Being defended by Niskayuna lacrosse standout Connor Reynolds?
Good luck.
Reynolds, a four-year varsity player, is headed to play at Stony
Brook

>
> NISKAYUNA — Connor Reynolds is cerebral, yet fierce;
calculated. yet savage. Seeing the Niskayuna senior defender go
about his work on the field is a sight to behold, except for the
unfortunate offensive player who has to deal with the Stony
Brook-bound standout over the course of 48 minutes.
>
> “His development has been amazing. His best attribute is his
motor,” Niskayuna coach Mike Vorgang said. “He has the ability
to cover someone behind the goal and above the goal. That is
great versatility for us. This year, we have used him covering
the opponent’s best guy. He is great on the ball and his
improvement off the ball has been amazing too. Off the ground,
he has been great. He is one of better defenseman we’ve had in
this program for a long time.”
>
> “Niskayuna lacrosse is a family. To be considered among those
(all-time) guys means the world to me,” Reynolds said. “I grew
up watching these guys and I dreamed of being where they are.
Now that I am living it, it is surreal. I am really blessed to
play this sport and be on this team.”
>
> Niskayuna (17-3) returns to action Thursday in a Class B state
semifinal contest against top-ranked Victor (20-2) at SUNY
Cortland. The Blue Devils, a perennial power from Section 5,
have won 12 straight contests. The Victory program captured four
state titles between 2015 and 2019.
>
> Reynolds has been part of four sectional title teams,
including this year’s Class B championship that was secured with
a 13-0 victory over Ballston Spa. Niskayuna then prevailed 14-13
in state quarterfinal play against Section 3 champion
Fayetteville-Manlius. Niskayuna enters Thursday’s contest riding
a nine-game winning streak. The team’s first setback this season
came against Victor, a 9-6 loss back on April 25.
>
> “Ever since we got that victory against F-M, I have been
licking my chops for another chance at Victor,” said Reynolds,
who scored a game-tying goal late in that state quarterfinal
win. “We lost to them the first time. It was super
heartbreaking. We’ve got a second shot against them. This team
is playing well on both sides of the ball. We’re excited to play
them again.”
>
> “For him, this is it. We either earn another day together on
Thursday or we don’t,” Vorgang said. “I am sure he wants another
day together with his teammates.”
>
> Reynolds takes on huge tasks every time he takes the field. He
often draws the other team’s most talented offensive star — and
relishes the assignment.
>
> “Connor is relentless. The best part of him is he really wants
to be good,” Vorgang said. “He is very critical of himself, but
he also really cares. … His ability to grasp information, his
tenacity, his relentlessness and his will to be really good is
huge for this program.”
>
> “I remember in sixth grade at a youth practice, I worked with
a long stick for the first time. It was awkward. I learned to
like it,” Reynolds said. “It is really a different position on
the field and it comes with a lot of responsibilities. It is a
position that has changed my life. It is my life. I love this
game.”
>
> Not only is Reynolds a potent and reliable defender, he can
get involved in transition offense. During a 15-5 victory over
Christian Brothers Academy April 16, Reynolds established a new
school for defenders by scoring three goals.
>
> “He never panics when he runs up the field,” Vorgang said.
“Connor is a just great player for us.”
>
> As much as he enjoys scoring on occasion, Reynolds' main focus
is preventing goals, and he takes great pride in that.
>
> “It is unreal feeling to take someone out of the game,”
Reynolds said. “There is nothing but happiness when you lock
someone down and play your game.”
>
> Reynolds says he enjoys being pushed hard by the Niskayuna
coaching staff. When choosing a college program to play for, the
senior, who plans to major in mechanical engineering, wanted a
coach always asking for his best. He believes he found that in
Stony Brook coach Anthony Gilardi.
>
> “Coach Gilardi reminds me a lot of coach Vorgang,” Reynolds
said.
>
> The last time Niskayuna played in a state final was back in
2015, when it beat West Genesee 13-10 to win the Class A title
>
> Reynolds wants that drought to end with a win on Thursday.
>
> “When you are a little kid and go to these games, you think
about what you want to do in the future: a state championship,
going to one and winning one is on that list for sure. It is a
bucket list thing for me,” Reynolds said. “I think with this
group of guys, we can pull through.”

continue his playing career at Stony Brook. The rest of the
Suburban Council will be happy to see the senior defender
depart, as the two-time US Lacrosse All-American proved a
confounding presence for opposing attackers. In arguably
Niskayuna’s top performance of the season, Reynolds helped lead
a shutout in the Section 2 Class B final, as the Niskayuna
program posted its 22nd championship with a 13-0 victory over
Ballston Spa.

helped Niskayuna capture the Section 2 Class B title. Named as a
US Lacrosse All-American for the second time, Reynolds' ability
to neutralize the opposition’s top scoring threat made things
easier on the rest of the defense. He finished with eight goals
and one assist, plus added 57 ground balls and 24 caused
turnovers.
