A little abbreviated this time as we go up against Marist (Don't
Call Me College) University! There aren't too many athletic
colleges anymore, are there? Lafayette I guess. Boston College
but they can't change their name to BU. Not too many.
Marist is trying to make some noise, and you have to give a nod
to Dunne, who kept almost every notable player from last year's
18-win team. Of particular note, Pascarelli, a good-looking
All-Rookie Team kid, stuck around and has made the jump from 11
to 19 a night. And you see the benefit of familiarity with this
team winning six of its first eight, five coming by seven points
or less, including a terrific win at Richmond last month.
They went in and found a nice one in Lewis, who starred at
Adelphi before making the move north. I like to see a kid excel
when given the opportunity to play at the highest level, at
least in terms of division, in the game. And he's only
scratching the surface – he's just 3 for 27 from deep, this
after shooting almost 42 percent from three with the Panthers.
I wonder how we'll fare against a team that has a little more
juice than Rider, whose offense was truly abominable – to be
fair, I thought it was a better defensive effort from us. But
they sorely lacked shooting. I felt bad for a few of them, who
were (rightfully) given no respect on the perimeter. But Marist
has an alpha and a good supporting cast.
Moving O'Connor to the bench against Rider was an interesting
move, and at least for a game, it worked. He still played 27
minutes, but we went the first 4 1/2 minutes without him, going
with the more experienced Frey and giving us two shooting
threats from the start. I'm wondering if we can go without
O'Connor's ballhandling and distribution for long spells when
conference season arrives. Can we piece it together with Frey,
Snoddy, Octave, etc? I dunno.
Worth noting: Snoddy was a +28 against Rider. Octave was next at
+16. Just an awesome effort from Snoddy. Also noteworthy: A
sixth straight appearance for Nahar. He seems to have passed
Nyarko, who's been a DNP the last three games. And it makes
sense. Nahar is long and can chip in offensively.
Geno did have it right in the postgame against Rider. Sometimes
basketball's simple – whether the ball goes in or not
corresponds with the end result. 13 threes was a season high and
matches our total from the previous three games combined.
Without a major post threat and, I would say, a guy who can
break down the defense, we're going to need to move the ball and
knock shots down. Luster is a gifted gifted shooter. When he has
an open look and he's able to step into it, you can forget it.
We haven't had too many 5 for 8s and 4 for 7s and 6 for 9s from
deep, and that's just the last few weeks for him. Gotta find
him.
I think we win. Marist has played a soft schedule and had some
narrow victories. We're in our gym, we'll be able to compete on
the glass, and I think we'll be able to muck it up enough to
keep this in the 60s and pull out a W.

A huge road win moved us +20 spots in KenPom and NET. We just
need a few more of those to get to a respectable number!
Any other year and I assume Marist is one of those games that
gets scheduled for us as a heavy favorite. We haven't played
them since 2013, really?

We did a home and home with them in 2012 and 2013 but nothing
before or since. We usually play a good number of NY schools –
Columbia, Marist, Albany this year; Wagner and Army the last
couple. I like the three this year and would love to sprinkle in
some Fordham at some point. To have played them only once in our
history is strange to me.
One other thing I meant to note: shoutout to Vermont for winning
a freaking national title in men's soccer. Vermont! They beat
#2, 3, 7 and 13 on their way to the top, with a D-II transfer
sealing it with a bonkers finish.

Sometimes you have to look at how badly shots are missed (see
Rider). Just now Octave and Snoddy put up back to back BRICKS
from three. Marist has to be happy to leave them open. There are
almost certainly better options for us offensively – Octave
being among them, just not from 24 feet.

More competitive, but lots of Bad TO’s and no rebounding. Missed
some key FT’s late too. Also, poor close to the half paved way
for Marist comeback.

Checkmate, you asked earlier this season who would take the last
shot, and it seems they haven't figured that one out yet.
Some stretches of good, but still just enough bad to not win the
game.

A few thoughts …
- On the last possession, I’d have preferred a shooter in the
corner, not Snoddy, to keep the defender honest and give Octave
a clear path, rather than him crashing and bringing the defender
with him. Of course it’s easy to say afterward; Snoddy just lost
the ball I just don’t see him being the guy to have the ball at
the end. Octave could gotten the hoop and/or the harm.
- A moment that I thought would haunt us: Frey grabs a defensive
rebound, dribbles up the floor and inexplicably jacks up a heat
check logo three up 30-16. A shock to no one, we make one shot
over the last seven minutes off the half and the lead dwindles
to six by intermission. The long three is fun for the crowd at
the time but 3-8 teams waste possessions with turnovers and
shots like that. Meanwhile, from there Marist goes layup, layup,
three, layup to cut it to seven and it’s a ballgame again. I was
really impressed with how workmanlike Marist was the whole
night. 36-18 advantage in the paint. The second chance disparity
felt bigger than 12-9.
- Assists: Marist 18, Stony Brook 7.
- Marist made Luster work for his 15. Only eight shots. Need
double digit attempts IMO, but it was still good to see him get
his inside the arc and at the line.
- I’m pleased to see Nahar chipping in, and I thought Woodard
played hard.
- I was surprised that Geno didn’t go offense-defense with
O’Connor and Philip at the end. OC had a nice night but I think
teams might hunt him in the waning moments.
- Quiet night the last few nights on the board. The Ls don’t
help of course. It just feels like there’s less buzz than usual,
which is saying something.

That last play did have me wondering. Just doesn't seem like
Snoddy is "the guy" at the end. From where I sat it appeared
Octave was only looking to dish instead of finishing it off
himself or draw that foul.
And not just the last play, but the ball slipped away from
Snoddy several times on the night.
Agree that Woodard looked solid in his minutes.
Wight, my gosh. The guy gets pounded every game. Him against a
bigger world down there.
Props to the team overall for playing hard, and I agree with
Ford that there have been improvements. Right now they still
seem to be a team that needs the opponent to really trip up to
get a win, rather than being capable of playing solid for an
entire game and earning a win.
Big picture and my two cents moving forward: Octave needs to
step up more visibly and vocally as the guy for this team. He
puts up solid games and numbers, but I don't get a sense he
asserts himself enough as a leader out there. Feels to me like
the team needs one guy with experience to drive the ship.

i missed the game but the posts above sound like i wrote them.
which means, let's share the ball. need more assists, better
clock control, higher % shots, stop being so greedy/impatient,
our one-dimensional play is so easy to defend, we dont have the
size/rebounding edge anymore, etc.
i argue we've had two good seasons in the modern era. both had
the same criteria- passing, high % shots, teamwork, patience,
rebounding, paint presence. like an ivy team.
