       Hello fellow Seawolves fans,
I'm a lifelong Stony Brook resident and a lifelong Seawolves
fan. I just discovered this community, so this is my first post.
       Thanks for having me.
I was at the Harvard scrimmage on Saturday and thought I'd share
some notes for those who didn't brave the cold (19-degree feel
       temp. at game time).
SBU held a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter and outscored
the Crimson 3-0 in the second. The score reset after each
period, but that gave us a 6-2 advantage on aggregate at the
half. The bright spots in the first half were some very solid
play at the faceoff X, some excellent netminding from #22
Jamison MacLachlan (including several stops on the doorstep),
and the man-up unit that scored on its first two chances. The
Seawolves were aggressive on GBs, the ball moved crisply on
offense (which wasn't the case at times last year), and the boys
played with a lot of energy.
In the third quarter, Harvard took the frame, 3-1 (leaving us
ahead 7-5 on aggregate). Penalties played a role as the Crimson
connected on a pair of man-up goals. The Crimson continued to
heat up in the fourth, outscoring us 7-3 to take the scrimmage
12-10 on aggregate. Penalties continued to show up in the
fourth, and Harvard took advantage with at least one man-up
goal. Obviously, it was just a scrimmage, so winning was not the
ultimate goal. Coach Gilardi subbed liberally, including giving
four goalies substantial time in net, which was great. Had we
been playing to win, Harvard (#18 in the preseason poll) would
       have had their hands full.
All in all, there was a lot to be excited about from my vantage
point. With ranked match-ups coming up @ #20 Rutgers and #16 UNC
in our first two games, we have a chance to make some noise. Lax
       is back, boys!

Stony Brook men’s lacrosse hopes to turn the page on poor 2024
       season

However, what could go wrong did go wrong last year, resulting
in the Seawolves sporting a 4-10 overall record — their worst
mark since 1996 — and a 2-5 conference record, which resulted in
       them missing the playoffs.
“[The coaching staff] took a day and we just evaluated every
aspect of the program,” head coach Anthony Gilardi said in an
interview with The Statesman. “We had a meeting at the end of
the year and we set the tone. This is what I did wrong as a head
coach. This is what we’re looking to do. And it wasn’t blaming
anyone, it was, ‘these are the things we have to do to be
       successful.’”
To make matters worse for Stony Brook, the end of 2024 also put
a bow on the collegiate careers of several core players:
attackmen Dylan Pallonetti, Blake Behlen and Will Button
alongside long stick midfielder Christian Lowd, defensive
midfielder Ben Morschauser and defensemen Michael Sabella and
Sean Conk all exhausted their eligibility.
Additionally, attackman Nick Dupuis and midfielder Noah Armitage
       — who started every contest for the Seawolves last campaign —
packed their bags and hit the transfer portal, ending up at
       North Carolina and Maryland, respectively.
Although the aforementioned departures will be costly, Gilardi
and his staff will have a significant amount to work with. Stony
Brook added 10 transfers and have eight three-star recruits from
the 2023 class entering their sophomore year.
Regarding the returners, though, attackman Justin Bonacci, FOGO
Chris Esposito and defenseman Carson Forney are the only impact
       players that are back.
Defensively, Forney will be aided by defenseman Ryan Dodge and
defensive midfielder Will Birney this year, a pair of players
slated to make a significant leap in their sophomore years.
“[O’Brien] has come in from day one and he probably exceeded
every expectation we had,” Gilardi said. “At the first week of
practice, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, we really hit it here.’”

Stony Brook men’s lacrosse’s goaltender battle still a major
       talking point

Going into 2025, the goaltender duo of Jamison MacLachlan and
Tommy Wilk will need to take a step forward if the Seawolves
have any plans of returning to the Coastal Athletic Association
       (CAA) playoffs.
With both names enjoying success at some point in their
respective Stony Brook careers, Gilardi sees both as viable
       options entering 2025.
Two outside candidates for the position are goaltenders Joey
Rice and Matt Roughgarden. Rice appeared in just one game his
freshman season, though his coach tabbed him as the “most
improved player from where he was in the fall.” As for
Roughgarden, the first-year New Jersey native was an
       All-American in high school.

Feel bad for my boys, team last year was so dejected and it was
all about the leadership at the top. Picked to win CAA and we
win 2 games and don’t make post season first time in D1 history.
So many returning studs. Doesn’t take much to connect the dots
with the mass exodus. We needed to bring in 25 new boys, 10 from
transfers. Three years ago, we lost an entire class to being
expelled. Teams led properly don’t need to be rebuilt like that
every other year. Coach is a great salesman, but last year we
all stop buying what he was selling. Too much negativity and
that led to low morale the entire year and ultimately it showed
how we played. Everyone is blaming injuries, we all know that is
not true. Hopefully, for the sake of my boys, coach reflects on
his style and leadership. Otherwise we will always be in a cycle
       of losing players and rebuilding.

       D-I Men's Lacrosse Notes: Stony Brook's Early Returns, Iona's

Anthony Gilardi admits there were moments in January when he
asked himself just what he was thinking when he put together
       Stony Brook’s lacrosse schedule.
A trip to Rutgers right away. A visit to North Carolina six days
later. A quick turnaround two days after against a rested Queens
team. And all with the Seawolves being young and new while
coming off an injury-plagued 4-10 season.
“I think there’s two ways to go about it,” Gilardi said. “You
can line up a lot of 50/50 games or games you may have more
talent. I think for us, we went the other way and said, ‘We need
to see where we’re at early in the season,’ because we have to
build into CAA play. We know our way to the NCAA tournament is
to win the CAA conference tournament.”
Gilardi must feel a little bit better after Saturday’s 9-8
victory at Rutgers, armed with the knowledge Stony Brook
shrugged off allowing the first four goals and scrapped its way
back for its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2021.
Some of it is probably relief. And some of it is a sense the
Seawolves could tap into their potential as a largely untested
group delves deeper into the season.
“It was just, ‘How do we respond against a Big Ten team on the
road?’ It’s our first time traveling; we had three home
scrimmages this year,’” Gilardi said. “All those unknowns were
keeping me up at night for sure. Then offensively and
defensively, we’ve rolled so many guys for four and five years
that all graduated. It was, ‘OK, who is going to step up?’ and I
think that was the exciting part.”
Stony Brook started two freshmen and two sophomores on offense
but received significant help from two transfers who immediately
earned starting roles. Carson Boyle had three goals in his first
game since arriving from Vermont, while lefty attackman Ray
O’Brien, who had 214 points in four seasons at Division III
Hampden-Sydney and earned a nod as a captain last fall, scored
       twice.
There was also a bounceback outing for senior goalie Jamison
MacLachlan, who made the CAA all-tournament team in 2023 but
struggled last year and played sparingly in the second half of
the season. He made 13 saves and allowed four goals in the final
       55 minutes.
None of it means the Seawolves have everything figured out.
Their top four scorers departed, and the 23 players who logged
time against Rutgers combined for 34 starts with Stony Brook
last season (with defenseman Carson Forney’s 13 and attackman
Justin Bonacci’s nine accounting for more than half of them).
Still, the early payoff was a welcome hint that a process
predicated on effort, accountability and toughness is working.
“This team is going to have ups and downs,” Gilardi said. “When
you play five freshmen on offense, there’s going to be waves of
really good play and head-scratching moments. As long as we
continue to stick to the plan and continue to progress, rep by
rep, game by game, then we’re playing some better lacrosse by
the end of the season and that’s the focus.”

The youth and potential were on full display last Saturday in
Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels used their feasting 10-man ride to
give their offense extra possessions and numbers to put away the
Wolverines 15-6. Owen Duffy and Dom Pietramala are young and
talented and are responsible for bringing the juice to the ride
and the offense for the Tar Heels. Michael Gianforcaro also had
a strong game in the net. The Heels will welcome the Seawolves,
who are fresh off an “upset” win over Rutgers on The Island last
weekend. It would be wise for the youth not to read too many
press clippings and stay hungry. [/quote]
