All right, everybody, a new year, we're 0-0 where it matters,
and have a chance to get off on the right foot here.
Not surprisingly, Monmouth's taken a step back without Xander
Rice, who's now averaging 19 a night in Greece, but this kid
Bashir has really come on as a sophomore. Last year, I remember
him being mostly a guy they stuck on the perimeter, but this
year, without Rice, the ball's in his hands more and he's going
to work off the bounce more. His shooting hasn't waned either.
Put it all together and he's had some gaudy nights – 38, thanks
in part to 10 threes, against Rutgers; 28 in a win over Seton
Hall; 27 in beating Fairfield. It's not an exaggeration to say
that we may not face a better scorer all year. For the league's
sake, I hope he stays all four years, but that's almost
impossible to fathom considering the attention he'll likely get.
The NIL landscape makes these coaches' lives incredibly
difficult. Jim Larranaga was the latest to cite the damper it
puts on programs when he stepped down last week. What's crazy is
that players don't even have to remotely dislike the school
they're at; they just have to be offered more money elsewhere.
You, me, anybody with a job, who can't relate? But it makes
everyone's job impossible, so I do feel for Geno and the staff.
I can't imagine it ever not being a revolving door with the
situation being what it is now. Can you say for sure who will
and won't be here next year? And imagine not knowing, trying to
plan for the future, with your livelihood on the line? Brutal.
The players have all the power.
That said, Geno’s seat should feel warm, if not hot. I think
most people can see through last year's run to the CAA title
game as being a great week that followed an ordinary year. This
year, of course, has been a struggle, and after being able to
point to a few games on the schedule that felt like a layup, now
it looks like we're the layup. This might not be a bad year; it
might be a BAD year. Right now, we're at or near the bottom of
CAA stats in literally everything except a couple miscellaneous
categories – we're #4! in free throw percentage! Perhaps most
damning of all is attendance, in which we sit 11th at a meager
1600+ fans a night. I realize that students have been away, but
I'm not sure how much that matters here. Taking a step back, if
Heilbron has to make a decision on Geno this year, is he really
going to sign up for more of this, or will he decide to pivot
and Geno's potentially bought out as a lame duck coach, for I
think about $365K? I really think we need Pitino Ultra Lite –
somebody with some degree of name recognition who can energize
       the community and program.
I do give King Rice (who’s suspended for this game after
criticizing officials) credit for keeping the band together – I
thought that Valencia might have been plucked as an athletic
high energy kid who could some off the bench for somebody at a
high D-I, if not start. But nope, he stayed. This is a good
nucleus of guys who, after facing the 56th toughest OOC
schedule, is due for better results in conference. I like their
bench too – Ball can play, you have 7-1/195 Dok Muordar pitching
in (3 blocks in 11 minutes against Auburn on Monday), Demings
was an All-WAC freshman at Utah Tech last year, and Justin Ray
looks like a guy who can knock down shots. He's been a blessing
with Collins having a horrific shooting year – .297/.238/.763.
With the bench, you're just looking for guys who can play a role
       – a short-term secondary or tertiary scorer, good on-the-ball
defense, a presence inside, ballhandling, energy, whatever. We
still looking for some of that. The 278-184 bench points margin
so far is staggering. Woodard and Philip aren't meeting
expectations, and Nahar and Nyarko are nearly invisible. If TO
returns from his surgery – maybe wishful thinking, I really
don't know – that would give our lineup a little more length,
       ballhandling and ability to create.
       Off-the-cuff post OOC report card:
       Wight B+
       Snoddy B
       O'Connor B-
       Luster C+
       Frey C+
       Octave C
       Philip D
       Woodard D
Is it too harsh to grade college kids? I dunno. I went with it.
For the positives, Wight has been just about everything we could
have hoped for, Snoddy's our Josh Hart, and while O'Connor
hasn't been this wunderkind but he's been admirable as just a
freshman in the starting PG role. I had Octave higher, but the
inefficiency offensively is tough to defend.
       Season assist totals:
       2024-25: Opponents 220, Stony Brook 152
       2023-24: Opponents 518, Stony Brook 424
       2022-23: Opponents 522, Stony Brook 499
       2021-22: Opponents 436, Stony Brook 347
       2020-21: Opponents 290, Stony Brook 276
       2019-20: Opponents 438, Stony Brook 368
Under Geno: Opponents 2424, Stony Brook 2066. Over 168 games,
this is only a difference of two or three assists per game, but
to have such a significant deficit in three seasons and likely a
fourth once we're done here, I think, reinforces what we've been
saying for a while about our offense being stagnant.
Of the road games on the schedule, this is among the more
winnable, which isn't to say I love our odds. But it would be
great to get off to a good start with three home games next. Can
       we get to 2-2?

Great analysis, Checkmate. I would think that this is one of
the few games we have a chance to win in CAA play this year. As
we're vertically challenged this year (among many deficiencies),
it is a wonder why Nahar and Nyarko aren't being given a
legitimate shot to contribute. Also, this is the first I heard
about Toby needing surgery, so given that, I'm assuming he's
       definitely done for the year.

I believe TO had surgery before the season. No idea how big of a
       procedure it was.

Perhaps a display of the general malaise around this program
       and/or college basketball ...
OOC replies/views on this board ...
       2015-16: 91/6624 (13 games) – AE title year
       2016-17: 183/8210 (13) – Boals arrives
       2017-18: 399/19302 (14)
       2018-19: 634/18844 (15) – Boals' last year
       2019-20: 315/16830 (15) – Geno arrives
       2020-21: Did not count
       2021-22: 360/12589 (13)
       2022-23: 319/9015 (13)
       2023-24: 343/8929 (13)
       2024-25: 163/4231 (13)
I added the earlier years after doing the most recent five. I
had thought we were higher than that during the Warney years,
but now I'm thinking we got a big bump from the success of the
2016 team and the excitement has slowly dissipated. I dunno. I
was curious so I did some digging.

I still view everything on the board but haven't felt the need
to add much to the conversation lately. Unfortunately, it seems
like we've been in the "hope things turn around come conference
play" mode for about a month now. I still think there's a world
where the JUCO/freshman guys get their D1 legs under them by
February and Octave/Wight have a little less burden on them as a
result. Think TSM 2 years ago vs last year when the team was
healthy and he wasn't the only option. Octaves FG% could go up
if the other shooters start getting comfortable consistently.
Maybe Charleston gets there but no top-100 team in the
conference this year so there's always a chance.

I think it’s largely a function of the state of mid/major
athletics, NIL, and the portal. Hard for a mid-major to recruit
and retain quality players given the current landscape. This
results in fan base malaise for the have-nots. To a smaller
extent, living in the world of Twitter/X, fans like the
immediacy of that platform versus a less dynamic forum
mechanism. Your posts are the main reason for keeping this
       medium alive.
