Caporuscio leads Stony Brook to NCAA tournament

[quote]
From Mountain Top to Long island Isabella Caporuscio continues
to be one of the best women’s lacrosse players in the country.
The former star at Crestwood, now a Stony Brook Sophomore, has
leaped onto the CAA scene garnering conference midfielder of the
year and has been named an inside lacrosse midseason all
American.
Isabella Caporuscio, Stony Brook sophomore,(Crestwood) says, “
I've just been trying to work as hard as I can to do the little
things and, you know, just feed off of my teammates, and it's a
great group around me. So, you know, it's not success for one
person I think that, you know, when we're all together, we feed
off of each other and, help each other out. “
This season, Cap opened up her new starting role with Stony
Brook, scoring six goals against Bryant and she's led the
Seawolves ever since. She has scored 46 goals with 19 assists,
and has helped a very young Stony Brook team to have even more
success.
Caporuscio says, “Something I always keep in mind is there's
always room to grow. You know, so you could have, a hattrick one
game, but, you know, you, you always trying to aim higher, for,
for the next game. And, our coaching staff is awesome. They,
it's easy to have confidence in yourself when you know others
believe in you.
So, they're awesome when it comes to just giving you what you
need to hear and, and at the same time, telling you what you
need to work on.
Bob Ide asks, Describe yourself as a player right now. If you
could describe yourself ?
Caporuscio, says” I think for me, I, I try and do the little
things right. You know, the things that. Yeah, having goals or
nice assists or nice, the things that show up on the stat sheet
are nice. But at the end of the day, those aren't the things
that are always going to win the games. You know, you want to do
the little things, whether it's, gritty plays between the 30s or
just beating a player to a ground ball. Those are the things
that, you know, see you on a stat sheet that, I really focus on
because hustle plays, are going to be talent. “
On Friday, Stony Brook will make their 12th straight appearance
in the NCAA tournament after winning another CAA title last
season. They lost in the second round of the tournament. And
this year, Caporuscio and crew feel they can do even better..
Caporuscio says, “I think it's a mix of everything, you know,
some nerves, a lot of excitement, though. At the end of the day,
though, we've prepared as best we could. And, you know, when,
when you do whatever you can to prepare you, you're confident
and you go in knowing that, you know, it's you versus the other
team.
So there's not much more you could do. So I'm excited. I think
there's going to be some success that we see as a whole. So
it'll be interesting to see what happens. “

What a performance. That was YUGE!!!
If you recall, the first time these teams met in the tourney’s
second round two years ago, SB lost by one goal and there was a
very controversial late call where a Loyola player on D
absolutely flopped by design to draw a card/turnover as SB was
screening and cutting from the top on offense. It was a pivotal
call late in a tie game. Later, it was played on repeat on
twitter to magnify that the player literally wasn’t touched when
she flopped and Spallina even commented. It looked like a
decision made from Loyola sideline to have the player pull that
stunt in that moment.
*Stony Brook had a “reputation” that season of being an overly
physical team because a Yale player suffered a freak internal
injury against us earlier in the year. The players mother (a
Disney executive) took to social media to bash our program and
we were unjustly on every officials radar the rest of the
season. The official certainly took the bait on that play. It
was a terrible look and worse officiating.
Nevertheless, it makes winning this rematch even sweeter in my
opinion. I know Coach Spallina remembers that play.

Here is a link to the twitter video. It was called on our 1st
team all-American Ellie Masera. Goal was actually taken away on
this play. So bad.

No. 18/20 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse downs No. 16/17 Loyola
Maryland, advances to play reigning national champions

[quote]With the triumph, the Seawolves have still never been
bounced in the first round of the national tournament, advancing
to a 12th straight second round game.
“It’s do-or-die at this point in the season,” Maclay said. “My
whole [are] these girls and this team. We want another day, and
that’s all you could think about. Whatever is going to get the
ball in the back of the net, whatever is going to get us another
day together. I’m going to put my life on the line for them, and
tomorrow and the next day.”
“Our assistants have been lights out,” Spallina said. “Clare
[Levy] was in that defense for so long, she understands it in
and out. They obviously have some established scorers, some
great players, so we had to know where they were at all times.
You [have] to beat us with seven players. It’s not going to take
just one player the way our defense is designed.”
Stony Brook has a monumental challenge ahead. For its second
round contest, it will take on Boston College — the 2024 NCAA
Tournament champions — in hostile territory. The Eagles rank
first in the nation in scoring offense and second in scoring
defense. Their only two losses on the year have come to the
University of North Carolina, the tournament’s top seed.
“We have an opportunity in front of us,” Spallina said. “What
they have is what we want. They’re going to get the best we have
to offer.”
Boston College has reached the national tournament title game
seven consecutive times. The last time the Eagles failed to do
so was in 2016, when the Seawolves eliminated them in the first
round. However, they returned the favor in 2018, beating Stony
Brook in the Elite Eight. Opening draw for these sides’ latest
NCAA Tournament clash is set for Sunday at noon.
