I'd never really thought of the advantage that Ivy League
schools have in the transfer portal. Are those on the league's
Europe-at-best roster going to give up an Ivy League degree for
more playing time at a lesser school, or less playing time at a
power conference school? Anything goes after the degree is
conferred, but I have to think that would be a tough decision to
come to beforehand. And who wouldn't want to transfer in?
Columbia's advantages here are in their continuity and in their
backcourt. Two years ago, when they were really bad (7-22, 2-12
Ivy), their three leading scorers were ... Rubio de la Rosa,
Brown and Bedri. Noland was a key guy off the bench. That's a
sophomore (GRDLR) and three freshmen. Last year, they double
their wins, and it's GRDLR, Brown and Thompson in the first
five, Bedri and Noland off the bench making significant
contributions. Here we are, with everybody all grown up, and
Columbia's connectedness is showing in the win column. When it's
all over, GRDLR is going to end up over 1,600 points for his
career, and the rest could easily end up with 1,000 each. In
this age of college basketball, that familiarity has to be
enormous, particularly in the non-conference season as most
other teams get to know each other. It's familiarity that we're
seriously lacking but hopefully develop as we approach
       conference play.
Who's our next 1,000 point scorer? Right now, Frey leads Snoddy
       258-202.
Back to the backcourt, what's nice is that all three of those
guards can handle the ball, make the pass, shoot it or take it
to the basket. You can't sag on any of them really (maybe
Brown), but if you're overzealous, they can go by you too (and
get to the line; see a 135-96 FTA advantage in six games). And
then you add the familiarity. I'd say it's Yale lite in terms of
movement, but I do like how they use screens to free up
shooters, which will put pressure on us to communicate and get
out and challenge shots. I do not think we did much of either
       against Yale.
Taking a quick glance at KenPom, it has our next win coming in
late – a one-point nailbiter at home against Campbell. A lot of
toss-ups along the way, and we'll obviously take some of them,
but even factoring in that twists and turns, the site has us at
       10-21, 5-13 CAA.
Another absurd thing I noticed on KenPom: If you click on an
individual player and look at each completed year, it gives
comparisons for their performance. For example, did you know
that Snoddy's season last year most closely resembles Trevante
Drye's 2015 year at Tulane, followed by Eldridge Moore (2014
Louisiana-Lafayette) and Gaellen Berwernick (2013 Northern
Arizona)? And the size and production are all really close! Such
a strange thing to have. Oregon State people are like "I tell
you, Gligorije Rakocevic reminds me of a young Jakub Petras."
       LOL.
The CAA's had a nice little year so far. On Wednesday, we went
4-1, including three road victories. Drexel and Hampton notched
two good away wins on Tuesday, UNCW hung around with #1 Kansas
for a bit, and going back to the weekend, there were some nice
50/50 kind of wins for the league. KenPom has us ranked at 15 –
the highest I've seen us since we entered the CAA – and hot on
the heels of the Sun Belt (14).
Initially, I kind of sneered at Columbia's unblemished record
and wondered if we could steal one. Yes, winning at Nova is
indisputably terrific for any mid-major. But even in their
one-point win against Lehigh they were up 15 in the second half
before a three-point barrage closed the gap. LIU looks close,
but they never trailed. They did have to storm back against a
pretty bad Loyola team in their opener. But the 6-0 start mostly
holds up. In this one, I just think it comes back to experience,
individually, collectively and at the Division I level.
Hopefully that's all it is for us – a matter of time.

19-point loss and it wasn't even that close. I missed all but
the last five minutes, but saw 17-6, 27-10, etc, on the phone
and wasn't too too disappointed with the choice. Geno's going to
say it's early and the guys need to gel – and it's early and the
guys need to gel – but realistically, I dunno, I just don't see
it. The schedule does get easier. We'll see.
Currently 14th out of 14 CAA teams in KenPom rankings, even
       trailing 0-8 Monmouth.

Yeah, right now, the same. Tuned in at the start and stayed for
less than 10 mins. Just wasn't fun to watch.

Two of the most mindless words a losing coach can utter are
“Credit to (insert name of opposing team).” It comes off as not
taking responsibility for your own coaching. The other team is
       just too good!

Great line here: "The Seawolves took, and mostly missed,
contested shots, while Columbia consistently capitalized on
       high-quality attempts."
The contested shots part is a very very common refrain in the
       Geno era.
The newness of the roster can be cited, but it doesn't seem to
be bothering a lot of other teams.
One thing worth noting: the list of freshmen under Geno include
O'Connor, Gorman, Space, Frey, TO, Muratori, Nahar, KRoberts,
and if you count the 2019-20 group, TSM and TPP. Let's count
them, and start off by saying that TSM is an all-time great
Seawolf. Beyond that and discounting this year's guys, Space,
Muratori, Roberts and TPP left without any real impact, Nahar
feels like a miss, and then you have Frey and TO who have been
       ... OK I guess?
It's not a great track record. To be fair, Speedy hasn't been
much better at Hofstra – Jaquan Carlos had three good years, a
couple others have been role players. But then you have
Northeastern, which has this great core of homegrown guys –
Woods, Troutman, King, Kermoury, Nwagha, a couple freshmen this
year – and you feel like they've got a chance to do some damage.
You saw the same thing with Columbia on Saturday – good recruits
who learn on the job, stick together and now they're 7-0. Man,
would it be great to have that. Instead, it's like we have parts
from every kind of car and you're trying to get the thing to
       run. Tough spot.
