Back in the saddle for what's a more realistic matchup for us.
Central was picked as the top directional Michigan in the MAC
preseason poll, coming in at eighth, just ahead of Eastern (9th)
and Western (10th). Not listed: D-III Northern Michigan, which
actually hung around a little with Michigan State in an
exhibition. While Ohio, under Boals, is the clear clear favorite
in the MAC with three preseason all-conference representatives,
CMU is trending upward. Their coach (and UMass legend) Tony
Barbee took them from seven wins in his first year to 10 and
then 18 last year. They have some horses this year too.
It's another tough draw for O'Connor as he'll likely draw
Pritchard, the preseason MAC Player of the Year who was named to
the MAC First Team last year as well as Co-Defensive POY. He was
an absolute nuisance for CMU against South Alabama, jumping into
passing lanes and turning them into easy buckets on the other
end. All over the passing lanes. USA, like us, had a lot of core
guys who were new to D-I basketball, and they paid for it. So
O'Connor and, really, everybody else will need to be aware of
       his whereabouts at all times.
Barbee said this team is "way more explosive offensively" than
any team he's had at CMU, the most notable wingman to Pritchard
being Heady, who was second team all-SWAC at Bethune Cookman
last year. Zooming through their opener, they just seemed to
have length everywhere on the court. Vasko's this rangy wing who
can handle the ball, VanderJagt a little broader but similarly
versatile. And they have three legit big guys in Jarusevicius,
Hunter Harding (7-0/245) and Bryan Ndjonga (6-9/200), all in
their rotation. They'll play two at a time, along with Vasko and
Heady at 6-6 each, which really dwarfs us. Marquette beat us
pretty good on the glass, and we'd be hard pressed to compete
       with CMU.
Really though, I just thought we were small against Marquette. I
know – they're a ranked Big East team; we are a middling CAA
squad still working out some kinks. But we're small, especially
if we're getting nothing from Nyarko and Nahar, and
understandably Gorman was relegated to garbage time on day one.
On our roster, Jared Frey is listed at 6-6. Did he really grow
two inches since last year? And put on 40 pounds since he was a
freshman? I am skeptical of that claim. Either way, we know he's
not here to wipe the glass. Nyarko seemed out of his element in
the opener, but perhaps he gives us something off the bench
after all. Against Marquette, it felt like Wight was encircled
by five guys his size and fending for himself.
Four points on their home court doesn't seem like much. I think
we're still feeling our way around a bit. We need Octave to be
more assertive; he took a lot of jumpers. Maybe Luster shows the
type of marksman he is; we saw a couple glimpses yesterday. And
without being swarmed, maybe Snoddy is more of a factor on both
ends of the floor. Maybe everything just looks better. Against a
Kansas or North Carolina or Arizona, or a less power conference
school, you can at least run your stuff, but it's teams like
Marquette and Houston that can make you look bad. And we looked
pretty bad, but it's like casting judgment on somebody's hair
after walking through a tornado. Let's see what comes out of
       this next one.

on size, you've all heard me sound off for years on this topic.
why play small ball when we lose rebounds and cant shoot anyway.
and the stats are in. we've had two pretty good seasons n the
modern era. one was with warney/mcgrew. the other was
fitz/maidoh, a FT away from an NCAA bid. the other
warney/mcgrew years were pretty good but also came up a hair
       short.
all the others- resounding disappointment. and no paint
       presence.
why do we fight the obvious?

What a win! Clearly stole one. Luster’s inexplicable error
fouling, actually gave us the oppty for the win. O’Connor was
sensational, and erased and doubts that I had about him after
       the Marquette game.

Sloppy but a win's a win. Great decision by Geno to switch to
zone. I screamed when Luster intentionally fouled in a tie game.
Collin O'Connor showed so much poise for a freshman PG. Can't
believe we went 14-for-26 at the FT line and still had the
       better percentage.

A big-time character win, wow. And to put the ball in the
freshman's hands and for him to deliver like he did, just
incredible. He made it 71-71 too with a nice breakdown of
Ndjonga also. That CMU team is going to win a bunch of games in
the MAC, and we went into their place and won after getting
       shellacked three nights earlier.
It blows my mind that Wight was a total non-factor at Toledo.
He's in the middle of every play, is a solid interior passer,
and he and O'Connor have a nice high screen-and-roll that we
went to a lot late. Did we do any of that with Clarke last year?
I don't recall us going to it much; very obvious this year. I'm
here for it. Get the defense thinking and let the point guard
make a decision with the ball. Heavy iso just isn't a consistent
enough solution. Back to Wight – SIX offensive boards tonight.
This usage feels about right. I do wonder if, when TO returns,
he can give the kid a breather at the point.
I think you entered this Marquette Challenge knowing we'd take a
licking in the opener, and then would absolutely love to split
the next two. We got our one win. Now let's see if we can follow
       it up.

Luster played his heart out and very obviously knew a split
second before that foul that he goofed, but exactly right Oldie
it actually set up SBU nicely to win.
I was so surprised by the poise SBU showed down the stretch,
especially considering the roster turnover, lots of young
players, and...a Geno Ford team this early in the season?
Frankly, was not expecting that at all.
And, wow, O'Connor. Don't we have to assume he'll get even
better as the season rolls along?
This was my first time seeing the team. I assumed size would be
a huge problem for SBU this season. Seeing them stay with, even
excel, against significantly larger players down low felt like a
       good sign.

7-18. A couple of forced 3's from Luster and Octave, but
nothing outlandish. The switch to Zone D is what turned the
game around in our favor, and CM couldn't find an answer for it.
And O'Connell took over towards the end of the game, with his
drives to the rim. FT shooting was real bad (but so was
there's), and it is evident that we lack height over where we
were last year, Hopefully, when Nahar is back in the fold, that
might add some help there. Doesn't seem like Geno has any early
       faith in Nyarko or Gorman.

That game winning layup by O'Connor was ABSOLUTELY FILTHY-
screen right, driving past two defenders, switching to the left
hand for an over the shoulder lay in. There's no way this kid is
       a FRESHMAN- I don't think we've ever had a player this mature
and this SOLID at his age since Warney.

Don't forget, he played Prep ball for a year, and they were
National Champs. He played with a couple of the guys on
Marquette. So he's probably 19 or 20. Nevertheless, I totally
agree, plays much bigger than a freshman, and looks like SBU got
a steal picking him up (for at least this year!).
