Mid non-conference State of the Union
By: sbupatriots Date: December 3, 2024, 6:59 am

Now that were about a month in with about a month left to go I
thought it would be good to do a roundtable state of the union.
Although were BAD I'm not sure were THIS bad. Let me lay out the
glass half full state of the union:
-We've played the 49th toughest schedule per Kenpom
-Our next 8 games are against teams ranked 200 or worse in
Kenpom, We've only played 1 such team so far.
-Last season we started 2-5 with our only D1 win coming against
#225 Rider against whom we only scored 55 points , lol
-Our 2 D1 transfers have actually been good, our Juco transfers
have been mostly bad but its their first month of D1, this 8
game stretch should give them a good chance to get settled
-Maybe Toby will come back at some point in this stretch for
much needed depth and defense at the PG position.
I'm staying patient.

Its a really bad start. losing to three Ivy league programs that
we should be able to beat on a good year and Norfolk State.
I have very little hopes for the this season after such a bad
start

Agree- still too early to panic. We started very slow last year
as well. Not sure why we continue to schedule these tough
opponents to start every year.

Mid non-conference? CAA play started TONIGHT with A&T at
Hampton. Had nooooo idea lol. Strange scheduling.
Good job taking a step back, Pats. And good call on TO, who I
forgot about a little bit.
One of the counters to this is that I can't see us being
anything but soft inside for the whole season. It's tough to
compete without any real size to protect the rim, get extra
possessions, etc. It's been a struggle overall, as evidenced by
the 348th best effective FG% and fourth worst effective FG%
defense. You can't do both of those things bad.
That all of our losses have been by double figures, we've lost
four times by 20 of more, including two against aforementioned
Ivy League teams, is concerning. The schedule does indeed soften
up though. Air Force has been wretched for a long long time so
it does feel like an opportunity for us.

Fair points on the tough schedule and early so far. I would echo
that we have a significant size/inside presence problem and I
don't see any answers on the bench.
Record is indeed similar to last year, and while the team last
year did take some early drubbings on the road to bigger
programs they were competitive against similar teams. And then
there was the terrible home loss to Wagner which was just a
give-away.
So far this year, other than that one win, the team doesn't seem
competitive against middling opponents. That to me is what feels
different.
But true this is a very new and inexperienced group. The
upcoming 5 games heading into CAA should be telling. Can this
team grow to be at least competitive in each one? Maybe getting
a win? Or 2 out of 5 as a high mark, perhaps?

there it is. we need an identity. what are we? what do we do
well?
if the answer is nothing- then let's start playing team bball,
passing the rock and maybe surprise some teams. btw that's
exactly what under-talented undersized teams do. it may just
work. we cant simply out-talent teams (or outsize) like we did
last year.
the other side of me thinks- this is the twitter/IG/portal/NIL
world. teams will change over annually and then, need time to
gel with all the new faces. so november is going to be tricky.
