but usually it’s tacking two years on the
back end of an already long-term deal. So-and-so gets a two-year
extension through 2030. This is through 2026 – next season – and
they can start negotiating an extension – or not – at the end of
this season.
Heilbron’s quote from a couple years ago:
“I really want Geno to be successful because I think he’s a
really good coach. But we’ve got to have success. We have to be
good in basketball, and I’ll leave it at that.”
That, to me, says that Geno’s on a short leash. I give Heilbron
credit for biting the bullet with Priore. And, short of a
playoff run, could that have gone better than it did? National
coach of the year, exciting offense, reputation restored, and we
managed to keep him around. Most importantly, it showed that,
with the portal, with the right guy in charge, the whole thing
can change in a flash. Now, I’m not sure what to do with the
students. That’s a tough one. Or NIL – also tough. But we can
reverse course here. And I think we will.
Heilbronn kept giving coach prior extensions and should have
made a decision a long time ago. he didn't have a choice after
his last season when he didn't win a game. he is bad at his job
and people say that proire was controlling the ad.

Unfortunately, Cosh is not a long term answer. If he repeats
another successful year like this one, he's gone. He even
admitted at one of his acceptance speeches for coach of the year
that "most people told me not to take the Stony Brook job" which
I found shocking.
On paper, this university should have everything necessary to
have a successful athletics program. High endowment, large
student body enrollment, good rankings and international
recognition, and very little competition locally or regionally
(except maybe Rutgers and St John's),
etc.
But, the apathy around our sports on campus is shocking. The
student attendance at these games is atrocious. Stony Brook was
always a "commuter" school, but the apathy is at all time high.
The students are not engaged at all. I think more students go to
my local high school game than a stony brook game.
This was not the case when I was there 2006-2010. It's only
gotten worse and Helibron is mostly to blame. Pray that we get a
new President of the university that sees the potential and
invests heavily in it. Otherwise, I have no clue why we jumped
into the CAA. Either we are all in, or we are all out.
Otherwise, this is just a waste of time and money. There's a
reason why another sponsor hasn't taken over for Island Federal
Bank for the naming rights of the basketball arena either.
Geno is not a good coach. I think that's obvious at this point
and time. He had a great run last year with some 5th year young
men that were ballers and could create their own shot. He is
completely incapable of competiting in today's changed college
landscape.
Do we even have a "general manager" of NIL like most other
schools do? A coach can't possible manage on their own. I like
Geno personally, and he seems like a straight shooter and honest
guy. But the results have been a total disaster this year.
Unless we devote ourselves to a total change in culture, it's
going to be more of the same. In today's sports landscape, you
can't be on a budget. Stony Brook is trying to have it both ways
and the results are terrible. You need to either be ALL IN or
ALL OUT. Otherwise we are wasting money that can be better spent
elsewhere, and thats a shame because I am still a huge fan.
-Everyone says that Stony Brook is a commuter school. But in
reality, Stony Brook, is the largest residential campus of SUNY
system. We have a fairly large residential student population.
Administrators cannot use this as an excuse.
not enough effort is taken to drive students to the game.
How many of the folks here believe that the dining hall and
public area lounge televisions across campus are playing the
televised basketball games (on SNY) while the game is on? The
school cannot even get that right. There is no coordination
across facilities to drive school pride. No one cares to elevate
pride in SBU athletics

I didn’t hear why Woodard was a DNP in this game. What’s the
word on that?
Does an undergraduate population that is 46 percent Asian care
whatsoever about college basketball? And that’s everybody. I’d
love to know what the on-campus demographics are.

Frey's game has developed nicely this year and he has become
more than a 3-point shooter. A little like Policelli, tho not
quite as good. I hope for his sake he has some transfer options
for next year.
