If there's any consolation that came out of Saturday's loss to
William & Mary, it's that we played a pretty good team pretty
closely. The Tribe's depth just didn't let up, and we couldn’t
hold on to our early lead. Yet still it was a tie game with
eight minutes left and just a narrow deficit the rest of the
way. Yes, it's a reach, but it's the most positive thing I could
       come up with.
In the distance, it feels like there may be an oasis – both
Campbell and A&T at home. That's may be. But the four games in
front of that are all tough ones, beginning with Drexel, which
has made defense its hallmark in the last few years under
Spiker. This year, teams are shooting less than 40 percent from
the field against them, and a ghastly 27 percent from
three-point land. And at +7.2 for the season, they are all over
the glass, winning the rebound battle in every game but one this
       year.
Spiker had to do some offseason work to fill his roster like
everybody else, but they've also benefited from last year's role
players stepping into lead spots this year. MaGee has more than
doubled his scoring output (6.3 to 14.4) and Butler's pretty
close (6.1 to 13.9). Hargrove and Blakeney were nobodies last
year, and they've made a huge leap, particularly Hargrove as
he's filled in admirably for Amari Williams, now a starter at
Kentucky. They don't run things through Hargrove like they did
Williams, nor does he rebound/defend like him but ... he's not
far off either. As for the incoming talent, I really like Drake,
who's just a cool customer with the ball and has a nice looking
jumper. He'll also put it on the floor. Reminds me of Justin
Moore from last year a bit. Victor Panov has been a good juco
       addition for them too.
It's not this gifted, rhythmic offensive team, but the balance
is unmistakable. And they've got a bunch of 6-5 to 6-9 guys that
they can throw at you, including Villiam Garcia-Adsten, who
looks like he could be somebody someday.
Let's do a few more positives:
       • Woodard is 16 for his last 25 from the floor, shooting 3 for 7
from deep. He wasn't producing from three, where most of his
shots were coming from in the first month. He's stepped inside
       the line and been better.
       • Frey is 24 for 50 from inside the three-point line. I know
he's known for his deep threes, but I feel like he's been
setting into the mid-range and knocking shots down of late,
       including 5 for 7 in the W&M game. Frey's also a perfect 20 for
20 from the line. He attempted only 23 FTs all of last year.
       • Quin Gorman ... not bad? It's been limited action but it seems
       he can at least compete.
As for the negatives, there are many. We know this. And I don't
think anything is magically going to change – we kind of are who
we are. Drexel's got a number of bigs and wings, so I think
we're going to have our hands full inside again. It's not as if
they're huge by CAA standards; they're just bigger than us and
clearly showing effort on the boards. It's not impossible for us
to prevail, but we'll have to hit shots and it would be great to
generate extra possessions through turnovers or offensive
       rebounds.
A tangent: I took a peek at Polk State's stats from this year to
see what 2025 signee Kenny Fields was doing. 7, 2 and 2 in 17
minutes of action. These jucos tend to spread out minutes so
       maybe that's 12 a night with a regular workload. But I dunnoooo.
What do you think? #3 in black. He checks in around the 21:30
       mark.

Back to the Drexel game, it's difficult to identify a pathway to
winning games right now. Some people talk about identity; this
team plays with pace, this team buckles down on D and turns you
over, this other one challenges you inside or shoots it like
crazy or just outphysicals you. Or this team has a chance
because it has the best player on the floor some/most/all of the
time. I'm not really sure what that is for us. We have a lot of
guys who, frankly, I would prefer they didn't shoot it. Octave
       .220, O'Connor .208, Woodard .205, Philip .000, and I'll count
Snoddy in there too because that's not his game. And who's going
to take somebody off the dribble and score? Not many. And
Wight's trying down low, but we can't just feed him.
Defensively, teams are shooting almost 50 percent against us. So
how exactly are we going to do this?
       I really don't know.

Two-point swing in our favor. Line is just 4.5 now. Strange.

No buckets in the last 8 minutes. Knew it was deceptively close
when we were in the game.

Drexel locked down Luster in the second half – Frey too – and
the offense just stalled. We were stuck at 49 for forever and
Drexel kept plodding ahead. Over and over, Luster tried to draw
a foul but the refs (rightly) weren't having it. The book has to
be out on him and us. There are so few places to turn
offensively to begin with, and a credit to Drexel too. They were
impressive inside between Hargrove, Edomwonyin and Garcia
       Adsten.
Geno shortened the rotation, and had Gorman ahead of Nahar and
Philip, both of whom were DNPs.
I thought we competed defensively. MaGee and Butler were awesome
though, and teams are hunting O'Connor now.
