Did you ever think we'd be home dogs against Maine at any point?
And that we'd be facing the real possibility of going 0-2
against the conference we were too good for a few years ago?
We've won 22 straight against Maine. You'd have to go all the
way back to January 2011 for a Black Bear win, and January 2009
for a win in our arena. And that was Pritchard, so they've never
       won at IFCU/SBU Arena.
They're good though, sporting a nice win at Duquesne, at Brown
and on a neutral floor against Elon – albeit in what might have
been a letdown game for the Phoenix after they beat Notre Dame.
But that's a nice early season resume for a team that, three
years ago, went 6-23. It all began to change under Chris
Markwood, and as a former captain at Maine, married to a former
star on the women's team at Maine (and former Miss Maine and
Survivor contestant), you wonder if he's one of those rare ones
who builds the thing up and never leaves, a la John Becker.
And after a little Googling, all I have to say is good for him.
What he's done has been impressive though, and I like that he's
assembled a cavalry of northeast kids who have bought in. For a
while, Maine was like the UN. Five years ago, they had players
from 10 countries. And I don't mind international! But it did
feel like a real hodge podge, with comers and goers, guys with
real limitations, etc. And the transfer portal has to be even
more difficult when your team stinks, your conference stinks and
you're in Maine. But he's reversed the flow, especially in
assembling an awesome collection of guards.
Lopez barely saw the floor as a freshman at UNH, and he's turned
into a huge piece at Maine. He's a freak athlete, and although
his shot's a little weird, it obviously goes down. Burns too is
from New York and he fled LIU for a much better situation. Over
the last couple years, they've also nabbed Mantis (App State),
Gribben (Siena), Tutic (UNH), and Tynes is in his third season
in Orono after two years at Montana State.
The one to really watch in the backcourt is Tynes, who's twice
been named America East Defensive Player of the Year. He led the
country with 98 steals as a sophomore, and for a team that has
struggled with ballhandling and turnovers, he's going to be a
problem. As is Clayton, another Canadian. They get in your face
defensively and really jump into passing lanes, and that's a
theme no matter what five is on the floor.
Guys who end up at Maine can't be infallible though and they
aren't. Most notably, their marksmanship from deep isn't much.
Tynes, Burns and Clayton combine to shoot just 27 percent from
       three.
Behind the core guys you see above is some good size, with
Tutic, Keelan Steele and Killian Gribben all standing at 6-10.
If you're keeping score at home, after getting doubled up by
Marist inside, we're now trailing 388-258 in paint points on the
season. That's 13 points a night – skewed of course by the
Marquette thrashing but the Air Force game is the only time we
       won that battle.
I wonder if they're going to sic their guards on O'Connor and
the secondary ballhandlers we have. Lazy passes = buckets on the
other end. Maine's forced 13 or more turnovers in every game
this season but one, and you can bet they'll reach that plateau
again. OR they run a nice 1-2-2/3-2 zone that will emphasize
ball movement and cutting. Get it out of the corner! They'll
trap down there. On the other end, the guards can really put it
on the floor, so they'll make us guard too. If we put them at
the line, they're over 80 percent on the year from the stripe.
If there's anywhere that Maine can be had it's the glass.
Fordham was +12 in their romp. Penn, who's terrible, was +18.
Richmond was +10. So there we go – that's what we have to do!
Problem is we're light on the glass too, although we did handle
business against Rider thanks in large part to Snoddy. It has to
be a big Snoddy game. We need the extra possessions to counter
the likely negative turnover margin. I suspect Luster will have
his work cut out for him too, but maybe Octave can use his build
to beat up the smaller guards down low.
A very intriguing matchup. In the end, I think the experience,
quickness and tenacity of their backcourt will win out.

that Maine win streak has always been one of my favorite tidbits
dating back to when I was a student... for it to die after 13
years, after we left the America East, at home... I'm not
prepared for it. Maine was pretty much always a 300s KenPom
       team.
I should be posting more here but I'm just so uninspired. Of
course we'd blow a 14-point home lead against Marist. Silly me
to think we'd have any sustained positive momentum. I hated that
Frey heat check 3 when it happened and of course it bit us in
       the end.

That ridiculous 3 from Frey, which must have been from 40 feet
out, set the wheels in motion for a downward spiral. We were up
30-16 at that time, and wound up only up 6 at the break. Geno
needs to be irate in that situation and yank him off the court
for that stupidity. I know Frey was hot and feeling it up to
that point, but that was clearly the demarcation point of where
things spiraled. This team has oodles of deficiencies and
doesn't need to add stupidity to that list.

forget the distance- why even take a low % three pointer when up
       double the amount points?
what are we trying to achieve here, the NCAA committee will see
that we pounded marist by an extra point and give us a birth?

Nice half from the Seawolves. No reason not to go inside – Wight
adept, Snoddy and Octave wider than anybody Maine has. On the
other end, Maine has to have like one shot at the rim in the
halfcourt. Very peculiar. Gotta think that changes. I also
thought they looked tough when they got out and ran, but they’ve
       looked hopeless on the glass.

is Nick Woodard beginning to find his shot? We've needed that
bench scoring piece the whole year.

Should have been a double-digit win for the metrics, but no –
three backcourt turnovers after being up 11 with 1:40 to go. Not
a single clean inbound there. I don't know how you can do it
that poorly as a D1 team. That was Northern Iowa-Texas A&M esque
futility. I didn't have many complaints to go today until that.
UGH! At least we came away with the W, I guess, but the final
margin of victory deserved to be so much wider.

poor finish. nearly blew it- in fact, shouldve. and thats what
       happened last game.
only positive was woody today. well actually i liked our
       perimeter shooting too, for once.
4-8 is generous for this team right now.
