Re: Game 12: v Maine, 12/21 1pm

The ending was obviously horrible – if the game's 30 seconds
longer, good chance we lose. And we were lucky that Maine
couldn't get out on the break after that miss, or at least call
timeout. I see why they didn't though. What I don't understand
is why Maine didn't go to it sooner. Even a couple minutes
earlier would have made a difference.
I actually thought we played pretty well, maybe even really
well. We got pretty good looks and knocked them down, hit our
free throws, won the rebound battle handily, and had probably
our best defensive day of the season. Octave was great, O'Connor
had some big makes, and Wight/Snoddy held it down inside. I
thought the Maine guards were largely quiet until the final five
minutes, which was curious because once they ratcheted it up, we
hung in there for a bit but really crumbled once the deficit was
closed.
Burns killed them. They got inside our zone over and over and
either they refused to shoot the free throw jumper or just
missed it. I'd love to know what their mid-range numbers ended
up being.
It would have been a shame to cough that up, and I'm glad we
didn't. It does feel like we have one of these press break
meltdowns a year.

I also thought SBU played a solid, clean, even inspired game for
all but the last 1:30. Actually pretty impressed overall with
how the players seemed to stay within themselves and kept to
their best roles. Octave was really good (need to fly his
parents out here for all games), and not just with the numbers
he put up but with his leadership on the floor.
You really miss an Aaron Clarke to handle the ball and close
things out. Over the years it seems SBU teams have always had
much trouble with end-game pressure.
Again the end was a disaster, but other than that SBU solidly
beat a team that was probably better. Good to see.
