Abbreviated version.
This is just a really good program. In four of the last five
seasons, they've won the MEAC regular season title, and in 2021
and 2022, they made the NCAA tournament. The MEAC is a bottom
five conference year after year, but Norfolk State's the class
of it. In the last five years, they've beaten programs like
UNCW, VCU, George Mason, Illinois State and James Madison twice.
We'd take that in the non-conference season, wouldn't we?
As good as NSU has been, we've had their number, winning the
last four, including two in the 2018-19 campaign. Of the five
games we've played all time, all since 2017, four have been
decided by single digits. I really hope that's the case again,
win or lose.
It's pretty amazing what they've found in Moore, a sometimes
starter at Murray State who has turned into their top option
offensively. It's not that unlike what Jamarii Thomas did for
the Spartans a year ago after a so-so stint with UNCW (he's now
averaging 12 ppg at South Carolina). Moore's primary objective
is to get to the rim and/or line. Don't be fooled by the
inflated three-point percentage – he's just 4 for 9 outside of a
6 for 6 effort from three against D-III Virginia Lynchburg.
That's not his game. Whose assignment is going to be making it
tough on him?
He's helped Norfolk to a couple notable results – the win over
James Madison (winners of 32 games a year ago) and what was just
a seven-point loss at Stanford. Again, we'd take that, right?
Jones has done a good job there, so much so that he was one of
those people that people mentioned when talking about a Geno
replacement. It wasn't THAT long ago that he was coaching at St.
Mary's, and before that Bard and New Paltz (his alma mater). At
Norfolk State, he's had just one losing season since 2013-14,
including a stellar 124-42 mark in conference play.
We're looking at a 1pm tip on Sunday. I have underestimated the
crowd on these kind of days – football, yardwork, shopping, are
people really going to show up? Students? I feel like it's been
better than expected and hope that's the case again. We are
going to be an EIGHT POINT DOG at home against Norfolk State.
You may think that this is the worst it's been, but less than
two years ago we got absolutely massacred by vaunted FIU and
Eastern Washington, and then lost to Yale and Bryant to drop our
KenPom to 344 going into the Sacred Heart game. So we've been
worse. But I still feel less competitive this year – not as bad
as the COVID year but it's way too close.
This is a game we would normally would expect to win, and we're
in no position to say that right now. I personally think the
Geno watch is back on, with the team performing poorly, NIL
lackluster and from a bird's eye view, dwindling interest in the
program on the court and in the stands. Just one opinion. Hope
Sunday yields a glimmer of hope.

Norfolk has a 150 KenPom??? I remember them being the team we
scheduled for easy non con wins! Except for that one time where
we lost at home days after beating Pikes on the road

Such an infamous loss. I can’t think of Norfolk State without
going back to that game – forgot it was after Petras’ heroics.
NSU was either winless or had only one victory.

ICYMI, more of the same. Norfolk State got what they wanted
inside, more than doubling us in paint points, thanks in part to
a +12 edge on the glass. Next to nothing from the juco guys on
either end – you at least thought they’d get us some buckets.
Woodard has two points in his last three games combined. I’m not
sure he played even 10 minutes today.
Long year incoming.

It will be interesting to see how long the AD sticks with Geno.
Nobody needs another Priore situation.

Just not very good and not very fun to watch.
Wight plays hard, but he's undersized and outnumbered.

Weren't these Juco guys supposed to be highly regarded? Luster
has had some great shooting games albeit inconsistently, but the
rest have done nothing!

If we could shoot, rebound, and were more athletic, we could
compete. Lost by 11, but seemed like 25, especially in 2nd half.

hard to watch- so obvious that we need two more Wights. but
then again we knew that before the season began.
instead we play small ball and can't shoot, can't rebound, can't
pass, can't control tempo, etc. And we rinse & repeat.

Kind of like the basketball version of Priore’s “three runs and
a punt” strategy.
